Plex simply identifies the file (local or networked) as video or audio and ignores all others. If it's a movie with the IMDB name (e.g., "Iron Man (2008)") then Plex will parse IMDB for the artwork, description, rating, etc. and download that info automatically. If you delete the movie, then Plex deletes this info automatically. It even works with the Apple remote (although I use a Harmony).

It does not integrate with iTunes' XML database, but I understand that is a future feature. So it's coming. I really miss it for music, but not at all for movies.

I just had a look at it, it just sounds too good to be true :D

I also put mine into plastic cases, and my library size is climbing very fast.

I'll take that too :p

Here is my collection so far. Been working on it since Wednesday. Going very slow. Have more dvds to rip, and the rest of B of bs. Working on the 4400 tv series right now.

What i would do for a mac pro, and dual super drives

For this reason alone I am thinking about adding another drive. I have a lot of movies to rip through and only one drive.

Also, how are you guys/gals orinizing your movies: IE

Movies>>Movie Name Folder>>Movie File

or

Movies>>Movie File

Thanks

If I were you I would do it like this: Movies/DVDs/Movie Name.mp4

And for TV shows: Movies/TV Shows/TV Show Name.mp4

I like have folders to choose from when I click on the "Movies" sidebar... rather than just a bunch of files.

Here's my screenshots...

MetaX

MetaX saved me so much time! It is a great program. I found that it crashed on me when I loaded movies into it using the File/Open command. I found that if I drag/drop the movie files, it does not crash!

That sure does look good! I have it on my macbook, but for viewing movies on a large screan I only have the Appletv, I was waiting to see if they bring new Mac Mini's out before going down that route, but it does look much better, and being able to play MKV files etc is great..

He isn't using the Plex + Aeon Skin as they are the screens from the site not his own ones.

Blah141: I have to ask you this, how do you organize your movies now? I mean now that your using Plex you can't use iTunes to organize your movies?

Well i don't use itunes to play movies, plex can play almost every format imaginable, so everything happens from inside plex itself!
and for organizing, plex does it automatically for you

So you don't use iTunes to organize them, and I guess that you have an external drive with all your movies

At last, some people with a library like mine! i have over 200GB of tv shows, and 109GB [10 minuts ago] of Movies and 6GB of music.

Kinda nice to have Time Capsule around...

Plex organizes by folder, not by XML database. You also need to put Plex in Library mode and name the movie files according to IMDB nomenclature (including year).

Okay, I understand. Don't get me wrong, I think Plex looks great and is a fantastic idea! Finally you can forget thinking about re-encoding mkv's and .avi's. No more problems with 5.1 surround sound or making all the videos compatible with AppleTV.

But my problem is that, I am so used to iTunes that even though Plex seems a lot easier (when you get used to the naming of files) I think I will have a hard time going back to the "windows" way of organizing files.

It is kinda nice having all your files organized in iTunes:D

What do you guys think?

I want Plex really, really bad. If Stevie would just release Snow Leopard so I can finally upgrade from Tiger I could get Plex and be a happy camper.

Yep the re-encoding MKV is a pain, although I use a Mac Pro to do it so it doesn't take too long. Metax is brilliant but very buggy, so I have been looking for an alternative to ATV, but iTunes does a few brilliant things , that is organise everything and sync! so whe I take some pictures of the family come home and put it into iPhoto, it's not just backed up with time machine but backup up to ATV and I can view it straightway on my big plasma.
I have over 400GB of movies and 80GB of music that stream to the ATV, whilst the photo's are stored. It's just if the ATV interface was updated a bit better it would be great. I have yet to try Boxee so that might be the thing..
Can plex do the same hing?
