I'll be on a family plan with wife and parents, it's the cheapest way to go. My dad and I are getting iPhones.

First two lines - 1400 mins - $89.99
two additional lines - $20
Two Data plans - $60
taxes - $20
TOTAL = $189.99 (approximately $48 a person)

Activation Fees - 36 + 26 + 26 + 26 = $114

Long discussion about family plan discount

Wow I just tried that and got an email saying

It says student. I wonder if I can apply this 15% discount to my family plan even-though I am the only one in college...

I don't think anyone every replied to your question about how this works with a family plan..

With all discounts (corporate, student), the way the family plan works is this:
The discount will be applied to the base price of the plan (for example, $59.99 price of the 700 minute calling plan); the additional line(s) will not have a discount applied. The data from the first line would be discounted, but none of the other lines. The bulk of the cost gets discounted, but if you have multiple data plans, you're kinda outta luck. That being said, you can have an iPhone 3G as your "main" (just by title) line that will be discounted, and have an old iPhone (which would not be eligible for discount anyway) as a secondary line.

To answer your question specifically, even though you are the only one who is the student, you can still get the discount on the "whole" account. If multiple people are eligible for discounts, you can only use one (so pick the larger discount).

BTW, the whole process can actually be done online; you never need to talk to anyone to apply the discount to your account.

Note: Most discount plans make upgrade fees ($18/line) free, but you have to call customer service (611 from your phone) to get them taken off retroactively. The good news is that with the corp./student discount, you get to talk to Business Customer Service, which seems to be a LOT better than regular customer service.

My scenario:
$60 700 minutes
$10 extra line
$30 iPhone 3G plan
$12 taxes
-$18 Corp discount

$94 total family plan (2 lines)

Only $4 more than I'm paying now since the new data plan will be eligible for discount ($30 - $20 - 20% x $30)

Are you saying that it might be possible to get a corporate discount on both the primary line of a family plan as well as on the $30 data package? Currently I receive 23% off the $59.99 main line of my two-line family plan. With a new iPhone 3G data plan, would I also be able to apply the 23% discount to the $30 data plan?

Thanks.

As long as the iPhone 3G data package is attached to the primary line sure.

So currently my number is attached to the secondary line. All I need to do is move my number to the primary spot and then I will still be entitled to the 23% discount I get now as well as potentially a 23% discount off the $30 data plan? With nothing official from at&t yet, I know this is all speculation, but if so, this would make it out to be an easier pill to swallow.

Thanks.

The discount would be (Voice Plan + Data Plan) - 23%.

I am considering getting the iPhone 3G because it would make my bill lower than it is now. The only question I have is if the Family Unlimited Text actually works with the iPhone 2G.

According to the leaked AT&T memo, this would be accurate. According to the memo, IRU discounts would be available for both the voice and data plan. That being said, you would need to ensure that the iPhone 3G is the main line; it's an easy thing for a CSR to do (it took me 2 minutes to go the other way around, putting my 2G phone as the second line so I could get the discount on the first line).

That is why many of these articles that compare the 2G iPhone to the 3G iPhone are so stupid saying that it actually costs you so much more. It's annoying. The price difference of $10 is actually offset by the discount (and $40+ voice plan discount for anyone not in a family plan); it ends up being cheaper with the discount. And, yes, I would venture to guess that 75% of cell users have access to some student/alumni/corporate discount, but maybe I'm just naive.

I entered my email address for my college and got an email saying I qualified for a student discount. However, there is no link to click in the email even though the email says the click the some link provided in the email. My question is there someway to get to that linked page on the att website or would I have to go to a store or call att to physically get the discount?

Is it possible that you have some type of spam control that isn't allowing links or something like that?

When I called the lady said that I could do it in store, I would just need the FAN (foundation account number) so they could set it up. At this point, I thought I was screwed because I didn't know it nor how to get it, but fortunately the FAN is located in the Premiere website page. But since you can't go to the website than obviously you can't see it. If you do have your FAN than I think that is all you need to do it in store, maybe also a student I.D.

Each of those voice plan prices already has the $30/month Personal Data Plan included.

Example: the Nation 450 plan is actually $39 a month, add $30/month for data and you get the $69/month listed in that graphic. The same is true for every one of the plans listed there.

They did this because you are required to get at least the Personal Data Plan to activate the iPhone, so they are showing you the "true" minimum cost of signing up for a given level of service. This could be $15/month higher if you are required to get the Enterprise Data Plan at $45 a month, which is mandatory if your employer is directly paying the cellular bill on your behalf (instead of using your SSN for the credit check, the company's business ID# is used instead).

I pay ~US$10.00/month with my prepaid T-mobile iPhone.

I would not mind paying for a regular plan again but my past experiences with AT&T were horrible and I promised myself to avoid them as hell.

This maybe just a personal preference and kind of off topic, but since AIM comes with the new 2.0 and AIM allows you to send messages or "text" to phone numbers, screen names... wouldn't that save you the $5/month. It's a bit of a hassle yes, but it saves money no?

My dad and I are both getting iPhones, I will pay for my own.

Our plan will be the 700 minutes.

So. $129.99 for voice and data. [I don't feel like breaking it down]

And then I will be $20.00 a month for unlimited texting for my line.
