I have the Aluminium Macbook (not MBP) from 2008. It has been brilliant for me. I have upgraded the RAM to 8GB and installed a Crucial 256 SSD.
How did you upgrade the RAM to 8GB? I have a late 2008 MB (not MBP), and I was under the impression that the max RAM that could be installed was 4GB.

Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM. Originally, this model was only unofficially capable of stably supporting 6 GB of RAM, but as confirmed by site sponsor OWC, it is capable of supporting 8 GB of RAM if updated to Boot ROM Version MB51.007D.B03 and running MacOS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" or higher.

I just purchased this model from Craigslist to replace my ailing 2007 white Macbook which is on its last legs. It's a much faster machine than I expected. It's got 4GB RAM and a 500GB WD Black hard drive. I'll probably replace the HD with a SSD at some point.I have the Aluminium Macbook (not MBP) from 2008. It has been brilliant for me. I have upgraded the RAM to 8GB and installed a Crucial 256 SSD. Whenever I use the Mac's of family members I am reminded how slow a spinning HDD is and how glad I am to be using the SSD.
However, I'm on my third battery for this Macbook and despite the third one being relatively new I get around 90 minutes of battery life not the alleged five hours so I must have done something wrong somewhere along the line.
I can't remember the last time I used the optical drive. Probably 2012, ha ha.
The mac I am using is about four years. old. (mid 2010 version)
I am expecting another four to five years and I think that is realistic. I hope it will last that long.
I just switched the HDD with a SSD on it.

Do you notice a performance difference between 4GB and 8GB of RAM?
The battery has about 500 cycles on it with 80% health. How many cycles did you get out of your batteries?
I'll probably remove the optical drive to use with my other machines.
Well, as a software engineer and cinematographer, my list is pretty long.

Desktops:

Late-2013 iMac 21.5" (3.1 i7/16/256)

Late-2014 retina iMac 27" (4.0 i7/32/512/4GB M295X)
Late-2014 Mac Mini (3.0 i7/16/512)
Two late-2013 nMPs (12-core/64/1TB/D700 for both)
I bought all of them at around the same time when my mostly-2009 Macs (several portables and desktops as well, along with two cMPs) started to show their age, and started replacing them over a 2-year period starting from 2013. I don't intend to replace any of them until around 5-6 years down the road.
For just regular purposes (and even some medium-serious work), the 2009 Macs (which I donated to an orphanage) would still do, and in fact, the last time I popped by there to provide software and hardware upgrades for my previous Macs, they were all still running well.
Thanks for the reply. Is this going to be your primary machine? The single biggest performance upgrade you can do is to install a SSD into this machine. I do tech support for my Mum, Dad and Sister all who I made transition toand I get frustrated having to do things with a spinning HDD on their machines. I have a 256SSD from Crucial but I've had it for years. If I was buying now I would install at least a 512GB SSD.
I would also upgrade your RAM to 8GB as the Aluminium Macbook from 2008 can take 8GB RAM.
I am on my third battery now. I have purchased two official Apple batteries for this model and the most recent was purchased less than a year ago. I am currently on 291 cycles but I only get about 90 minutes maybe a little more before I need to recharge. I hear some people get 5 hours out of batteries for this Macbook model but even if I got three hours it would be a game changer.
Given how little time my battery lasts I feel I really have more of a desktop since I really need to be able to plug in and recharge very often.
I'm thinking of upgrading to a new computer this week because I'm sick of the poor battery life and I don't use the optical drive. I would love a machine with a Retina display too.
