Well kind of. The new all screen design of the X was the top of the tech lineup Apple offered. Since that new design, they made it even on the more expensive phones. I think they saw a chance to make the max a slight edge to push people to upgrade. I have a theory that most here won’t support that the max isn’t quite the seller Apple would like. They want to push people towards it because the margins are even higher on that model. If they can give people that normal won’t want a huge phone a reason to get it, that’s perfect for them.
It’s worth noting that there are camera differences between the 7 and 7 plus (extra telephoto lens) and the 8 and 8 plus (different main camera, and IIRC something different with the stabilisation...).

It’s fine to have theories about Apple doing devious game theory type things to upsell us to the Pro Max, but I don’t see any compelling evidence. It’s possible that the Pro Max has a higher margin (whether in absolute or proportional terms) than the Pro, but we don’t know that. For all we know component/manufacturing costs could mean that it’s the other way around, or (more likely) that it’s more or less even.

I think Occam’s Razor is helpful here - the simplest explanation is that with a bigger phone, you can put in bigger and slightly better tech.

But in the area where the camera is, there is no difference in size. They are just as then as one another. From what I understand the camera housing is the same. Has been for several years.

But do you think they didn’t have the tech last year and could have done it then? It’s not like the sensors are something new.
You have to take into consideration the fact that they have added the new LiDAR scanner which wasnt present in last year’s models. I am pretty sure it occupies internal space too. Also iPhone 11 Pro Max did not have a dedicated camera stabilization motor.

But the space where is the camera on the phone is the same in the max and regular pro in the 12 series correct?

As far as I know no one has done a teardown of the 12 Pro Max, so I don’t think we know this.

As far as I can tell the externally visible bits look the same, but who knows what the internals are like. It might well only be very slightly bigger, a couple of milimetres say, but that could make a difference.

Well the 11 pro to the 12 pro wasn’t that much of the jump was it?

Night time photos are much better on the 12 Pro but overall small improvement.

Yeah, that‘s why I‘ll keep the 11 Pro. If they had put the bigger sensor in the regular (non-Max) 12 Pro, I would probably have upgraded. The 12 Max is just too physically big for me to consider.

It's also hardware. The main camera has a wider aperture and LiDAR helps with focusing in low light.

True, and I love my 12 pro. I am just saying I don’t feel like this difference between the 12 pro and 12 pro max is because of size. If that were the case, Apple would have done something to differentiate the 11 pro and 11 pro max.

Possible, but I am not beating on it. They have been the same since the XS, so I am going to guess it’s still that. Maybe the tear down will surprise me.

Yeah I upgraded to 12 pro from the 11 pro just because I am on IUP. If it wasn’t for that, I would have kept the 11 pro. Had they put the camera from the max in the 12 pro, that would have made a reason to upgrade. I too can’t stand large phones. Well more like over sized phones.

I went from a 11 Pro Max to 12 Pro with zero regrets. To see the 12 PM get even bigger. You are lugging around a mini tablet at that point. It’s actually laughable and ridiculous how big it looks for a so called “phone”. I honestly think Apple is trolling to see how big people will continue to go. If the camera is better, so be it. Not worth the bulk carrying around.

Honestly, I expect no noticeable difference coming from the 11 Pro Max. I am more interested in the bigger screen and hopefully a Qualcom modem as opposed to the Intel trash.

IUP, obviously.

If you mean the physical size outside then no. The external camera „cutout“ size on the 12 Pro Max is bigger than the one on the normal 12 Pro. You can see that in various photos of people with the 12 Pro placing it in a Pro Max case. The Pro Max Camera cutout is larger than the 12 Pro cutout.

The 12 Pro Max is a little taller but the same width as the 8+, which many of us have been happily “lugging around” for three years. If the Pro Max is not for you, that’s OK because you have other options. For me, I’m looking forward to it—especially the camera.

Ok that was my question. Did see that in pictures. Yes the cases are bigger, but it doesn’t look like the cutout is bigger.
