Here's how I see it.... Apple gave all sorts of specs last week, but failed to mention the RAM for iPads. They mentioned the measley 4GB of ram on the base MBP, but nothing for the iPad would indicate that it won't be impressive. That doesn't mean the tablet won't be good, but does make you wonder what's up.

It was reported fake. For 2 reasons-

1. It doesn't show an image of who they are speaking to: which it does if you do if for real.

2. Lots of people asked them selfs and the same answer every time was "no one knows, it is unconfirmed by apple". Ask yourself, it's free.

1 isn't true- I launched one and had that image.

This would make sense if it were the first time Apple had done it like this, but it isn't, they never officially mention the amount of RAM in I devices where as they always do for MacBooks, however impressive or not the increase.

I asked several times. Ask again then.

Just did. Same result.

Are you in the US?

go to store.apple.com, click view pricing and configs for the iPad mini, click chat now in the column on the right.

Here's a screenshot of my convo, and I added a bk to the last message just so you see it is me.

EDIT- All I'm saying is I don't think that's a reason to prove that one conversation wrong. I do, however, not believe that a) the sales guy actually knows or b) could still be photoshopped, just that detail isn't wrong.

It's official - The Air has 4 GB of RAM.

My Crystal ball never disappoints.

I am in the UK and I have asked 3 times; same answer as you every time.

If you work at Apple and you figure out a way to save them 50 cents per iPad, you are in for a huge bonus.

Use plastic? non-retina lcd? 512MB Ram? Where do i enter my bank details for the bonus?

How do we know that an "iPad4,1" is an iPad Air? Could this be a test of the existing 4th generation ipad and not the ipad air?

In fact, looks like 4th gen to me:

Well, that settles that. A measly 1GB RAM...where's my checkbook, let's get this over with.

1GB…very disappointing. With the premium Apple charges and the margins they should be a little spec generous instead of skimping on the memory (base being 16gb and the ram) They don't even include a cleaning cloth in the box anymore.

I think it's pretty obvious that RAM to Apple is something that they have always taken the "bare minimum" approach to. As opposed to the 32GB PC desktops of the world, Apple has always been very proud of their optimizations, and in doing so they also developed a taste for the SAVINGS less RAM can provide when you are producing millions and millions of devices, especially if the difference is negligible.

And let's say for a minute that there WAS an appreciable difference with 2x the RAM... Apple would have the ability to spend a few bucks, with no R&D or fabbing for a new A(Whatever) chip, and instead could just pump the RAM and get the boosts to go onstage and get pumped about.

I have yet to find a circumstance where I wasn't purposely trying to tax my iPad (mini or 4) and had RAM become a bottleneck. In everyday use there's just not an overwhelming need at this point.

Millions of $$$$ + No overwhelming need = 1GB of RAM.

It's smart really. I wish they had all kinds of crazy features and specs, but at the end of the day I don't blame Apple one bit considering how insanely well they sell ANYWAY.

Just no need to do more. Yet. It could change, and if it does we'll get more.

Given how much they over charge for extra storage I wonder how long it will take before they start charging for more RAM?

They could have charged an extra $100 for another 1gb of RAM and people probably would have payed it...

Given they're now integrating RAM into the processor, it's not as easy as it was before. They'd need to fab a separate CPU. Doubt it'll be cost effective.
