The iPhone 12 Pro Max main camera has a 47% bigger sensor plus image stabilization on the sensor itself.
This should in theory give the Pro Max a big lead in photography quality especially in low light.
Do you expect reviewers to give the title of best smartphone camera once again to iPhone when it launches next week?

If the camera is a huge difference between the pro and max, I think a lot of people are going to be very angry. That’s me included. The pro was priced at the exact same price as last years 11 pro and it got the exact same hardware as the pro max. Keeping those prices the same and not upgrading the pro the same as the pro max is already bad enough. If there is a big difference, that’s a big issue. I think a lot of us pro user will be very upset.

There will be a difference, but even the increase in % over the regular sensor it's still a tiny sensor and that's the limiting factor with picture quality (pixel peeping aka zooming into the photo).

Let’s hope there is a significant improvement, but we’ll see. The photography aspect is pretty important to lots of customers.

Including me! I’ll cancel my order if there ain’t much difference. I have reluctantly put an order through and dreading to deal with the size only because of the camera.

I expect there to be a significant difference in low light situations. Apple went out of its way to talk about the new sensor and IBIS. If there wasn’t a noticeable difference in quality, I think they would’ve quietly listed this in the spec list, or simply waited until next year to bring this to all their phones.

Lol my 12 pro isn’t suddenly invalidated because the bigger version has a better camera. It’s a still a great phone with a great camera. Y’all really have no chill sometimes.

Between my 11 Pro Max and the 12 Pro Max I expect minimal differences. The 11 PM has a pretty decent camera so I'm not expecting a lot. I'm sure I will see some difference though. How much? Anyone's guess till we see some comparisons.

I don't think anyone is saying it's a bad phone it just simply isn't the best Iphone available in terms of performance and camera, that's an objective fact.

I'm no camera expert, not a pro photographer just a guy that likes to take photos. I expect there to be differences between the two based on the specs I've reviewed between them. It's not like Apple hid this from anyone. Part of me wants the smaller form factor of the 12 Pro this time around. At the same time, the upgraded battery life and camera of the 12 Pro Max are appealing as well. I waited specifically to see the differences between the cameras and hear real world experiences before I make a purchase. If you're mad because of the differences, maybe you should have waited?

I’m 100% expecting measurable and real good difference because essentially the 11 Pro Max has exactly the same camera as the 11 Pro and 12 Pro has already shown promise compared to 11 Pro and Pro Max.

47% sensor increase is quite a bit, so I'd expect to see a noticeable different in both day and night shots.

Really hope the reviews are out on Monday.

It really isn't. 47% increase on a tiny sensor is still a tiny sensor. It's not even double the size.
That's not to say it won't be an improvement, but if people are expecting this camera to suddenly become the best thing since sliced bread, it is going to disappoint a fair few... especially when you have to ask, if photography is that important they could get the regular iPhone 12, or even a 12 Mini and buy a dedicated APSC mirrorless camera or even something like an RX100 point and shoot which requires no real knowledge of photography. It's not just the size of the sensor, but the quality and size of the glass in front of it. Decent camera lenses cost more than an iPhone - so there's no way it's ever going to come close (if you know what your actually looking for), but as said for most it will be perfectly fine and computational photography has come a long way from what it was, which helps a lot.

I can guarantee that when you zoom into the photo or look at the detail you'll notice it has the same appearance as a water colour, a bit blurred where the iPhone has heavily reduced noise (grain) and destroyed any detail that was there.
Less so than the regular iPhone and regular Pro model, but if all you are doing is posting on Instagram, Facebook etc then your very unlikely to even notice a difference anyway when viewing on a phone screen - so for most it will be fine, but also I don't think side by side there will be a big enough difference (personally), but I am happy to be proved wrong.

This is something that hopefully Pro Raw will address (in reference to the auto noise reduction the phone does to your photos), but still no one knows anything about it really yet.

I didn’t say it wasn’t a great phone. I love my 12 and won’t upgrade to a large phone as I can’t stand them, but Apple putting better hardware on the bigger iPhone is a joke. Especially when you offer the phones at the same price as last year.

The photos/video demonstrated during the apple event would have been taken on the pro max wouldn’t they?? Apple would want to showcase the best they can achieve. Does this indicate what differences (if any) we can expect to see between the pro and pro max?

I actually don't understand how you think that makes sense.

You're compared a smartphone sensor to a things that aren't smartphones.

This will be a significant upgrade to smartphone photography and coupled by Apple's ever increasing image processing tech the photos will no doubt be a proper upgrade here, because that's why iPhone photos look so good now, it's not about a single component, it's about the total system.

Seriously facepalm at that chart 😅

I expect a significant performance improvement with the Pro Max. Apple talked about it during their Press Conference.

Definitely, look at the different between some of the previous iPhone generations and that's with small sensor size upgrades or even the same sensor size!

I do wonder how some folk survive out there in the real world :D

Maybe so, but it really shouldn’t be that big of a difference between the pro and pro max. You are paying a premium for the pro, it should be premium specs.
