So does the other device have to be on ios 13 to pick up that signal and know what to do with it? So would only apply to updated apple devices?

There are actually three IOS/MacOS devices involved:
  1. the "lost" device owned by self [target of the "find"]
  2. the "paired" proxy device owned by self [querier of the "find"]
  3. the ""reporting" device owned by a stranger ["man-in-the-middle"]
All three need be running mid-2019 or better iOS and/or macOS.
[As I said earlier, No. 3 location reports, will place a large burden on the Apple servers due to the problem size.]

How do I install this technology on my child? I worry a lot about child sex trafficking. They busted a ring of it in my city not long ago. They had children having sex for money in this seedy motel. Horrifying. Can’t wait for this kind of technology to be miniaturized into a ring, or maybe even sewn into the sole of a shoe and powered kinetically by walking. To be clear, I don’t want to be a helicopter parent, but my daughter is 5 and just starting school. When I was a kid we could wander all over, and I want that for her, but we also didn’t have sex trafficking like this in small and medium sized towns. I’ve been trying to teach her stranger danger, but she gets really freaked out when I talk with her about it. I try to explain that most people are good, but she still gets scared about the bad people. It doesn’t help that I hardly ever see kids playing outside in our neighborhood, which is in a fairly nice part of town. Kids are safer in numbers and the numbers just aren’t there any more. As a kid I could go out in the evening in the summer and play a massive game of hide and seek with 20 kids about any time I wanted to. That was only in the 90s.

I don’t know where you live, but statistically it’s been proven that TODAY your child is far safer than at any period in the last 100 years from abduction, murder etc etc. Yes that’s right, there was more chance of something happening to YOU in your childhood than your kid today. Mass/social media wrongfully paints a different picture about the state of crime and unfortunately most people buy it. So RELAX, NO NEED TO TAG YOUR CHILD. LET THEM LIVE AND GROW UP LIKE A CHILD WITHOUT YOUR ANXIETIES HAMPERING THEIR DEVELOPMENT!

This is a hint from Apple to create a Tile like devices but has an advantage because of iPhone. Apple would probably sell this for $69.99 plus a magnetic key ring for only $39.99 which is very reasonable price. :D

Sorry, I just don’t get it...
At the moment we have on all devices including the Watch a perfectly working ‘Find My Friends’. However, this merging seems to kill off many parts to its operation.
1. You can’t use it to find family members or friends as they are not using your Apple ID.
2. Everyone has to be on iOS 13 in order for it to work: No good for those on older devices.
3. It’s no longer available on the Watch: I often leave my iPhone at home and use the ‘Find My Friends’ App on my watch. So, how on earth can I locate them if the App is no longer available?

All in all, I see this as a big step backwards.

Exactly what I was saying. Why can’t they add this Find My app to WatchOS at least. How is that not a good idea? The one device that’s stuck to your body at all times. How great would it be to track your iPhone or Mac or whatever from your wrist when time is of the essence for lost/stolen property. How about a Bluetooth disconnect notification between watch and phone to start. It boggles my mind that this isn’t implemented yet. I’ve sent Apple several feedbacks regarding this.

Couldn’t you then login to iCloud from any computer?

Sure, that’s great... if you have nearby access to a computer which many don’t at all times. How about a Watch OS app for this?

so that's why you don't turn Bluetooth off. But for argument's sake, say, to save battery life, you turned off Bluetooth, then FindMy won't find Jack

Except that Apple could keep Bluetooth "on" in the background, even if you think it is "off".

Well, let's just say there have been some crime syndicates from East St. Louis that have set up shop on the north side of town and the police have been trying to combat it, but we have a far lower number of police per capita than the rest of the state. We have about 150,000 people, and at any given time I was told by officers that there are only 7-8 officers on patrol to respond to calls for 911. We've tried to increase taxes to pay for more police, but idiots keep voting it down. Mostly because poor and working class people don't vote in local elections and the rich people who live far away on the south side who are more easily able to vote don't care. It's driving me crazy. I'd run for office if I wasn't such an introvert. There was even a filmmaker who made a documentary on how the local police were covering up a sex trafficking ring for 20 years to protect an informant they had for drugs. Makes me sick.

At our old house, which was closer to this activity, there were all kinds of crazy people. Our neighbor would sit on her front porch with a gun threatening to "blow the heads off" people as they walked by while she jacked up on meth. We didn't even let our kids outside there. The neighborhood was fine when we moved in, but it went downhill quickly in only a few years. We moved about 5 miles away but I worry about it spreading to our area again. We were limited to where we could move because of my wife's daycare business and various neighborhood restrictions on that. In the neighborhood adjacent to ours there was a big drug bust, and only a couple miles away there was a little autistic girl who was forced to have sex with men. So you can understand why I'm not trusting. The area I'm talking about isn't that big.

If I was back in my home town I would be less concerned. I can drive around my current city for weeks without seeing police on the main roads. When I go home, I'll pass 2-3 police just in the 3-4 miles between the highway and my grandparent's house. With so few kids going outside any more, the numbers suggest that my kid is more likely to get snatched. Especially since she is a little girl and she is objectively very pretty. Even one time in our neighborhood we were on a walk. I was pushing the stroller with my son in it, and my wife was walking with me, and our daughter was up the street running way ahead of us. I see this man quickly come out of his house all of a sudden, and stand in his driveway in a way that would block her from running through. He just stood there, looking at her, started to say something, but then I notice him look over at us as we were coming around the corner, and does this sort of double take and then he runs back inside. It was super weird and creeped both my wife and myself out. It's also important to understand that my wife was sexually molested as a child, two of her cousins were sexually molested as a child, my mother was sexually molested as a child, there are various other people we know as well, and even I was exposed to graphic pornographic content as a child by an adult, which is some form of sexual abuse. So I'm not just anxious for no damn reason. The scars run deep and it has had a profound impact on our lives. Just look at YouTube and what has been going on with their algorithm recommending kids in bathing suits to people. People suddenly noticing videos of their kids getting 400,000 views and tons of creepy comments. It's sick. Our society is broken. I think a lot slips under the radar nowadays.

Should've been named 'Find'. 'Find My' sounds weird and unnecessary.

Yes it would be if it was Titanium like their credit card and could self-recharge.
You laugh, but they will...

Yeah, if only bluetooth worked properly. One major reason I have to turn bluetooth off is if one device is connected to, say, a speaker, then often, at some random point of time, another device unexpectedly overrides and connects to the speaker instead. So you turn off the bluetooth of that device to enforce the original connection. I certainly hope the engineers of Bluetooth are embarrassed about their woeful quality of work. And this coming from an electrical engineer.

The way this works makes it an absolute no brainer for Apple to release a low powered tag that can broadcast micro packets of data for years on the same coin cell battery.

I’ll get one for my dog, wallet, camera bag and other things of value.
This kind of tech was already in use in other fields. Kind of surprised Apple is the only company to think of doing this for mobile devices and computers. It's ingenious really.

I don't think you got my point. Actually there's already a rumor of a Tile like device. I laugh because I joked a about charging $40 for key ring that attached to device like they charge $1000 for monitor stand. I'm sorry if I offended you.

I don't trust this feature at all. Apple bangs on about privacy, but still has features enabled which are hardly fitting for privacy.

ie, settings> privacy> location services > system services > "Location-based Apple Ads"

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT207056

Your iPhone will send your location, including its travel speed and direction, to Apple in order to provide you with geographically relevant ads on Apple News and in the App Store.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/mozilla-wants-apple-to-change-users-iphone-advertiser-id-every-month/

Is there going to be some form of this feature to allow stores to track us when we visit even if the phone is off? Because I was pretty shocked when I discovered "Location-based Apple Ads" and how this allows you to be assigned a specific ID for your device which can be tracked by companies when you visit them and linked up to work out where you have been in terms of stores. Sure you can turn it off, but you would think it would be off by default giving Apple's stance on privacy. Even if Apple has created "Location-based Apple Ads" to give us more privacy than we would have had before, it is still an ID which can be tracked at the end of the day, why do we need one at all?

I would really like Apple to put in writing specifically that no advertisers or any form of the device ID will be available to any "select partners". Because just imagine how much that would be worth for advertisers to be able to track your device even when it is off. I understand it should not be possible based on how the feature works, but.........

Apple at WWDC unveiled a new "Find My" app, which is available across its Mac and iOS platforms. Find My on iOS replaces Find My Friends and Find My iPhone, and on Mac, it introduces a native "Find" app for the first time as an alternative to using iCloud on the web.

Find My has a useful feature that's designed to let you locate your lost devices even when they're not connected to WiFi or a cellular network by leveraging nearby Bluetooth devices. Your lost iPhone, iPad, or Mac will be able to communicate via Bluetooth with any nearby Apple device, relaying its location right back to you.

findmyformac-800x467.jpg

Apple described the feature on stage on Monday, but today provided additional details to WIRED for those interested in an overview of just how it works.

Apple designed the Find My feature with privacy in mind. It uses an encryption system that prevents people from abusing it for tracking purposes, making your personal location unavailable to people aiming to intercept your device's Bluetooth signal and from Apple itself.

Apple's encryption solution requires "Find My" users to have at least two Apple devices. As relayed by Apple to WIRED, each device emits a constantly changing public key that nearby Apple devices use to encrypt and upload your geolocation data. Only other Apple devices that you own (and that are linked to your Apple ID and protected with two-step authentication) are able to decrypt those locations.

Because only your own devices can decrypt the encrypted location signal that's being sent from a lost device, no one, not even Apple, can intercept it and locate you or your devices.

Apple says that "Find My" uses just tiny bits of data piggybacked on existing network traffic so there's no impact on device battery life, data usage, or privacy. WIRED has a specific set of steps on how Find My works, from setup to what happens when a device is lost, which is worth checking out for those interested.

Basically, when a device you own goes missing, it's going to broadcast the aforementioned public key, which can be picked up by any other Apple device owned by anyone. The Find My app is available in iOS 13, iPadOS, and macOS Catalina right now, but it's not going to be a fully functional system until these software updates are installed on millions of devices around the world.

This will not reduce crime it will only add to apples bottom end
you get an item stolen sure you can track it
who is going to recover it?
it will be sold before you can find it
if not it will be tossed away most likely damaged before the tossing
so no one wins only apple

This is going to superbly frustrate law enforcers who think they have the right to invade individual citizens' privacy because they have power and good intensions.
To my experience with police force they don’t give a **** about your stolen/lost device even if it is gone in a burglary. They will ignore you just like before. In this way at least you have a last chance to say goodbye to your device while looking at the map.
[doublepost=1560026958][/doublepost]
Buy a second iOS device so you can track the first one if it gets lost or stolen. Yeah, that makes sense.
You still have iCloud if you have only one device
[doublepost=1560027007][/doublepost]
Unless you own a MacBook and an iPhone. And both are stolen.
Than you have iCloud

With regards to availability on the watch, wait and see. We're at Beta 1.

With regards requiring the same AppleID. I haven't see any info from anybody that says this is a requirement. Again, we're at Beta 1, wait and see.

And in needing to upgrade to iOS 13, yes I consider this a fair trade off. iOS 13 supports four year old devices. If you have anything this old you're due for an upgrade. We lose functionality all the time if we don't upgrade, services change or are switched off all the time. I don't agree that development should be held back to ensure backwards compatibility for what is always a dwindling population, the four year cut off is reasonable.

Or you can choose not to upgrade.

Your cry that old hardware de damned is a bit out there. Apple has been making and selling iPhone 6 phones and selling them through authorized carriers for years. They are a lower cost iPhone for people who can’t afford the $1300+ lastest x variation. My carrier was selling iPhone 6 phones two months ago, so to say someone who has one is using a 4 year old phone is just wrong. It could be a 2 month old phone and bam..bad choice by Apple they cut you off. I get they can’t upgrade and if you’re buying a phone at $0 down and $10 per month for two year plus cost of cell fees, you’d expect at least that all the features and services that came standard with the phone continues to work. Or are Apple so prejudice/racist that only the well off deserve to be treated fairly?

The whole reason people bought Apple products was they just worked and kept on working. I know many who have original MacBook Air or 1st gen MacBook Pro that just work. Sure they don’t have the latest patches but still can do Adobe CS4 photoshop and illustrator, play music from iTunes and write letters in AppleWorks. All really old stuff but still works for the users need.

From what I see in the requirements for new “find my” is you will need two devices so having just an iPhone with iOS 13 is not enough. And as an iPhone is ties to a single Apple ID even having two family members with an iPhone each wond do you anything either. Now your going to have to buy a Mac of some sort.. and at a cost of 2-3x what a windows pc costs it’s looking like Apple only wants the rich to be able to use their products. Perhaps Tim Cooke is prejudice/racist after all.

This comment immensely devalues your post. But I’ll reply anyway.

You try to imply that if you made a poor decision to buy four year old hardware expecting it to be supported for a further four to five years with the release of iOS 13 it becomes useless. Well... surprise... it doesn’t. You just have to run it on iOS 12.

None of this is new. Apple normally cuts off support for older models when they release updates.

Regarding "Find My", when a family member would misplace their phone, I used to be able to sign in to their account in Find My iPhone to locate it, but I don't see that capability now. Do they have to share their location now that Find My Friends is combined with Find My iPhone?

Parents are going to worry about their children, that’s the way it is and that’s the way it should be. While the threat may be exaggerated, it’s not a bad idea for parents to remain vigilant within reason. For some parents, knowing where their underage children are gives them some peace of mind.

Not to mention the ability to ping your child’s phone when they won’t answer because their phone is on silent. The new “find my” app sucks.

My father in law routinely misplaced his iPhone, and I could ping it from my phone to find it. I don't see a way to do that, now.

Suppose I'm at a rock concert holding up my iPhone like a flashlight, and so are a thousand people around me. How many other phones will my phone collect keys from? If it's not all of them, what determines which ones? How often will that data be sent to Apple, and how often as I move around on the way out to the parking lot? Will the tracking information from the entire audience constitute millions of packets, all collected within a few hours using the concert?

How long will Apple keep a location information packet on its server? How many total packets will be on Apple's servers once we're all using Find My? Billions? Trillions?

I suspect that Apple isn't revealing these details, but it sure makes you wonder how they handled all of the implementation details.
