Purchase an iPhone, get AppleCare, hope it lasts me to year 3, upgrade then. That's my plan down the road. The changes year to year on the iPhone are far less drastic now and my 'every 2 year' mentality is now gone. Better off upgrading only when absolutely necessary, lowers your monthly mobile bill too down the road once it's paid off.
annually, i begin to itch, get bored and annoyed with what i have by spring...the next 4 months waiting for september is just a drag. Having no time for cpu, ram etc upgrades or interests for my PC in past 5 years...the iphone is the only tech i look forward to once a year. its like a drug...

I tend to go for 24 month contracts so I change my iPhone every 2 years.
Not sure why I’d want to change it every year when they change so little? I see a lot of people treat them more as a fashion accessory though.

With the rising cost of smart phones, I think you’re finding out that more consumers are holding on to their devices much longer, simply just because they do exactly what they _need_ them to every single day, and it’s a tool for most purposes. Those who are upgrading annually, are definitely more prone to being tech oriented or Apple fans.

I think that article is correct for the US where it says the mainstream are prepared to pay £1k+ for a phone but in the UK where I’m from the iPhone X was the 8th best selling iPhone this year. The top spots occupied but the 7 and 6S with a 25% decrease in sales overall. People are already keeping phones longer, buying older and adjusting buying habits for these silly prices.
I think the industry as a whole is heading towards a crash and we are seeing the peak right now.

I’m in total agreement with you. I’m looking at Apple pushing up the prices of all of their products, and I’m just shaking my head. I’m planning on getting an X plus this fall, but if they aren’t going to lower the prices of the models, I thought they might start the X plus at $999, then I’m just not going to upgrade, or find a used IPhone 7 or 8... the tech that’s in the x is just not that life changing to warrant the price. Seeing Samsung do the same thing with the Note is just sickening.... are all of these companies making these phones for the 1%ers or something?

I’m exactly the same way. I have zero desire to upgrade my desktop as it’s great. But, I do enjoy upgrading my phone each year and sometimes trying out an Android phone along the way to see the other side. Phones are my hobby it seems.

I started with a 3S, then left AT&T for Verizon and got a 4S.
My 4S dropped today, so I decided to upgrade. I will be bringing my new 8+ back since the guy said it would work with OS 10.75 (which I was skeptical about). I am pretty much SOL, unless I buy a new computer. I love my 17in and have no reason to replace it.

Honestly, I don't think anyone needs to upgrade until their phone literally becomes unfixable.
For something I use all day every day, paying the few bucks a year to have that device be the most performant with the most features is worth it ... hence why I upgrade every year.

Or, the Phone is _No_ longer supported through iOS updates, which now would be a security concern or the phone is simply lagging because of the updates, which could persuade somebody to want to upgrade besides the phone being ‘Unfixable’.
It’s not that I need a new one but the way Verizon works for me I can get a new one every year without paying anything to upgrade. Yay me

I had to switch from T-Mobile in 2011 to Sprint to get the iPhone 4S. I stayed with Sprint and upgraded to the iPhone 5, but switched back to T-Mobile when the iPhone 5S debuted. Since then, I’ve upgraded every year and currently have the X. This will be the 1st year in 7 years that I more than likely not upgrade. I purchased 16 different cases to give my phone a new look and several skins to change the color and hold me over until 2019’s upgrade. I’ll also have my battery replaced before or on December 31st.

I’ll upgrade next year and add my daughter to my plan. Have to wait for the buy one get one free specials T-Mobile usually have.

Of course not. 🙂 I fully recognize everyone has their own separate priorities. But the question was asked, and so I answered for what my motivations were. 🙂

Yearly but I’m fighting the urge. It was one thing changing when the flagship was £700 or whatever, completely different when we’re talking upwards of £1k.
