I am perfectly content with my 1st Generation iPad, as I barely use it to begin with unless I'm traveling.

The biggest factor that will ever get me to buy another iPad is if Apple finally intergrates a USB and HDMI slot.

I don't know if you have followed Apple a bit lately, but there is just no way that Apple will integrate USB. There is no reason for them to change away from the universal connector. In addition Apple will most likely focus on Lightpeak / Thunderbolt for data transfer, and will most likely supply or start selling a universal connector for that interface soon.

Apple has much more control over peripherals with the universal connector, and Apple earns a lot of money by selling licenses for universal connector peripherals.

About HDMI: same story..

Mine is a launch day iPad. I really like the look of the iPad 2 (thinness and upgraded RAM and processor) but I cannot justify upgrading. Maybe in another year and iPad 3 comes out.

I use mine daily for personal uses and work. Boxwave stylus + Penultimate are two things that make for one great use case. I also use Pages quite frequently.

If it works, why switch?

I'm out of my office quite a bit, so mine is primarily a work tool that I also happen to play music on in my car.

It works quite well enough for my uses so far, especially if 4.3 gives Safari a bit of a speed boost.

God knows my wife would like one, but I can't justify getting a new one for that price when my old one works perfectly well. So until my old one quits working or can't do something that I need it to do, it's staying. It's one thing to upgrade a smart phone every 12-18 months since you're already paying for the subsidy, another to spend almost macbook money on the endless apple update cycle every year.

I'm thinking of the ipad 2 as the ipad 'pro', and I don't really need a pro machine just yet.

Like others on this thread, I'm predicting that by the time the ipad3 is released we'll start seeing apps that won't run on version 1.

I'm keeping my iPad. There's nothing in the new model that I particularly need, so I'd rather wait for v3.

I do need to remember to get AppleCare for my iPad soon.

Applecare for the iPad looks like poor value. It only extends the warranty by a year - not the two years you usually get with computer products.

Keeping mine, not much of an upgrade for iPad 2 (for what I use mine for) to warrant an upgrade.

Plus the iPad original design is way nicer then iPad 2's design.

The upgraded specs of the iPad 2 are very nice, but to be honest. I don't think as an owner of an iPad 1 enough justification to sell mine and get the 2.

I don't care about face time or the cameras, so that leaves the cpu/gpu upgrade and to be honest. That doesn't really tempt me too much. I'm happy with the user experience with the iPad 1.

The bottom line, is that I'm content with the iPad 1 and why change something that is working so well.

I was an early adopter. Ordered my iPad 32GB and received it April 3rd. I really considered selling it to better justify my buying of the iPad 2 but I just couldn't. It's the ORIGINAL. Its the tablet to rule them all and define them all. I just feel like later on down the road I'll really be glad I still have one of those products that revolutionized a market. It's already a classic and will be forever so I'm hanging on to it as well as ordering an iPad 2. But after that I'll be set. I can't imagine anything that the iPad 3 could have that'd make me want it over the iPad 2:apple:
That's exactly how I'm going about it, save for the last sentence.
I know I'll be buying the next one too, especially if it has a Retina Display.
I sold my original iPhone, to pay for the 3G and have regretted it ever since, because it was the original game-changer.

Since the IOS4.3 upgrade nearly brings original iPad to near same performance and I own iPhone 4 (there's my camera/face time), I'll wait for the iPad 3.

Keeping mine, it works great. Also I got the 3 year insurance from Squaretrade, so I am trying to keep it at least another year. I am looking forward to Garageband.

I see no real reason to upgrade to the iPad 2, so I'll be keeping my 1st gen. iPad. I'll certainly wait until the next refresh where I'm sure there will be more significant features added.

I'm still completely in love with my iPad, just as I have been since the day it launched and I brought it home. As more software updates keep coming out, its feature set will only increase. Perhaps not at the same pace or with all of the same features as the latest and greatest, but it has nowhere to go but up. I plan on doing the same thing with the iPad that I did with the iPhone - got the low-end original on or near launch (got my 4GB iPhone after the price drop), use it until stops getting significant software updates, then finally upgrade. That's how I went from an original iPhone to the 4, and how I will probably go from the original iPad to one in the future.

Interestingly, last night me and my fiancé went and got ipad 1's at the $400 price. We had a gift card and it was cheaper for us out of our pockets to get two iPad 1's then an iPad 2 and an iPad 1 (She really wanted one) it flies against my inner-geekness but then when I thought about it this is what I came up with:

1) My primary use will be note taking and maybe some games but mainly taking notes. I have an iPhone 4 for my internet surfing mainly and I can tether it to my iPad if needed so no 3G

2) All the apps and games that the app store has is out for the iphone 4 and iPad that is out now. I am not sure how long it will take developers to take advantage of the power of the iPad 2 but I assume it will be a few months at the least and again if I am mainly taking notes then will it benefit me? Early performance tests seem to say that there is little difference. The only thing I was concerned with is the 256mb of RAM the iPad has while my iPhone 4 has 512mb.

3) I really really want a retina display but that is unlikely for a few more years I think so I will wait for that to upgrade.

Interestingly, Apple has lowered the price of AppleCare for iPad to $79 as of the iPad 2 announcement. Not bad, and only $10 more than AppleCare for iPhone.

I also am an April-3rder, and I love this original iPad. Just as I still have an original version 1 iPod (still works!), I think I'll keep this original iPad in my personal museum of great tech. When I do upgrade, it will probably be to the iPad 3 with the rumored retina display (the feature I care about), and an even faster processor and with even more memory or whatever it has.

But I'll keep my original iPad. Maybe I'll use it to create a multi-window setup, where I can work on the new iPad and look things up on the old iPad.

I was waiting on an iPad2, but I just bit the bullet on a iPad 16 wifi refurb - $350 was just too good to pass up...but I hope I made the right decision - people seem happy with the original ipad, right?

I'm just worried about ram - how bad is program crashing due to insufficient ram?

Depends what you are going to use it for? I have just done the same here got a 16gb wifi for £289 what a bargain, I use it for web, photos, video, music etc and its just great, no problems at all.

Sticking with mine. It's working great with 4.3GM. I have no real reason to upgrade right now. I'll wait and see what iPad 3 is like a year from now.

+1

the fact that its the ORIGINAL iPad is nice, like we own the start of a revolution ;) i'll only sell when there's a retina, or much improved resolution iPad... at the moment, i'm mainly using safari, checking mail, viewing photos, playing music and reading magazines.

sure, the iPad 2's graphics would be a big improvement on games, but i'd rather save my pennies for a better iMac :)

I've never had an issue with crashing due to ram...I mainly use mine for reading, surfing the net, and watching movies. Maybe some that use more of the heavy apps have experienced problems, but so far I am beyond happy with it.

I'm not going to upgrade either. I briefly considered selling and then purchasing the iPad 2, but I just couldn't come up with a valid reason for doing so. I would have no use for a camera, or Facetime, as I have both an iPhone 4 and a Mac. And the thinness, while pretty cool, isn't a game changer for me either.

Can you fit it with you down there in Steve's pants? How is the reception?

I bought my iPad last April and still love it. 4.2 made it even better, and 4.3 will be another step up! :D There is nothing about the new iPad that makes me want to spend the cash to have it. The iPad I have does everything I want. If iPad 3 has a higher res display, I would bite. :apple: Not really interested in the cameras and I have a white "carbon fiber" skin on my iPad so I already have a white one. :p

£79 here in the UK.

And bad value, given that UK consumer laws would support you getting a manufacturer defect fixed for 2 years after purchase and beyond.
