I think it's buggy. I get up to get water and go to the bathroom multiple times in the night but don't always get credit. Also, the exercise ring is complete BS. I've gone on 5 mile hikes and/or walks and not closed the exercise ring.
I think the exercise ring only registers if you are doing heavy enough exertion for it to consider it a work-out.

i.e., casual walking, etc. will not trigger it, but a proper workout where your pulse rate is elevated "enough" will do so.

Normal walking counts for move ring, but not as a "work-out" (exercise ring) unless you're pretty brisk about it and get your pulse up. i.e., distance doesn't count, level of exertion does.

I have gotten credit for standing while sitting and gesticulating wildly while talking.

I’m in a lot of back to back video conference calls during the day where I can’t just stand up halfway but it’s easy to trigger the stand credit: all you have to do is move your watch arm back and forth (as if you are brisk walking) for 30-60 seconds. I can easily close my stand ring even if I’m sitting in calls for 8 hours a day.

It's actually enough just to let your arm hang for a minute, maybe with the occasional shake.

If Workout>outdoor walk (open goal) is selected instead of relying on ‘heart rate’ to trigger it appears you get extra credit for the exercise ring.
This is what I do now since severe arthritic knee means I never walk briskly enough to trigger but I do, at least, get some credit for the walk I do.

You can't just stand. You need to also move around for at least a minute for it to qualify. Bear in mind that it's ability to detect that is piss poor on series 0 (original) and better but still not great on something like series 1. I'd imagine they're much better on newer models.

Exactly this.

I find it works very reliably if I stand and walk around for a minute or two.

I have a sit/stand desk and stand detects when I am using it standing pretty well.

As above, the whole point isn't just to be standing up but also to move a little. When standing up during the day at my desk, it definitely registers enough movement for me to get the stand ring.

Well, Mr. President. Maybe you could get one of the secret service agents to wear it, while you're "working" from the couch? :)
There's a commercial on TV where a woman puts her watch on her dog's tail. She's sitting on a park bench pretending to be resting from jogging while her dog is racking up the activity for her. Silly commercial.....

The stand reminder is only received if you’ve been sitting for the first 50 minutes of any hour. It will go off at the 50 minute mark of each hour if you’ve not stood for at least one minute during that hour.

And correct, if you wake up past noon, you can’t close your stand ring. The system isn’t flawed at all. You should be awake for 16 hours each day - plenty of time to close your 12 hour stand ring.
If I stand and move around continuously, say, from 10:50 till 11:10, will I get credit for both hours - 11 and 12? I suspect it doesn’t happen that way, which might be the right way to do, but doesn’t seem to match many of the descriptions here

It does happen that way because the Stand Goal is specifically getting someone to stand for at least 1 minute during a given hour.

Think it’s time I set it up on my  Watch lol.
