Wow...Hopefully this person is not someone who considers you a friend, if so, well lets just say TOS prevents me from saying what I really want to say.

In any case, not everyone is 100% computer literate. Some people (like me) could care less about specs as long as we have something that works.

^^ This. Only "hacks" post that they know more than someone else. Who cares? A doctor is only a doctor because he read some books.

I have had clients ask me whether they should use Firefox or Google, and also to 'just get rid of that annoying anti-virus' crap

licensing humans to use computers would make the world a better place

Clearly you are the smartest person on the planet, so much so, that you can spot and publicly humiliate people at will. I bow to your greatness....glad I do not call people like you friends. Poor guy probably thought you were a nice person too.

BFD, the guy didn't know about his computer? BFD indeed, I wouldn't call him stupid, I would say he just isn't anal about such things. Different people care about different things, my wife doesn't know crap about the car she drives, how much power, engine size even brand, and yet she can drive it just fine, never had an accident in over 20 years of driving....she is far from stupid.

Ignorant people are the ones the hide befind the curtain and call everyone else ignorant.

Lets just say we're friends on facebook :)
I do consider myself to be ignorant but I just don't show it in the outside...
in the end, I always forgive because everyone has their field that they're stupid in.
besides, my roommate has an iphone and all he knows is how to watch movies, call people, listen to songs, and download apps.
I'm just the kind of person who expects people to actually know something about the product that they buy.
I just can't tolerate the "it just works" attitude.
Although I may be thinking 'Just how stupid are you?' on the inside, I always show people how to do stuff right :)

Yesterday, I was helping this person with his macbook pro cos he wanted to run windows on it. I asked him for the specs and he told me he had an i7, 8gb memory, 750gb storage, and was running lion.

Once I got to his laptop, he opened it up and I asked him did he know how to bootcamp. He shook his head and I forced a smile. "No problem!" I said, get out your copy of windows 7 and I'll do it for you. "Uhhh... you were supposed to have that?" was what I got. Restraining myself, I pulled out my external hard drive and put a copy of my iso on his desktop.

After the copying was finished, I tried to make another desktop and was shocked to see that he was running snow leopard. When I questioned him about it, I got "This can't be! I spent $2000 on this macbook! and its pro too!" Once again, I forced a smile on my face and pulled up his specs. It turns out he had and i5, 4gb memory, and 350gb storage. "I can't see how you can spend $2000 on this" I said to him and he replied "I don't see how either! I'm just as surprised as you are!" After checking if he had anti-virus on his mac (he didn't) I bootcamped windows for him. I left with the most annoying statement from him ringing in my head "I don't care about all that fancy anti-virus and other stuff like that. In my opinion, if a computer works, then I'm fine with that!"

pretty stupid, man. i see a bunch at the Apple Store all the time. makes for some darn good people watching on the weekends!

Again, TOS presents me from saying what I really want to say. This thread and your attitude really have me riled up, mainly because your arrogance is obvious, and I can not stand arrogance.

I can say that I am glad you are not my friend, because I would hate to ask you to help me with something and than have you turn around and say how stupid I am because I can not do "X, Y. Z".

You say you expect people to know something about the product they buy, do you own a car? If so do you know the specs off the top of your head, how to do your own maintenance (beyond a basic oil change), etc...Do you own a home? If so are you able to do your own maintenance (plumbing, electrical, etc)..If not do you consider yourself "stupid??"

Again not everyone cares or is interested in specs. Truth is most people who are casual consumers and who do not rely on their computers to make a living (i.e. graphic artists, photographers, etc) do not really need to know this stuff.

Furthermore, and this is something you will find out once you fully grow up and mature, many people simply do not have the time to fully understand all of this. When you factor in the responsibilities that go with having a full time career (not a "job" but a career, hopefully you are old enough to understand this difference), having a family, and maintaining a home knowing the insides and out of a product you purchase becomes less and less important. What is important is that you buy something that "just works" because you don't have time to waste on something that will not work.

Good luck in life dealing with other people...With the attitude you have you will need all the luck you can get.

I do not own a car and I do consider myself stupid because I don't know these things. And here I am listening to the "wisdom" of my previous/modern generation. Apparently the people in this generation are too ignorant and/or have no patience that they aren't aware of the painfully obvious facts. Also, when a person buys something that "just works" they're actually hindering the economy. By having higher standards, consumers can make the producers develop higher and more sophisticated technology and thus increase development. Besides, you make having a family, maintaining a home and getting a career extremely challenging so much that people don't "have time to waste on something that will not work". Well, think about what will happen to their computer that "just works" when they get a virus, get hacked, or crashes. I actually have a friend who's a hacker that tricks people with a virus download and/or email that infects their computer. It's non-detectable with 90% of the anti-virus available in the market and once infected, the program will steal personal information (aka credit cards, identity, and/or email addresses) and upload to his server. If 90% of the anti-virus on the web can't detect this virus then what about the people who don't even have anti-virus? Oh, and did I mention I don't show my attitude to others? I keep it inside until it's time for me to write a paper :) This is actually becoming a nice debatable topic.

Well you see sir, not everyone came out of their mother's womb knowing everything there is to know about computers like you did. And I'm sure the car that you bought (or will buy) - you know everything there is to know about it don't you. I'm sure you will never need a mechanic because you know everything there is to know about the stuff you buy. Good luck in life cause your are going to need it with that attitude. Oh and while you are at work showing everyone how to do things right can you please document for me (and apple) why my wifi is always going out under Lion. I'm sure they can use your brilliance.

You know that actually happened to me the first time I installed lion :(
After a harsh criticism, I would LOVE to answer your question.
I went to my system preferences, networks and clicked wifi and then advanced and removed all my preferred networks. I then let lion auto-detect my wifi and put in the password. No more disconnections for me :)
Oh, when all else fails, try google. It fixes 80% of my problems in under 20 minutes!

Life's answers aren't always in Google. Been there done that. Tried all of the recommendations.

I get a bit confused-am I supposed to install AV software on my machines running OSX or not?

Does the fact I have not done that yet make me stupid and if so-how much exactly? On a 10 scale?

It's recommended that you do. Theres actually a trojan chinese pdf file floating around the internet somewhere that will infect your computer if you download it. You may wanna check out the thread that debates whether macs need AV or not. There was a time where people said macs were the "most secure OS in the world" but that's not true anymore. Even macs can get viruses. My friend, the hacker, managed to infect a mac server with a RAT and obtain all the information. He's now used about $1000 of the guy's money (in separate payments) through paypal and credit card. In the end, even the most "secure" of systems and AV can be compromised. The best AV is common sense and you. I would give you an 8 on the scale.

Cheers! :)

I find it interesting that someone who has proclaimed himself so tech-savy doesn't even know the difference between a trojan and a virus.

But to the point...can you just stop posting already? Your cringe-worthy, baseless, attention-seeking posts are more transparent than the 5th ave apple store entrance.

Ugh.

Apparently, until this thread gets shut down, you can't do anything about it besides whine.

Regarding the car-thing; When you own a car, you should at least know how to change the oil and refuel it, right? That's basic knowledge. And knowing what "specs" the car has is also basic knowledge.

When buying ANYTHING you should do your research and know something about it without just jumping in unprepared. This applies to anything, not just computers. This "doing research" thing isn't exactly rocket-science either, you aren't required to know how to pick it apart and assemble it again. But knowing the specs at least.. otherwise you could have bought anything and you won't know what it is.

"Oh is this an Apple Macbook Pro.. I had no idea..".
I mean, come on. Using your brain once in a while won't hurt you people.

I fully get, and respect, that some people aren't interested in knowing how things work but knowing WHAT you buy is essential in anything. For instance, if I'm buying a new fridge, I am not even slightly interested in fridges and don't want to know how they work. However, I still need to know the specs, like the power consumption, how cold it can get, etc etc(I have no idea what specs to look for in fridges, it was just an example). Otherwise I could buy a fridge that might be completely wrong for me.

Use common sense people!

So when you are wrong about something you just write it off as "well, I think it's right, so it's right"?

Must be nice living in such a fantasy land! :p

No, I know its wrong. Under my definition, it is a "virus". It may not be for other people, but it just pertains to me.
Now if you excuse me, I'll go take a dip in my fantasy pool :p

Theres actually a trojan chinese pdf file floating around the internet somewhere that will infect your computer if you download it.

This PDF malware was not found in the wild.

This PDF Trojan horse was not found in the wild, and is most likely simply a proof of concept.

http://blog.intego.com/2011/09/23/mac-pdf-trojan-horse-surfaces-threat-is-low/

Given that it was a binary file masquerading as a PDF, the file quarantine feature in OS X would warn you that it is an executable prior to opening the file.

Also, a definition for this malware has been added to XProtect, which is the built-in anti-malware feature in SL and Lion, so the system will also warn you that it is malware.

This trojan also doesn't achieve system-level access so it has very little efficacy in relation to automated mass malware targeting Mac users.

See the following thread for more details:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1234691/

There was a time where people said macs were the "most secure OS in the world" but that's not true anymore.

Major overhaul makes OS X Lion king of security

My friend, the hacker, managed to infect a mac server with a RAT and obtain all the information.

This would require an error on the part of the user to accomplish.

Exploiting the user to compromise a system can occur regardless of the OS in use.

Nice! you managed to debunk every statement I made! You've got my respect...

Exploiting the user to compromise a system can occur regardless of the OS in use.

This!
If this is true, then I don't see why everyone here seems to almost despise Mac-users who wants AV-software.

What is wrong with having an AV that can better detect harmful files and malware before installing something? Surely it won't detect everything but at least it's better than to install it and THEN find out if it was a virus/trojan/malware/whatever other definition you would like to call it.

This post isn't really directed to you but to anyone who says that AV for Mac is useless. It's not useless. It increases protection against user-errors. And let's face it, none of us is perfect, we all make mistakes, errors. So having protection against user-errors is in my book a sensible choice.

I like your way of thinking! Some of my friends need to see the AV thread.

Like the guy I met in a pub who didn't go home before 9pm because his wife had given him 2 daughters.
