How to motivate readers (for fun and profit)

Tip #1: Employing time-tested methods of persuasion (example below) gives the reader reason to +1 your posts and practically guarantees success!

Its not. But its not completely useless like the guy said before. I mean, if for some reason you want lots of +s on one of your posts, you +ing it yourself would help more people to + it.

Ah. :D

Perhaps kids that want to be popular, or have their thoughts validated in some way?

I gave up that pipe-dream some time ago. :p

When your posts are wrongfully -1'd, just leave it alone and someone else will generally fix it. At least, that's what I've seen happen to me.

Anyways, I generally don't use the system unless someone's post was wrongfully -x'd for no reason or if someone makes a brilliant comment (generally on the first page stories).

I immediately place a down vote on my posts so I can beat someone to the punch.

I do it when I get downvoted but the person hasn't posted any response to my post. If you disagree with something then at least man up and tell me why. The voting system is honestly the worst addition ever made to this forum. I think a "Thanks" button would be a lot better, it would help to remove the negativity.

(Oh and I sometimes up and down vote posts accordingly to get them to zero, because some men just want to watch the world burn )

A lot of other forums have the + button, but not the - button.

I don't care enough to bother, so no. I do +/- other people's posts occasionally, especially when it's been unfairly negatived.

I think the +/-1 system is really passive-aggressive and adds very little to the site. I suppose it fits though, this place is miles wide and an inch deep these days.

Few times I "corrected" the voting on my posts; but normally I don't care too much. But I also vote on others in both directions.
Would be nice to see a list of voters ...

The voting system should require some mathematical equation upon hitting an up/down vote. That way people who are trolling can at least be forced to put that brain to work for their effort.

Not to say that I troll with the +/-, but then I wouldn't even bother using the system at all.
