Kind of confused, and yes I am a newb to burning movies :)

I grad SD movies from my collection, import them through mac the ripper, encode them with Handbrake, add them through iTunes and boom. I use the pre-set settings on the right of handbrake (ipod low-rez, ipod hi-rez, iphone/itouch, etc...) and I always use the ipod low-rez pre-set settings because the high rez does not work on my ipod.

Now for my question...

I am purchasing apple tv in the next week, and I want to be able to use the movies off my computer to apple tv, I want them to be the best quality they can be! But I also want them to be able to play on my ipod, is that possible??? Thanks a bunch!

Hd movies

Do you rip HD movies?? What is the source file?? please help..SD is embarrassing!!

A little of topic...

But what is the advantages of adding the Actors to the Artist Field, and adding the Genres of the movies?

I have 58 movies already converted and all I've done in iTunes is:

Info Tab
Name: Title of Film (eg. Live Free or Die Hard)
Year: Date Made/Released: (eg.2007)
Album Artist: Production/Distributor"main one only (eg. 20th Century Fox)
Genre: Movie - as that's what it is.

Video Tab
Video Kind: Movie
All others are blank

How have other people 'tagged' their movies within the "iTunes Get Info Fields"

Search for "MetaX" on Google.

The "low-rez iPod setting" will not look very good on an AppleTV. You essentially have two options... keep doing what you are doing and dea with crappy image quality on you bigscreen or start making two copies of each movie... a high quality one for AppleTV and a low quality one for your iPod.

I have MetzaX, but that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking what the advantages are of adding the artists and genres... does it really make a difference to what I've done, apart from showing more information. Just wondering if I should go back and add it or not.

No, not really. Just so you can have the information at a later date. You will also have the ability to perform searches for specific data. If you want all of your Jessica Alba movies to come up, just type in 'Jessica Alba' to your search bar. If you took the time to add actors and other assorted data, your videos will be far more 'searchable'.

Thanks for the information. I think over time I will go back and add the information like actors and genres. It just means that there is more information displayed in the section (tiled) which as a personal preference is slightly crowded.

What I've been doing the past 3 days is toying with different options. I also have a PC with a great external hard drive (which I will most likely use so I don't waste my superdrive's life)...using various programs...but ultimately, I came to the conclusion I will have to encode two different versions of the movies I want, for ATV and iPod...so thanks for the info about how shady the picture will look under low-rez ipod setting, thanks bud!

Just a side question...

For those of you who ripped a good amount of movies (100+ I guess)...how draining or strenuous is it on your superdrive??? Or do you use an external dvd drive (and if so, which one)??? Thanks fellow rumorers...lol

hhmm i dont get what you mean by strenuous. but i normally rip 2 dvd's at the same time if im going to, with my superdrive and with a external FW lacie DL burner, which is pretty darn faster than the inbuilt one. havent noticed any slowdowns or anything, however my superdrive cannot burn to blank CD's/DVD's for some obsurd reason..

Yeah sorry, I just meant does ripping all these DVD's shorten the life of your superdrive?? I did like 3 hours of research last night,, and I either came across a SONY external drive or a lacie one...so I want to invest in one of them. May I ask which model is your lacie and where did you acquire it?

I put in Rating, Year, Genre, Poster Art, Description, Director, Producer(s), Actors, b/c that is the info you get in an iTunes purchased movie and I wanted to populate those fields for the same look. I have bought a couple movies and ripped about 70 of my movies. Will have to take a screenshot later and post it. I have about 50 movies to go and I will have my whole library on my iMac. Then they can all go in a box in the basement. I also plan to get another Apple TV at some point for viewing in our bedroom once we upgrade that TV.

A lot depends on the media you use. I've found that Memorex DL discs work well and haven't run into any problems with CDs. I've found that, especially with DL discs, you need to burn at the lowest possible speed. Also, I've had 100% success by making an img of the ripped DVD using DVD Imager and burning it using Disk Utility.

P.S. if you have more questions about this PM me so we don't hijack this thread.

ohh ok. hhmm i guess doing anything like that would shorten the life of the components such as motors and laser. its bound to fail anyways.

i have the lacie DL d2 with firewire. (http://www.lacie.com/au/products/product.htm?pid=11001). very efficient and fast burner. uumm my dad either bought it form the apple store, or an australian store called streetwise.com.au. i cant remember. you couldnt probably find it really cheap online somewhere.

How do you guys search through your long lists of movies on the AppleTV? Do you have the scroll through everything to find what you want? Is there a quick way to jump to First Letter or by Genre? I'm on the fence about buying since i have a large DVD collection to convert ...

At the moment you scan through the long list (>400 in my case) going dizzy at the speed - then you overshoot - and go backwards - overshoot and then miss by one, the UI freezes for 4 seconds whilst it gets the cover art for the wrong movie, and then finally you select the one you want.

That's assuming you recall the exact name - if you don't - then you can't easily browse by Genre or artist, or date released or added. So I go to the stufy - use iTunes, write down on *paper* the titles I want to watch - and then go back to the ATV to select them and watch them.

I *really* hope that Apple get their **** together on fixing "My Movies" being one long list - it is unworkable. We *need* playlists on "My Movies".

Cheers, Ed.

Disappointing... That just about kills it for me.. I currently use DVD Lobby (www.cinemaronline.com) to run my two (2) 400 Disc Sony DVD Changers. I was looking for a more elegant solution for accessing my library from any set it the house and share them with my ipod touch. The DVD Lobby interface is extremely good at searching by Genre, First Letter, typing in a Search, Newly Added, etc.... If this was added to AppleTV it would be killer... Shouldn't be that difficult to include this functionality.. Maybe version 2.1?

If all your movies are stored on a NAS, can the iTunes associated with the :apple:TV be turned off and the :apple:TV will stream the movies directly from the NAS or does the iTunes PC always need to be on for this ? (Assuming the content was not synced to the :apple:TV.

Itunes and the PC will always need to be on to stream the media to your apple TV.
