Im torn. I never bought applecare before but considering purchasing it this time around. Just because apple keeps rising the out of warranty costs higher and higher. 299 to get your phone replaced. WOW.

What happened to the good ol 229. I guess they had to find a way to make the plan more attractive.

Like all insurance plans, it depends on how much coverage you want. To be fully covered, I'd recommend you get the AppleCare Protection Plan (aka AppleCare+, AC+, APP) as well as AT&T's insurance. It'll cost you $99 for enrollment of APP and a $79 deductible per claim (with a 2 claim maximum). Use APP for any accidental mishaps, as it's cheaper to repair/replace through Apple. For loss/theft, you'll use AT&T's insurance, and pay the $199 deductible.

Another nice point, is that AC+ comes included with tech support for two years.

You could also go with SquareTrade. SquareTrade (ST) covers you up to the purchase price of the device. So if you break your screen or drop it in water, you can still go to a genius bar and have them replace it for $329, and ST will send you a check. That means with ST, you can potentially have your iPhone fixed many more times than AC+. For instance, if you crack your screen, it's only $129 for a replacement through Apple. For a $750 iPhone, you could have your screen replaced 5 times! If you crack it a sixth time, ST will send you the remaining $100 that you're insured for, and you'd pay the final $30. Sweet deal.

Also know that you can cancel your AC+ or ST warranty at any time, and they'll send you a prorated amount back. Therefore, if you have AT&T Next like I do, when you upgrade the next year, since AC+ isn't swappable between devices, you can call Apple (or ST) and get a ~$50 refund to apply to your next upgrade's AC+.

A lot can happen within 12 months.

Does ST cover drops such as a nick or dent? Also what happens if I decide on the monthly plan and I decide to sell my phone after a year and cancel the ST, I assume I would be responsible for the remaining months of the 24month period?

Got it last year and never used it even though i dropped my phone. Was told no replacement for wear and tear or cosmetic damage. Not covered for theft either. Essentially just gave Apple £40 extra free for a false piece of mind. I'm very careful with my stuff usually anyway so no point.

Skipping it this year.

I bought my IP6 2 weeks ago...I'm now thinking of getting AC+.

On the UK website they say I can either go to an Apple Store or call them. I will likely call them as it's easier, what kind of diagnostic software will they run? How does it work?

Thanks

I lost or someone stole my iPhone twice before so it is better with AT&T. My iPhone never broke or damage so no need AppleCare for me. I had AppleCare and AT&T insurance when I had 4S before. :apple:

They'll send you a text or email with a button to click that runs a diagnostic (pick the quick one, dunno how much longer the extended one is, but I used quick for AC+).

It takes a few seconds and sends the logs back to Apple. Once the rep receives it (few more seconds), they'll say you're good to go (or not, if there is an issue).

Here's an excellent blog post about the iOS diagnostic test with some sample logs (not mine, just found this because I too wanted to know): http://www.lyonanderson.org/blog/2014/02/06/ios-power-diagnostics/

Thanks heaps! :)

Thanks, everyone! Ya'll convinced me! Now just have to try to convince the wife why our bill will go up ($30/month on Next) or why we'll lose much data (old 2-year route) but keep same bill.

My next question: will the 16GB fill up quicker than previous phones (camera take pics that are larger in size maybe, apps or other things larger in size)?

I was thinking 16 (cheap-that's the route I usually take ha) I'm leaning more towards the 64 now.

I was looking at the same thing with my AT&T mobile share plan....so I switched to T-Mobile. If that would make you give up unlimited data, I understand; but I never used a ton of data on my phone anyway.

And durfinitely yes on the Applecare. Since I've never lost a phone or had one stolen, the carrier insurance was never an option for me.

Can I buy apple+ at target?

My 6 is arriving from Verizon shortly. Can I take my phone in to target mobile and add AppleCare? I have the red card so save $5 if it works.
