Well, the iPhone 3G I bought on Wednesday was an older one with 2.2.1 pre-installed and it was definitely "snappier", but unfortunately a defect in the build of the iPhone itself made me return it 20 minutes later and get it replaced, and the new iPhone 3G came with 3.0 ... which I knew from seeing the Voice Memo's app on the iPhone on the box.

Comparing 3.0 to 2.2.1, 3.0 is definitely more sluggish and the animation of leaving an app and returning to the home screen isn't always smooth and fluid on 3.0.

However, it's not worth complaining about and I'm just happy to still have a working iPhone since I don't need to upgrade to 3.1.

3.1 also gave my iPhone a blackout. That's another reason I went back to 2.2.1.

Plus it's perfect for me because:

1. It makes me happy
2. I can't get push notifications because I have no data plan
3. I can't use MMS because again, I have no data plan
4. I only use 1 third party app, so I don't really have to worry about 3.0-specific apps
5. It's solid as a rock.
6. No stupid black-outs.
7. MobileSMS doesn't revert to landscape when I set the iPhone in my lap… I used to hate that on 3.1 because I would have to pick it up and wait for it to switch back… grrrr.
8. I never once used Spotlight (except for habitually flicking my screen for no reason).

I'm thinking about putting 2.2.1 back on my girlfriend's iPhone too because she's been having a ton of problems on 3.0.

you do realize that MMS are treated as text messages right? they dont use data (well technically they do, cuz a text message IS data), theyre charged as a text message. So if, like you said below, you have unlimited texting, you have unlimited MMS as well.

And I really have no idea what you mean by blackouts. Are you sure you didnt just downgrade because of that button in maps that was 1 pixel to the left as compared to 2.2.1?

I see no logical reason to be on 2.2.1 even on a 3G. My wife has a 3G and now that 3.1 is here we're finding great battery life, better usage, thanks to landscape anywhere and the overall a better experience.

1. It makes me happy
You should really find other things in your life because an OS should not make one happy. There's more to life then 2.2.1 (or 3.1)

2. I can't get push notifications because I have no data plan
I have yet to see a need or desire to use push notifications, in fact I have them off since it adversely affects my batter for no benefit.

3. I can't use MMS because again, I have no data plan
Why have an iPhone then, if you have no dataplan. Sell your phone and get a regular one.

4. I only use 1 third party app, so I don't really have to worry about 3.0-specific apps
See my comment on #3, you have an iphone but don't use apps - makes little sense.

5. It's solid as a rock.
3.1 is also rock solid but it gives us increased usability thanks to apple adding features we want/needed, i.e., MMS

6. No stupid black-outs.
Not sure what a black-out is, so I can safely say I've not incurred one. Perhaps your phone is defective. Contact apple, perhaps they can repair it.

7. MobileSMS doesn't revert to landscape when I set the iPhone in my lap… I used to hate that on 3.1 because I would have to pick it up and wait for it to switch back… grrrr.
landscape on MMS is not a problem, in fact at times its quite helpful - to each his own. I hate typing in emails in portrait, so much easier and efficient in landscape mode. That's one of the great features of 3.0 (and now 3.1) that people have been clamoring for.

8. I never once used Spotlight (except for habitually flicking my screen for no reason).
Same here, I've ignored it,and its not a problem .

You have a girlfriend

Seriously she should go 3.1, also make sure she understand what you're about to do or she may be pissed at you. Especially if she uses MMS

I'm using my iPhone as a go-phone. I was getting extra data charges for no reason while the iPhone was just sitting on my desk. So I called up AT&T and had them block ALL data from my account. WIth no data, you can't MMS. MMS DOES use data but it's counted as a text. So no MMS is a downside to blocking data, but I don't care because I never use MMS.

I downgraded for the *overall* better experience. It's my preference.

1. I'm not ONLY happy about 2.2.1. That's silly. I'm just happier when using my iPhone when it's on 2.2.1. That's what I meant.

2. I have an iPhone because texting on it is way easier than any other phone I've ever used and the iPod is AWESOME. Also, I still use wifi when I'm around the house or near public wifi.

3. Just because I don't use a lot of App Store apps doesn't mean the iPhone is less of a phone. It's still an excellent phone. Why have icons on it if I'm not going to ever open them?

4. 3.1 isn't rock solid on my iPhone and I can't use MMS anyways.

5. A "blackout" is when you go to use your iPhone and it won't wake up. You have to force reboot it to get it to work again. I've experienced one of these while on 3.1 for about 3 days. There's a thread over 100 pages long at Apple's website.

6. I didn't say landscape texting was a problem, it was just a pain to have it accidentally switch to landscape when putting it in my lap and then having to wait for it to turn back before I could text again. I like texting in portrait... much faster for me.

7. My girlfriend is so frustrated with 3.0 that she doesn't mind going back to 2.2.1. She said copy and paste isn't that important. Also, she doesn't have an officially activated iPhone anyways, so push doesn't work for her and it's a first gen iPhone so she has no MMS. Even if she had an iPhone 3G, she couldn't get MMS because her data is blocked like mine.

I'm just posting a poll to see if I'm the only one who actually likes 2.2.1.

For me, it's all about speed and 2.2.1 feels way snappier than 3.0, 3.0.1 and 3.1. Apps open quicker (especially Text), the graphics animate smoother, there's almost no stuttering and it almost never crashes.

3.0 was bad… 3.0.1 was the same… 3.1 was a little better, but still not as smooth as 2.2.1. Using 3.1 on an iPhone or iPhone 3G is painful, but 2.2.1 is smooth sailing all the way.

Copy and paste is the only thing I used on 3.1, so for me, it's a feature I can live without.

Long live 2.2.1 forever!

Once again your screen name says it all!

I guess I actually am the last 2.2.1-er on MacRumors. Sweet! I'm awesome.

Hi!
Does anyone have a good resource to go back from 3.1 to 2.2.1 or 2.2? I have a legal (or whatever) iphone 3G and 3.1 is horrrrrible in performance. So far I could not get it to go back from 3.1. Any help appreciated.

Just use PwnageTool 2.2.5 and restore to a pwned version of 2.2.1.

That's the easiest way possible.

try this:

and don't go to 2.2.1. That's ridiculous. Just downgrade to 3.0 or 3.0.1.

I upgraded my 3.1 1st Gen to 3.1.2 and guess what. It picked up its speeds like crazy.

Noticeably faster than 3.1. Finally whatever bug slowed it down was squashed. It is not as fast as the 3GS, but now, it goes back to the pleasant experience I used to have before 3.0.

Hmm… That's weird because when I was saying how much smoother 2.2.1 was, everyone else was like "3.0 is fine, and it runs just as fast or faster than 2.2.1"

3.1.2 is not as smooth as 2.2.1 yet. I'll let you know when it is.

thanks, I needed someone to tell me my opinion for me!

It's not opinion.

I tried 3.1.2… didn't like it… still wasn't fast enough (yes, setup as a new phone) and went back to 2.2.1 again… guess what, it was fast. So no, it's not opinion… it's fact. I compared them directly.

If it was the same, trust me, I'd know. I switch OS's more than anyone here.

I'm sorry but I fail to see how:

my opinion = your opinion

3.0.0 was fine with my 1st Gen a little slower but nothing I would go crazy enough to terminate a contract, but with 3.1.2 speeds picked up. Enough to notice. Everything I do now doesn't stutter.

If you're still running OS 2.x, you don't know what you're missing. Unless you're just using it like a regular cell phone, it's worth to upgrade.

Wow, from the looks of the poll, there are a tiny speck of people that have yet to upgrade. May I suggest upgrading yourself - the OS really is superior. I remember the days that I clung onto 1.1.4 on my iPod Touch, but now I laugh at the thought.

I wasn't saying that my opinion = your opinion. I was saying that I have proven to myself that 2.2.1 is still superior to 3.anything. I've tried every 3.x version there is. From the very first beta to 3.1.2. 2.2.1 is still faster and that's not my opinion.

I know exactly what I'm missing and obviously I don't it enough to degrade my phone performance.
