I bought a MacBook Core Duo 1st generation blackbook. After about 7 repairs, and over 6 5-hour phone calls, I finally got a replacement with the new MacBooks that came out in November. When I got the MacBook, I thought, yippee! New macbook, faster, and more reliable I bet. I install all my software, and find out that some of the games I paid 20 bucks each for won't work because 16-bit color isn't supported on the new graphics chip. Ok, not bad I suppose, I wish it would work but whatever, I have an iMac G5 for that. A month later, the battery starts messing up, and I get a new battery. Now, in February, the MacBook's keyboard gets all #^$&ed up, and they offer to replace it with the same model. I do not have time for this!

In another thread, weren't you saying you were going to try to get Apple to replace it with a MBP? That's going a bit far, IMO. Even though I've been without my MacBook for roughly 6 weeks of the 11.5 months I've owned one, telling them "hey give me a MBP!" is a bit too much.

Anyway, I'm not happy with my MB purchase because of what I just said. A combined total of 6 weeks being without the system between the two is far too much.

Whether this has a good outcome or not, I will not be buying another Apple computer.

I love my :apple: BlackBook!

Upgraded it to 4gigs of RAM and this baby just flies! No more worries about the firewall/anti-virus etc under Windows. The 13.3'' screen might be much smaller than the 1680x1050 on the old Dell, but Spaces & Exposé more than makes up for it.

And that keyboard! Oh! Such a lovely keyboard! :D
I know that keyboard creates a huge divide in opinion, but I love that keyboard! The key press action is very nice, firm and clicky.

Any chance you could post the same thread just for MBP's instead?

I would if I could but not sure how to do it!

Thanks

I spent the money for a MacBook, for me to bitch and moan and complain that it isn't a MBP would be stupid, I am very pleased with the machine that I paid for.

Love It!

I switched to Mac in November with a 24" iMac and I just picked up a blackbook. I love my MB. It does everything I want, I love syncing my life with .mac, and everything works great!

Not enough options on the survey. I pick "mostly happy. A few nitpicks, but overall pleased"

I'm still deciding on:
The glossy screen (MB, so no options for matte)
I'm scared to death of the case cracking (hasn't happened yet, but I read about it a lot)
lack of video card (not a big deal. For my use this is "nit picky"

What I love:
Keyboard
Eeasy expandability (added 4GB RAM and 200GB 7200 RPM drive. Machine is really fast for non-pro video and photo work)
Mag safe adapter
Leopard
Size (spaces makes the 13" screen very usable. Overall light and portable)
Upgrade to the multi-touch trackpad like on the macbook air (please, oh please...)

It's been a year...

Almost a year to the day with my black MacBook, my first Mac. I'd been curious about OSX for a while, so it was either the MacBook or the Mini to get started. After years of various Thinkpads it took a little while to get used to the hardware and software differences, but the Mac is working very well for me. I'd also thought about a MacBook Pro, price wasn't a factor, but I'm not a gamer or video editor and the regular old MacBook had the power and I thought it looked better and had the better keyboard.

Overall I'd have to give a slight hardware edge to the Thinkpads. I've always loved their professional look, solid feel and keyboards. My blackbook is holding up well, though, it's taken a pretty good beating and been all over the world with no problems at all. I love the easy wireless connections and quick work to sleep and back to work. At first I was concerned about the lack of card slots of any kind but it's turned out not to be a problem. I'm even happy with the sound from the built in speakers (coming from a Thinkpad x30 will do that to you). Soon after I got it I put on one of those Marware palm rest protectors and I think that gives it a little cushioning when closing...I see no signs of case cracking, and it's opened and closed often. There is the flexing on the left side by the screws that aren't screws, and that's a little sad, but otherwise it's solid. I actually have come to like the glossy screen and find it readable even with sunlight on it. I love the trackpad, it's the only one on any laptop I can stand to use. It's made me not miss too much the Thinkpad trackpoint

Yes, overall very happy with the MacBook. I know it's not a pro so I don't expect super graphics. The new chipset and graphics, and the speed bump, haven't been enough to lure me to upgrade, but if Apple would just put in the backlit keyboard from the MacBook Air, that might do it. Okay and the LED lit screen, too. And I do wish the screen would open 180 degrees.

Sorry so long, I've been wanting to talk a bit about my MacBook!

I'd be completely happy if it weren't for the wireless dropout. That my only qualm right now. Otherwise, it's exactly what I want.

100% agree with the above. I've had mine since July 06' and it has been a good computer. I just hope the new ones gets these upgrades.

exactly, me too. It's great apart from the airport express problems. Does anybody here use their MacBook to edit photographs in photoshop?

Yes, mostly relative small images for web, but still...

Going from CS2 to CS3 was extremely nice, though... so was going from a 4200 rpm disk to a larger 5400 rpm disk.

OK, so the new 24" 2.4 GHz iMac with 4GB RAM feels (and of course is) faster, but not by that much... ;)

Love my Macbook. I use it for travelling purposes and, while I am still learning the Mac OS, I am really happy with it.

The MB is the perfect size for me. I have the mid-range version.

Does everything I need, including playing my Slingbox. I never even turn on the TV in my hotel room.

I'm really happy with my MBP except my third replacement is on his way right now. Colors were wrong on the first model, colors still wrong on the second plus keyboard is not sensitive (I have to press hard otherwise it misses keys).

I guess as soon as I have a perfect MBP I'll be 100% happy

I love(d) my MB. Just sold it to help fund an MBA, though (of the Apple notebook variety, not degree :p).

What I adore:
  • small enough footprint
  • magnetic latch
  • KEYBOARD!!! <-- pretty much why I sold my iBook to get the MB
  • magsafe

What I thought could be improved:
  • how far back the screen can be tilted
  • weight
  • backlit KB
  • option for those who wanted-- a matte display

Doesn't take a genius to figure out why the MBA appeals to me. :D

Couldn't have been happier. I have one of the CD models, but released in Sep. '06, i.e. after they fixed the 1st gen problems.

It really has been my 'go anywhere' machine, and after purchasing a new battery, it's back to its virginal 5 hours 'off tether' charge. Happiness :)

I originally purchased it as a secondary computer, but over time I've migrated most of my professional life onto it, with the result that it's my main computer.

Having said that, I don't tax the graphics card at all (I'm a programmer/analyst), and I don't do much gaming, so that has never been an issue.

Room for improvement? Of course, but the only thing I'm really looking forward to is 8hrs+ battery life, including WiFi. That is really my holy grail.

I tend to care for my machines, so I haven't had any hardware problems of any kind, so far. To be fair, that was also the case for the Thinkpads I had earlier.

Worthy machine.

I have an original Macbook and I still love it. The only upgrade I have done is bump the ram up to 2gb. It has been able to handle just about anything I have thrown at it.

Bought my MacBook a year and a half ago. After one year the power cord started smoking and had to be replaced. Then the battery went. Now 6 months later the hard drive died!! Enough is enough. We bought an Apple product because we believed their marketing propoganda that their systems were so much more reliable than other brands. NOT TRUE! We have 3 Apple computers in our family (2 MacBooks and an iMac) but won't be buying any more.

You either had a dodgy one mate and if not you obviously dont look after your stuff properly :)

i was really impressed with how fast it was, and it runs all of my PowerPC programs very smoothly. If anything, i thought i'd have more of a problem with that. Not at all. HOWEVER, it has issues with Shutdown which drives me crazy....it takes the Finder FOREVER to come up if i click on it.......and my iTunes seems to have some glitches. it freezes for a few seconds, sometimes.
I know the Intel processor is still in its baby years here in the Mac (even though it was technically being tested since the days of Puma), so some flaws are gunna be expected. But other than that i really do love my macbook.

I do a lot of Photoshop, Final Cut, Dreamweaver work on my laptop and it's been working great with these apps.

Thought I'd give this threat a little bump since, it's just depressing to see all the problem threats ;) (yes I know it's a trouble shooting forum but still..)
Had my MacBook (cheapest one ;)) since January and I love it...the battery power alone is enough to never want an other one...I travel alot for work ..and 10 hour flights are a lot shorter if u get to watch 6 episodes of Criminal Minds before the battery dies ;).

Leopard..has some issues but it's all good after the .2 update .. loving it..and never going back to Windows ..at least..u know..not while they're on VISTA ;) we'll see about whatever comes next.

Cheers from China. ;)

Love mine, and it's been almost a year to the day. I added 3rd party RAM after a week, and that was easy as pie.

I'm still not sure I'm liking Leopard, and tend to still use the desktop running Tiger, mainly.

I do love that accessing the RAM and Harddrive, and replacing those items is easy.

Yeah, it's been a total love affair for me with my C2D NON-Santa Rosa MB (white). Never a glitch, never a problem, even with upgrading to Leopard rather than a "clean install". Solid little machine, awesome keyboard, and the trackpad is genius. Wireless networking is rock solid, as is connecting via hotspots. NO problems at all.

My MB is proof positive that "it just works" is truth.
