When an application quits without you hitting the home button.

If it's one app in particular, blame the app. If it's happening throughout the OS there's something wrong with your phone and an exchange is warranted.

I may be mistaken but even if you restore, the crash logs are retained. If you take it in to a genius bar the first thing they're going to ask is if you tried restoring. If you haven't, that's more than likely all you're going to get from them.

It's sometimes just on the homescreen, or texting, or mail, or a regular app downloaded. I'll check into restoring. Is there anyway to save the list of 2000 songs on my iPhone because I have 20 gig of music and I don't want to sort through which I want for my iPhone again.

Crash.. on my iPhone?

What's that? Never heard of it.

Unless you mean that kart racing game! I've never played it! :D

No crashes for me too!

Before you blame the iPhone, just check what you were doing or what you have installed when the 'phone crashed.

Mine froze twice since I bought it on the launch date. I called 1800MYIPHONE and they told me that "iPhones are like mini-computers; sometimes crashes can happen, but shouldn't". I went to a store since for something else, and a genius there told me the same thing, in pretty much the same words, which leads me to believe that's a stock response they've all been trained to give as a first resort. If however your problem is pervasive, they said, you should make an appointment and they will run a diagnostic to see what could be wrong with your phone. I recommend (and I don't get tired of repeating myself in a number of threads here) that you do exactly that - you have the most awesome phone on the planet, you paid a lot of money for it, and Apple has responsibility to ensure the performance of your brand new device is up to par.

It hasn't crashed in a while. The only time it crashes for me is when I install a poorly implemented MobileSubstrate app, or one that isn't ported to 3.0. I'll have memory intensive programs crash every now and then, but that's a RAM issue, as I have a 3G.

From the list you provided, it seems most of your crashes are coming while using native Apple apps which is NOT okay. It would be a different story if it were the 3rd party type.

The music on your iPhone is synced in playlists. It's the only way other than all of your music. Either way it's coming from iTunes. After your restore you can just re-sync those playlists to your phone.

Alright thanks, it happens when I'm using the iPod part and changing songs which pisses me off...Anyways do I just plug it in and restore it to factory or whatever? Also if this doesn't work could I just go to my AT&T store or do I have to drive to Pittsburgh and go to the Apple Store? Thanks for everyone who helped me so far it's really appreciated.

Once iTunes detects your phone, right click on the left side where it shows under devices and click Back Up.

After that restore. If it doesn't help then your best bet is an Apple store. From what I've heard AT&T is kind of a pain when dealing with exchanges. You could also do it over the phone with Apple Care and have them ship you a new one.

My original 2G iPhone 8GB purchased on release day has never crashed once.

My new iPhone 3GS 32GB also purchased release day has not crashed yet either.

Just restored it so we'll see how it lasts. I mean I can't get through a day without it crashing so that's definitely a problem...I just want to see what my daily usage stats are but they reset to - when it crashes lol.

Never locked up since release day. Sure an app has closed itself once or twice in it's lifetime but it's so infrequent I can't remember the last time it happened.

The phone just reset to the lock screen in the middle of a text so the restore did not work :(. So I called up Apple on the phone, the guy seemed helpful but basically he wasn't sure if the apple store is able to check crash logs if they even have those. But my options were send the phone to them and be phoneless (or buy one off them for 10 days :( ) or take it to the apple store. I asked him about doing this through AT&T and he was not sure so I'll have to give them a call about it right now and post the updates.

Never with any of the 3G's I've had or my 3GS. I've went for over a month before restarting before. My original iPhone crashed and froze all the time.

They have to ability to check crash logs. Trust me.
