does the battery really only last 120 minutes whilst tethering?

that value seems a little low

That seems really low. I don't want to drop my unlimited AT&T plan before I know how good the battery will last while the hotspot is activated.

Been tethering for 40 minutes with Personal Hotspot now with screen off, and battery is at 80%

I'll probably just keep my Clear iSpot, it is only $25 a month for 4G. Even though AT&T would be cheaper with a tethering plan I don't want to drop unlimited.

That seems to be draining pretty quickly.

Don't drop your unlimited plan... just JB. You'll thank me later.

No.

If you are concerned about the battery just put your phone in a Mophie-style battery sled.

Honestly I've never really liked those. On my iPhone I like it as sleek as it can be. I just have the Zagg invisible shield on it.

I don't want to lose the unlimited data plan on my 3GS and I don't want to jailbreak. I looked into mifi devices. After doing some research I think down the road i'm gonna get Virgin Mobiles mifi device. No contract and I can pay $50 for unlimited data. However I did read some stores mention $40 5gb cap. Its one more device to carry but on the road or when i'm somewhere without WIFI it'll be nice to just connect to the internet to surf and check e-mails. I'll be able to connect both my iPhone and iPad.

I had a 3G iPad before but now I am getting a WiFi model. I will use the personal hotspot feature of my iPhone in order to go with my iPad 2 online. I don't really mind not having GPS and I think that 4-5 hours battery life for the iPhone when using the personal hotspot feature, is more than ok.

I want GPS in the WiFi, that would be great. It sounds like the hotspot thing will only give you about three hours of battery, according to an above post.

What is the best way to JB iPhone? What are the limitations as far as apple apps and how do you update the iOS/phone if it is JB?

Thanks

I consider them to be pretty invaluable since I use my iPhone a lot on the go. I like being able to use it as much as I want without worrying about how much battery I have left. It also preserves my internal battery because it drains the Mophie first.

Well...

I, for one, will be tethering, via my jailbroken IP4 using MyWi. Works great with my laptop and will work great with my iP2 when it arrives.

I hate to JB my IP4, I bought all my apps through app store. But, it is getting stupid to pay another $25 on top of my $110 plan (unlimited voice and data). My 3G data usage is well below their cap too.

I'm going to be tethering to my ipad2 with my IP4, while keeping my unlimited data (ppl have explained how already)

Handylight + ezShare (HTTP) socks.pac file

Those lucky few with Handylight - share a socks.pac file containing below through HTTP with an app like ezShare [adjust the IP accordingly]:

function FindProxyForURL(url,host) { return "SOCKS 169.0.0.1:1337"; }

Configure iPad proxy URL and viola, tethering. Though still no assisted GPS, and you have to create a WiFi network...

Have tested via Ad Hoc & on a WiFi network using alternate IPs (using the WiFi, like Bongo, to establish the WiFi network when without a laptop or what have you.)

Get padnet for free on jaikbroken iphone 4 and you dont have to jb your ipad or pay monthly fees.

I have Tmobile and they seem to be the most lax about their tethering policy. Only until recently did they allow tethering completely. Anyway their "rule" is less than 5gb in a bill cycle and you are good. otherwise they throttle your 4g speeds and lift the throttle the next bill cycle. Seeing as how i NEVER even see more than a few hundred MBs using my phone, and i'm on my phone all the time, it won't be a problem. I wont use my phone to browse and GPS and all that nonsense anymore if I have my ipad around.

Also 1 touch wireless hotspot on my mytouch 4g allows instant internet. It is awesome!
