I was there on iDay. I've taken my iPhone through hell and back with nicks and scrapes all over the back, and at least 2 hair line scratches on the screen that you couldn't make out with the screen on, or even when its off really. I remember a girl running the counter at Best Buy looking at my iPhone when I put it down to pay, and saying "I wish I had an iPhone... [GASP!] Wow, I'd take better care of it if that were mine." I responded, "Yeah, well, I didn't get it because I thought I'd have to baby-sit it." I updated to 1.1.1, purchased music over iTunes WiFi, looked forward to using the TV Out again, and seeing a new update with better features.
I had my original phone... until recently (this week), and it has been nothing short of awesome. I've been admittedly highly irresponsible with my iPhone, and on drop 234, it hit the cement from about 6 feet up as it slipped out of an open bag, and got a slight crack to the glass (not crossing the viewport, just up by the top speaker). I thought about it, hemmed and hawed, and went to the Apple store with a sad face and my iPhone in tow in my original "iPhone" bag from launch day (prepared to just find out what repair might cost). They made it clear they weren't responsible, and that there might not be anything they could do (I worded my question of options ambiguously)... but ended up swapping it out for free.
Now, I'm back with a prestine iPhone... I'm using my Spec rubber case religiously, buying a screen cover soon, being much much more considerate with my handset, and at firmware 1.02 again, I'm throwing all my 3rd party apps back onto it, and reconsidering when I'll make the 1.1.1 update (when not if) while sporting my new Apple Bluetooth headset using my $100 store credit.
You may think this sort of excellent customer treatment would make me Apple's bitch...
--And you'd be right.
Boy, one sync and its like its the same phone again... but BETTER.
