Proprietary hard drive.... REALLY?! Odds are if a user can even pry open the iMac they know what they are doing. What the hell was the point of this?! When 3tb hard drive become affordable we're going to have to wait until Apple decides they want to offer it as an aftermarket option?

I was insanely excited for the new iMac and now I'm pissed. Do I get a cheaper inferior previous gen model? Do I wait for the next update and prey to the tech gods that Apple decides to undo this horrific mistake?

Dude, Chill out. Just get an SSD internally (it'll boot faster anyway), and a thunderbolt external (Just as fast as PCI Express). That's a much better solution than cramming a 3TB 5400RPM hard drive into your iMac two years from now and sitting through the unbearably slow read write speeds.

BAM.

PROBLEM, EFFING, SOLVED.

I was going to get a new iMac and did. And after reading this, I still don't care. By the time I need more than 2TB of internal storage it will be time for a new computer.

Just cuz it is more difficulty to add SSD makes people not buy iMac? That's sad... I for sure would rather live with an iMac without SSD, then no iMac at all:cool:

What disappoints me more is the lack of an SSD option for the basic 21in iMac, but I suppose I should expect that given the normal Apple pricing structure.

I'm going to switch from PC to iMac anyway, but I have always only used a single drive in the PC (SSD system drive) with all user data at the other end of a GB LAN in a RAID NAS. (At least I have for the last 4 years). I'll have to short-format the hard drive to 50GB to make sure of the max read/write rate and just accept the hit on access time.

I'm looking forward to it.

Public ignorance amazes me. I wonder how many people have to successfully upgrade their hard drives and post their results before this is considered a non issue?

Currently using 300GB of my 1TB internal and 300GB of my external FireWire drive, so do I give a damn about a year in the future when presumably I'll buy a 2TB thunderbolt SSD drive and be done with it.
Honestly, people who angst about p*ssing about with iMacs need to get a grip.

amen sister.

A non-issue for me, and likely for 95%+ of the people wanting an iMac.

You know, I've been having some uneasy thoughts about OWC recently, this has gone a long way to cementing those concerns.

It's a non issue until it comes time to upgrade and then it becomes another reason to buy a new iMac. :apple: are clever.

Since when has less hard drive space and more restrictive upgrade practices become a good thing? There's an awful lot of rationalisation going on in this thread.

So essentially its a proprietary firmware by Apple and a modified power port on the logic board?

The main issue I have is after the warranty term/applecare is over being able to replace the drive to a higher capacity or better model or replace a defective drive would have to get one from Apple, but in that time I imagine some form of easy fix will be accessible -- though it seems theres plenty of workarounds for it now that should suffice while not convenient but neither is opening the iMac :p

Heck, I am still running with the stock 320GB drive inside.

All my big drives are outside! LOL

Did I knock the phone? I believe I made an observation about the phone being a fashion accessory to the "hip" group. The phone is fine.

Are you upset because even after buying yourself an iPhone, you found out you were not 'hip'? ROFLMAO

It worries me because theres no apple store where I live for if anything happens to the HDD... I don't know if I'll buy an iMac now

Bought mine yesterday and using it now.

I never had any intention of opening my iMac to replace the drive, so this was a non-issue for me, as it probably is for the bulk of iMac purchasers.

Find an apple authorized repair shop. My local one will install the SSD of my choosing in an iMac for roughly $100 labor. I can keep the invoice and thus prove that an incorrect installation did not cause any damage. If my iMac needs repair, I'll take it to the third-party shop. Likewise, if a hard drive fails the older folks working at the third-party shop will probably find a solution.

I think I would rather pay a Benjamin for an expert to install the SSD rather than waste half a day and risk damaging a new machine.

where is the problem , from Apples side the iMac was never meant to be consumer upgradeable anyway (apart from the ram ),
if you need or want a user upgradeable Mac get a MacPro and a 27 inch cinema display ..
always remember its a product from Apple and there is one rule that applies
and that rule is "It has always been more expensive to have a special taste".

See it like in the car industry where people buy lighter supercars (no stereo, no elecric windows,no aircon,no bootspace, carbon fibre seats without padding ) and pay more to receive less comfort then in a small citycar

Count me among the bulk, picked up a base 21.5" today.

I have been a loyal apple consumer. I have bought iPods, iPad(2010), iPhones(4), mac minis(2009 & 2007), 13"macbook air(2010), 17"macbook pro(2011), and a Mac Pro(2010). I have provided a list of concerns of why my Next Desktop purchase will be reviewed!

1) Macbook air RAM cannot be upgraded.
2) NO Blu-Ray Player. Yes, I like watching Media on Discs. Why would I want to pay the premium that itunes charges for lower video bit-rates.
3) Inflated Costs, I purchased 8 Gigs of RAM for 2011 Macbook Pro for $104.
4) 2011 iMac No Consumer upgrade for Hard Drives!
5) iTunes is too controlled, I have seen to many legit applications turned down.

These are only a few of my concerns, I have been a Fanboy for a few years and now I feel completely betrayed by Apple.

Sorry but I lol'd.

That is nobodies fault but your own. Through sheer stupidity I might add. People are always complaining that macs are just PCs now. Apparently that isn't entirely true, eh? xD

Okay okay, seriously. I bet anything drives through 3rd party will be out there in a matter of months. And no, it wont stop be from buying a new iMac. I am not that butthurt. Why would I be? It voids the warranty to open it up anyway. When I do and if, I will make sure I have the right tools to do it right. Thus, no problems.

People are complaining because a part in a computer that was never meant to be user replaceable is less user replaceable now? What?

You mean the new iMac that comes with Thunderbolt? I realize this causes problems if the internal drive dies, but for most people, the primary concern with the hard drive is expandability. It seems Thunderbolt would offer expandability at speeds that would more or less nullify this whole issue.

Uh-huh. It's all so believable, especially when you spam the site with that exact same message multiple times.

at least you should be happy that the iMac comes with a HDD fitted as standard , and you dont need to pay extra for that..welcome to Mac world :p
