You're basically in the same boat as I am with the jump in price. I wont be on a family plan but if I want an iphone it will cost me $55.00 more a month.

This was my whole point in this thread, to get people thinking about what their actual cost is going to be. Alot of people just see the allure of having the phone and glaze over the cost. Then, when that first bill comes in they have the "oh shiat" moment.

Hey, its a cool phone...it does alot of things no other phone comes close to doing. Is it worth $55.00 more bones a month? Doubtful....

Yea, Their family plan kinda stinks. I really needed 900min , but when I signed up, it jumps from 700 to 1500. I guess my rollover mins are saving me when I need them.

Sorry for the ignorance in the "text world", but I get around 5 text a month (from various "texters":) ). How much does each text cost, if you return a text, and dont have a plan?
And if someone sends me a text in the future, is the charge the same to only text back the words "OK" as it is to text a bunch of words? Ive never payed attention to texting plans, because I never do it. Thanks

I believe text are $0.20 each and they charge you for 150 characters whether or not you use all of them.

That is the exact setup I'm looking at for me and the wife.

$47 dollars a month for Unlimited text and early nights and weekends. That's just criminal.

I think this is what mine will be:

$39.99 - 450 minutes
$30.00 - data
$5 - 200 texts
--------------------------
$74.99 not including taxes
$8.00 - taxes ?

$82.99 ? Grand total

I have no idea what the taxes will be so I'm guessing somewhere between $75.00 and $85.00 per month total.

Well, for reference, with my current gen iphone plan I pay the following -

$39.99 -450 minutes
$20.00 - data

so $59.99 before taxes

After taxes, I pay around $71-72/mo.

So if you figure it this way, the tax is about $12 on a $60 bill.. so about 20% tax..

Take that over to the new bill.. .20 * 74.99 = 74.99 + ~15.00 = right around $90/mo

I suspect I'll be paying almost $90/mo for my service with the iPhone 3G

That's more than I was hoping for, it's really making me struggle with it. I do plan to port my landline to it so I will be loseing that bill.

I just entered my College e-mail and it says I qualify for a discount.

ETA: Does anyone know if college students get discounts? It said it would send me an e-mail but I haven't got one. And when I tried to join my college network on Facebook, I never got the e-mail from them either. It seems like my e-mail is only used for messages from my university. I sent an e-mail from my GMail to my univ. e-mail and nothing. Meh.

i think they should have a plan that has more than 450minutes but less than 900.

i'm stuck on which one i should get.

but the 21% off from work will help.

hopefully under $100

Wow I just tried that and got an email saying

It says student. I wonder if I can apply this 15% discount to my family plan even-though I am the only one in college...

/is jealous because you got an e-mail.

That's interesting. I wanted to talk to AT&T about it, but apparently you need to be a member to chat or e-mail them. Lame. I guess I'll just call them tomorrow. If you find out anything, be sure to post.:)

ETA: Nevermind! I found how to access my e-mail, yay! And I have the same message as you. Now... to make sure this will work with my iPhone plan, and everything will be fantastic!

ETA2: So, according to this, Unlimited Texts, Data and the 450 mins will cost me $76, instead of the previous $90.

I really hope I get this discount with the iPhone because it would help a lot. But, knowing my luck, it probably wont work.

As of right now we are all under the impression that discounts will work on service lines that the iPhone 3G is apart of. The discounts won't make the phone itself any cheaper though :(.

The phone is very cheap as is....the monthly bill the bulk of your cost over the 2 years of service commitment.

I just called them, and I swear he didn't know anything. He did say I could get the discount as a student though.

But he also told me that Apple was "very secretive" and that the iPhone could drop anytime now, it could even be next week. And as I was about to say goodbye he said what if I could sell you a blackberry for $1?

I was like nothxkbai.

I can live with that. Oh, and I do not have to pay extra for the text messages with the new plan!

My current Sprint family plan:
700 shared minutes: 70
extra for lines 3 & 4: 20
unlimited family text: 20
unlimited data for me: 5
nights/wknds at 7 pm: free
detailed billing: free
subtotal: 115
minus 23% discount: (26.45)
insurance for all 4: 28
surcharges & taxes: @ 17
Total Sprint: 133.55

New plan with AT&T
700 shared minutes: 70
extra for lines 3 & 4: 20
unlimited family text: 30
unlimited data for me: 30
nights/wknds at 7 pm: 17
detailed billing: 2
subtotal: 169 !!!! $54 more per month!!!
minus 8% discount: (13.52)
insurance for all 4: 20
surcharges & taxes: 20 as a low-end guess
Total AT&T 195.48

call it 62 per month extra, or $ 1,488 for the priveledge of having an iPhone with AT&T service. OK, so since it's also an iPod, knock off a few hundred...

But it's still going to be really hard to convince the boss (read: wife) that this is a good thing to do...

Don't know enough about ATT to hate them or not, but I sure hate their prices!!!

I can afford an iPhone, but I can't afford ATT....so I guess I won't be getting either.

I know how you feel. I really want an iPhone too, but the rise in the cost for the monthly plan is giving me serious second thoughts...
