How are you guys importing your DVDs into iTunes, and at what quality setting?

Are you watching strictly on your computer, or are you using Apple TV, Xbox, etc?

It's a bit of a vague question in the scheme of things. People are using a lot of different programs with a lot of different quality settings.

For example, I'm using Handbrake and ripping everything at 3000kbps, a slight change from the AppleTV preset that comes with Handbrake. Other people have specific settings for certain types of movies and tv shows - mainly achieved through experimentation.

I would say the majority in here are doing this for Apple TV (as it's in iTunes) but there are also PS3, Xbox 360, iPod, PSP and other presets available with Handbrake which make them compatible with those hardwares.

Hmm, so, seems like a firewire external would be fastest. But of the other two kinds, which would you say is better - an internal or usb external? Just curious.

if your after portability i would say internal, but if your going to have movies/musik on it etc i would definately say external just because it would have a tendancy to last longer + it wouldnt slow down your system as much..

yeah just finished importing the first 5 seasons onto my external HD.

now guess what... I HAVE TO CONVERT THEM ALL!!!
fun fun
ive been experimenting and im going to make them 650mbs ttal file size, with AC3 passthrough, 2 pass encoding, deinterlace on fast, denoise on weak and anamorphic PAR.

does anyone have any recommendations to change my settings before i start doing everything in a big massive queue haha.

another issue: i have my PC sitting here, (im on my MBP, i wont be encoding on my MBP because it is just too slow and i have uni everyday). i have been comparing quality of conversions using the same stats (that i just posted above) and i find that using my mac's the quality seems to be better than on my PC. im not sure if its just me or anything, i am about to convert the same file and post them (a screenshot of both files) up here to see what you guys think.

thanks guys :)

EDIT: ok just finished converting two of the same episodes on my PC and mac, ive changed my opinion based on the results they look exactly identical!!! i guess it would be a stupid idea to compress the images, so just take my word for it.

My friend and I have spent a very long time experimenting with different settings in Handbrake to determine what we consider the best possible format (for our uses at least). We wanted a single video file that would both work on iPods, look good on larger screens (we've tried up to 50" plasma and 113" projector), and a fairly small file size. Using these parameters and a lot of small test videos, I have come up with presets that work extremely well.

Keep in mind, I work mainly with TV shows, but the widescreen settings should work fine for movies.

For widescreen live-action TV shows:
x264 (h.264 iPod) encoder
Average bitrate: 1500
2-pass encoding with Turbo first pass
Output size: 640 width
Deinterlace: Slow
Detelecine: Yes, if applicable (I have found it eliminates choppy playback on Scrubs and Friends)
Advanced Settings (all but the following set to default):
Motion Estimation Method: Uneven Multi-Hexagon

For 4:3 live-action TV shows:
Same as above, but frame size can be left at full 640x480

For animated TV shows:
Same as live-action, but Denoise can be set up to medium (This helps to eliminate some macroblocking)

These settings work extremely well for all of the uses I've tried. The resulting files are around 250MB for 1/2hr TV shows, 500MB for 1hr TV shows. Like I said before, I've watched them before on very large screens and they look pretty good, and I routinely watch them on my 20" monitor and they look just as good as DVDs played with DVD Player.

Thanks, these settings work so much better for my tv shows! Before I was getting file sizes of around 400mb that didn't look half as good, so this is good to know. :) Just a quick question though - are videos encoded in this way supposed to work on iPods, because I still had to convert mine...am I missing something?

Yeah, I'd rather have the portability... just hope it doesn't slow things down *too* much...

Would not having iTunes open all the time help things? Or would the presence of these files on my drive alone cause slowness?

leaving itunes open all the time wouldn't effect anything. however i would make sure to get a 7200RPM drive, otherwise then you may see slight pauses when doing things such as playing a movie and working on something else, which can be a pain in the butt.

if you just have itunes open doing nothing the only slowdown it will cause is mainly RAM (which would only be noticeable if you ran out of the stuff which is hard to do). if you have less that 10gb-15gb on your hard drive then it will definately cause some problems. as long as you stay above this mark then i think you will not notice any slow downs at all.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I usually like to keep that amount free on a hard drive because it makes me nervous not to, but I definitely will make a point to do so now!

Bought my iMac last week and now finding it easier than ever to organize media for use in iTunes. After having a read of this forum I tried the tagger metax but it just keeps crashing, next tried the program lostify, which was ok but for some reason didnt work %100 when changing certain tags. Finally I tried "set video kind" script from dougscripts.com and this works great for basic batch video tagging.

Ive also ordered an apple mini-dvi to VGA to connect to my 50inch plasma. Hopefully the picture quality is decent enough, so I can sit back and enjoy my itunes library

Slogan, although I wouldn't do that b/c my philosophy is that I'm ripping my movies onto my computer to get away from the hard copy format era - I really like the way that looks. Pretty cool man.

i dont like using the IMDB information because the description gets clipped because its waaaayyyy too long. however the information they have is very handy and accurate, easy to get aswell!

I'm copying from the ITMS, not the IMDB.

Sad face because it took an absolute age to do it! :D

It's a Photoshop case and I slip the dvd covers into the document and output with .png. Needless to say I scanned them all in myself [from my collection] - wasn't happy enough with the workload so thought I'd give myself more...

As much as I'd love to, I can't take credit for the document. I was looking around for a tutorial on how to make one and managed to find one already made.

Reason I did it was because I was getting annoyed with the faded/damaged edges that dvd cover slips seem to have. It's always visible against the background.

Enjoy. :)

I've pretty much just given up as of recent. I'm burnt out on encoding, and I'm having problems w/ thinking of good movies to fill my 2 TB with. Everything is encoded in at least the Apple TV present w/ 2 pass (2500) and 5.1 audio. All custom artwork. Everything is labeled w/ artist, directors, genre, and taglines (work nice because they actually fit in the amount of space given for description). Some HD content (around 100 movies). Most of the HD content is 720p at 6000 kbits/sec. All with 5.1 AC3 audio. works, sounds, and looks great.

Right now I have about 50 or so movies that definitely need to be replaced by better movies (some of which are in the screenshot I provided) and about another 50 movies that can be replaced w/ better movies if need be. If anyone has any movie suggestions (more obscure suggestions - not like star wars, or indiana jones, or memento, donnie darko) I'd gladly listen to them.
