How are you guys obtaining HD Content

Illegally!

I am permitted to make backups of any video or music that I buy, including my Blu-Ray discs.

are you using software to upscale?

My route is AnyDVD HD (Windows) to extract the .m2ts file from Blu-Ray disc, then use XBMC for 1080p playback with AC3 Dolby Digital surround sound on my Mac Mini. For the Apple TV, I'm trying out a recent HB svn to go from the m2ts file down to a 720p file (with AAC and AC3, of course). You can also use tsmuxer on the Windows side, then VisualHub on the Mac side to get 720p AAC/AC3 .mov files that play fine on the ATV.

Thanks for the quick run down what is the final file size after all of that?

my content

Most all my movies are tagged properly. Maybe 20 out of the 1700 + are not tagged. Most of the music is tagged also. Sadly my TV shows are not. but I do keep an online database with what I have. Just in case I see something I want to watch I can make sure I do not have it already.

Hopefully I should be getting my new mac in the next week or so. It's a quad 2.8 mac pro and will be adding a second internal hard drive with 1TB, just for itunes stuff. From there it'll be hooked up to :apple:tv.

After scanning through most of the pages in this post i'm addicted to the idea of having all my dvd available at a click of a button. Just wondering what I can expect to fit on the hard drive - It would be a mix of films tv shows and music. For example is an album about 40mb, film about 800mb (not hd) don't really know about tv shows.

Looks like some of you own a blockbuster store judging by the size of your collect :D

It really depends on the length of the TV show and what quality you rip it in. For instance, I've finally found the settings I need to make all my rips iPod touch compatible, and it makes 22 minute episodes just over 200 MB and it makes 45 minute episodes around 500 MB or so. It's not an exact art. You'll play with the settings until you find what you want. You sacrifice space for quality; when all mine were downloads and TV rips, the files were small, but now that they're legit they take up quite a bit more room. I'm about to have to get another TB drive.

I want his Top Gear's :D

I'll take that too :p

Here is my collection so far. Been working on it since Wednesday. Going very slow. Have more dvds to rip, and the rest of B of bs. Working on the 4400 tv series right now.

What i would do for a mac pro, and dual super drives

Cantthinkofone,
I was thinking about encoding the 4400 but heard bad stories about how the show was cancelled so abruptly leaving many questions unanswered. In your opinion, do you think it's worth the investment watching it? Or does the abrupt ending ruin the series for you?

Thanks.

The ending of the series? or season 2? The ending of season 2, from what i can remember, really made me mad. Left me asking a lot of questions.

I cannot recall the ending of the last episode of the series.

From what i just read on wiki, it was cancelled at the end of season 4.

To me i really liked the series. It was the first and only series i managed to watch every episode as it aired.

The show seemed to raise more and more questions every episode, and answer them bit by bit. But always keeping up.

The first season i think is the best.

If you can get a good deal on it i would get it.

p.s. does anybody know how apple gets their movies down to 1.5-2GBs? All of mine are over 2GBs. Some are 3-4 (Lord of the rings)

thanks very much for this insight! i am thinking of getting it somehow or another, i see the adds on TV all the time but havent watched it yet.

apple just puts the quality and bitrates down, audio isnt the best either. the rips aren't that perfect TBH.

I made these screenshots right after iTunes 8.0 was released. As you can see, some of the TV seasons show out of order, but I've since found the way around that. Just didn't feel like making all new screenshots.

youve bought all of those DVD's? geez how do you pay for them!?!?!

A lot of them I've owned for years and years. My whole family knows how much of a media whore I am, so they usually get me movies and TV shows for birthday/Christmas. The more recent ones I purchase with money I earn doing IT on the side. Lord knows my job barely covers my bills.

Impressive,

however you have disaster movie in your collection, which means instant fail

Yeah, it's actually quite sad. I don't go out or socialize much - just stay in and watch my Apple TV.
