I went Saturday afternoon to a BestBuy to check it out. I like it, I was pretty impressed with it, but I wouldn't buy it, since I'm not in the target market for it.

But the screen was nice, and typing on it exceeded my expectations. It's a nice toy, and I wouldn't say no to it if it was given to me. :D

I think that the iPad is the most recent example of Apple's marketing genius. It is well built, looks great, and, on the surface at least, performs many useful tasks. Nevertheless, it's not for me. I need a real computer with a real keyboard to do the work I need to do. Today, I actually test drove an iPad at the Apple Store in order to be able to assess the real world ease of use of its virtual keyboard. After this test, I was underwhelmed. Typing on the thing, while possible, isn't easy, at least compared to typing on a conventional keyboard.

Despite my reservations, the iPad should be terrific for Web browsing, reading electronic content, and checking on your email. Although the iPad is not for me, I understand why so many consumers are enthusiastic about it.

PS: I don't despise it.

it's a nice toy. I just would have preferred to get an MBP refresh before it was introduced.

Meh, I think it's pretty cool. Not for me, will stick with an iPhone + MacBook Pro. I think the iPad overlaps too much if you already own both of those items.

No idea why anyone would despise it...

There was a point to that though. Bring out the iPad, then refresh the MBP line, and you get higher than average sales from the iPad instead of people worrying about how much money they just spent on a MBP. My thought is that if I bought a new MBP today and the iPad hit next month then I would wait, the iPad is a luxury item that is unnecessary to my daily function. However, if I buy an iPad today and a new MBP comes out tomorrow then I will likely say that the iPad doesn't do what I want/need and the MBP is crucial to my day to day activities. I can justify the iPad then MBP purchase more than the MBP to iPad purchase.

We don't know for certian if the iPad is what held things up.

Have you seen the rumors lately? Some point to a shortage of chips.

Yes obviously the iPad may have created some logistical issues (or maybe not?) but i'm in the "Apple would have released them in late Feb/Early March if they could have" camp.

I, actually, like the ipad. I do not have one nor do I really have a need for it, but I can see the ipad being a key tool for some people. I could see a businessman reading the WSJ and checking stocks. Or an educator using it for numerous things. I could see a student using it at a university to take notes. I could see in the future (5 years or so) that an ipad would be used for elementary/middle/high school. I like the idea of one and might buy one after a later revision say 2gen or 3gen.

it is cool

Its a rather nice device but I have been bitter about it as I have been waiting for MBP refresh. I have played around with a friend's iPad and am quite impressed. However I just can't see spending that much money on it. Now if I had more money I would definitely buy one. I figure that at some point in the future I will buy one or perhaps sooner if the price ever goes down.

Perhaps I chose the wrong wording. I don't have hate for an object either but I am bitter about what its done to MBP and perhaps "dislike" it for its uselessness to me

I don't despite the product itself. However, I'm stupified at how a large chunk of the macrumors crowd thinks this device will replace every product in Apple's lineup, if not every electronic device on the market.

I don't despise the iPad... it's a great device.

...but is there an option to despise a lot of the people who own them? Because there are some major tools walking around with them right now.

I despise it for what it has done to Apple's focus as a computer company.

They are pretty slow and late with hardware updates lately in their MBP laptop and MP desktop ranges. The 27" iMac launch was sketched up with screen issues.

Well a sizable minority seems to be unspoken for in this thread. Let's see what I can do about that.

First most here has said that while they don't despise it, they don't have a particular use for it. Is it not fair to say it's a fairly useless device then? I mean, it's really just a toy or an indulgence. A toy that will be completely unusable in 2 years when it's battery dies, and the inevitable replacement comes out. A toy that can't be realistically used as a phone, or as a computer, but only as a dumb terminal that lets its dumb user absorb content like a mindless drone. A toy that's filled with toxic chemicals that will end up in a landfill, or going up some poor Chinese kids lungs when his parents are smoldering the thing apart, trying to get what they can of the precious metals. A toy that will keep those lucky enough to afford one busy from thinking about the real problems in the world, that aren't being covered anyway because the media is too busy talking about this new toy. I'd say that's pretty freaking contemptible right there.

/now let me see where I put that flame retardant suit of mine

I do not despise it though after paying a visit to my local Apple Store (Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold, New Jersey), the fact that the iPad took up two display tables right in the front was a bit disappointing to see.

As an american i'm often given the "americans should mind their own business" speech by buddies across the pond, so I will adopt such a methodology. It isn't my fault the only thing I have to worry about these days is paper or plastic

Apparently it was a wild scene in a lot of Apple Stores. These pictures taken Saturday outside the OKC Apple Store are an example. I had intended to go to Apple Store at a little after 9:00 AM last Saturday but when I saw the scene, I changed my mind and left.
