I will be tethering from my rooted samsung vibrant running custom OS. I will be just fine. I did with my iPad1 with minimal battery loss and will do it again with the iPad2.

Why waste money on a crappy crippled 2gig ATT/Verizon plan.

I've been tethering my iPad 1 on my iPhone 4s unlimited data plan all along but I'm getting the 3G iPad 2 for a couple reasons. I'm getting tired of having to plug my phone in so it doesn't die well tethering my iPad. Plus I want gps. So I'll get the 3G iPad but I probably won't pay for data all the time. 2 weeks after the iPad 2 comes out so I'm driving to fl so I'll def buy data for the first month.

Kinda tempted to get a VERIZON iPad just for the trip cause I know AT&T service is terrible in the carolinas and Georgia but after that when I'm here in Boston AT&T will be way faster so it would be a waste to buy the VERIZON iPad for just one trip.

I was very tempted for a wifi only iPad, but then when I saw the assisted GPS is not there...I changed my mind pretty quickly.

I'm with you on that, purchase the 3G iPad, but not pay for data all the time. AT&T service has gotten better here in Eastern North Carolina...so I'm still deciding which carrier I want. I haven't had any complaints with my iPhone 4 since 3G finally made it to Goldsboro...

ATT SUCKS in Florida. Go Verizon!

I was going to get the Verizon iPad, but at $829, plus the accessories I need, plus the fact that I have personal hotspot on my iPhone 4 - I changed my mind today and will be getting the WiFi only iPad. Overall, with taxes and stuff, I'll be saving $139.04 on the iPad and there is no need for me to throw away money on a data plan for the iPad when I have 2GB/month for $20 on my Verizon iPhone.

I tethered with my iPad and my Sprint phone. Won't be doing that again. It's way too annoying to drain your battery that fast on your phone. I'd rather kill my iPad battery and not be able to use it than to kill both and be without my phone. But different people feel differently.

OK, thanks for that. I was going to use my EVO's hotspot capability but was really worried that I would be searching for an electrical outlet after an hour or so and I have to do that now sometimes when traveling just with regular phone use. Based on what I am reading on another thread, VZW is going to charge a $35 activation fee if you turn data on/off (no monthly contract), so I am going ATT.

I will be tethering it to my Verizon android phone. Its rooted, so i have unlimited data and dont have to pay a dime more to tether.

If I jailbreak my phone, can I still download Apps from the normal App Store? Also, will tetherme work with the AT&T iPhone 4. Any idea when the jailbreak/unlock for the 3.10.01 baseband will be released? I heard a lot of stories about it being released in January, February, and so on so I'm not sure whether it will be released at all. Thanks!

Wifi iPad, iPhone 4 with mywi and unlimited data.

Yes, I'll miss the GPS functionality on the iPad, but that's what I have an iPhone for. The way I see it, the devices compliment each other; I'm not getting an iPad to replace the iPhone, so why bother trying to replace it's functionality.

32GB Wifi, please!

I've rooted my Droid Incredible and have made it a Wi-Fi hotspot. If I need to access the internet from the iPad while I'm out I'll just enable the Wi-Fi and use that. Can't imagine I'll need it often, but I'm not willing to pay $20 a month for something I'll use maybe an hour or two a month.
