Personally I've given up on Movies & I'm just concentrating on TV Shows...

I couldn't agree more. I enjoy watching my movies, but I don't mind popping in a DVD every once in a while for those. It's far more difficult to pull out boxes of TV shows and figure out which disc has which episode and most boxes don't have a synopsis for each episode included making it that much more difficult to figure out which one you want to watch.

I have about 140 movies in iTunes, and 1900+ episodes of TV shows. I'm in love with my Apple TV. For the time being, it's the 2nd best investment I've made (first being my glorious MBP). Soon I'll be getting a 50+ inch flat panel TV to further enjoy the Apple TV and all my shows. *dreamy sigh* Can't wait.

newappleboy, I can see where you're coming from... but personally I seem to watch movies 2-20 times each, where I'll only watch a tv episode once, maybe twice. What are your thoughts on this? Do you watch tv show seasons over and over again?

My current plan is to only rip 4 or 5 of my very favorite TV shows (Seinfeld, South Park, Lost, etc.) in full... and then leave it alone from there. But, then again... If I ever decide to end my cable subscription and buy shows over iTunes then there is no way I would delete that content after I had bought it!

I don't know... curious about other people's perspective on this issue.

With movies it gets boring re-watching it up to 20 times (According to you), But with TV Shows I don't know how they do it but it isn't boring to watch again & again & again.

Don't cancel Cable/Satellite as the iTunes content although there's alot is mostly of poor quality (Futurama still has all the TV icons on it as well as being poor quality:eek:) just keep rippong from DVD.

How many people still tag there Movies/TV Shows I have given up really I only use iTunes for my Music & the odd TV Show everything else is in folders which I watch in Quicktime which has the ability to fill the screen with 4:3 content (Which I have alot of) & you can't do that in iTunes.

I know some of it is not relevant:rolleyes:.

I absolutely still tag everything before importing to iTunes. MetaX is my best buddy when it comes to preparing videos for my Apple TV. :p

As for movies vs TV shows, I'll rarely watch a movie more than once or twice, but I'll rewatch certain episodes of TV shows over and over. For instance, my favorite TV show right now is "The Big Bang Theory". I've watched every episode at least a couple times and when friends come over who haven't seen it before I usually try to force them to watch a couple episodes until they're hooked as well. I just want to make sure that the audience grows enough to ensure this show doesn't get dropped after 1 glorious season. Is that too much to ask?!

Other than that, I rewatch "The Golden Girls" and "Friends" quite often. There are some episodes/shows that just never get old.

But don't you find tagging to be a pain in the ass?

Absolutely. But it's not too terribly bad, and the end result is a beautiful setup on my Apple TV that makes me the envy of anyone who comes over. In the end, it's more about how much I love browsing my TV show selection to pick something to watch during dinner...but making others jealous is fun too. :p

Hmmm... very interesting to hear a different point of view on the Movie vs. TV Show argument. I thougth for sure no one watched TV shows over and over again as much as movies. You learn something new every day!

I completely agree with Newappleboy about the tagging. I think those of us with AppleTV's would pull this line about 100% of the time. It is kind of annoying, but really, It's not that bad... and with MetaX and the chimp tagging or whatever now, about 90% of the work is done for you anway! You just click on the 'TAG' icon, and all of the data shows up. you may want to make a change or two, but virtually all of the info is ready. It only takes 1 min. per show/movie now instead of 5. Not bad.

My iTunes/Plasma/AppleTV is an amazing combo. Everyone that comes over to my house can't believe it! I always find it amazing how few people actually know about the AppleTV and how it works.

A quick question:

I've noticed that some peoples movie libraries are in excess of 2-3,000 GB's. What hard drive(s) are you using?

Originally I transferred to a Hitachi 1 TB - never do this! The drive constantly disconnected and reconnected itself, sometimes randomly staying disconnected until I powered it off and on. Now I use a Seagate and it's always on and I haven't had any problems in the month I've had it. I'm all for Seagate.

First off...I want to thank everyone on this thread for all the great information. I've just started moving my DVDs to my computer. I haven't even bought an AppleTV yet...I just want to get through some ripping first. One question I have though is "How are you guys able to get the Rating next to the movie title?". I'm using MetaX to tag the files and Handbrake to encode them for the Apple TV but when I look at my movies in iTunes I don't get the rating. Thanks in advance.

I pondered this for a while as well. It's actually a preference in iTunes that is probably disabled. Unfortunately I'm not at my computer right now to look, but just go into your preferences and I believe it's actually right there on the initial tab to show ratings. :)

I'm organized. All are MP4 movie format, all my music are M4A audio format. lol

Thanks!! I'm going to test this out tonight when I get home.

ayeying; I really like the way the TV shows come up.

How did you rip them? single file or multiple.

Thanks

Single Files. I used iSquint, Apple TV Setting @ Go Nuts quality. I don't know why some files have really LARGE differences in size but all of them plays perfectly on my iPhone, on the TV (air hooked up) or just playing on the air.

I have a question for people with tv shows. I have put in the episode number and the name of the episode and it shows up fine. However when I open it up on my apple TV it shows the tv shows back to front, what I mean is it shows episode 10 first, then episode 9, then episode 8 etc. How do I get them to be listed in the order they should follow in. I want episode 1 listed first, then 2 etc.

Cheers!

You don't. You need to convert them first. iTunes doesn't support the .avi format.

how would one "pass through" an .avi -> mp4 conversion?? im looking at passing through all of my .avi's (probably about 1000 movies, tv eps etc) to mp4 format but im not to sure about batching them while keeping them at the same size/quality.

You can't, but you get used to it. The point of this is for those who purchase their TV shows through iTunes, specifically using the season pass feature. This allows the newest episode to download automatically and then it shows at the top of the list when you first select that TV Show since it's the most recent. That way every time a new episode becomes available you don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom. You'll get used to it in time, trust me.

You can do batch converts quite easily, but be prepared to spend weeks on this. When converting videos in large amounts like that, I usually start one load before I leave for work in the morning to process during the day, and one when I go to bed to process while I'm sleeping. Size will fluctuate depending on the quality you select (you have choices from low to "go nuts"; sometimes it goes up a little, and sometimes it goes down, but it tends to be a little higher than the .avi format in most cases.

How do you guys separate chapters for movies? I'm using Visual Hub with MetaX and cannot tag chapter breaks because there are none after converting. I don't have this problem when converting from DVD's using HandBrake.
