It is and the people crapping on it are for the most part Android users who were prepared to crap on anything presented.
Well it makes sense for Droids to be salty about, they have had pills and punch hole camera modules for years now and none of the OEMs ever thought of turning this huge downside to such a great feature. The most they could get was a circular battery ring around it.

It's a genius move IMO. For me, since the 14pro is taller than my 11pro I'll still have more "regular" screen real estate. And if it cuts down on those pretty large and annoying notification banners, it's a win-win.

I am surprised to see that, in my country iPhone 14 pro versions are around 300USD more expensive than 13 pro versions cost last year and iPhone 14 pro max 1TB costs whole 600USD more than in USA!. Pricing is very Dynamic.

It's neat, but I see a couple things that could be improved...

The time is now hidden when a new call comes in. Can't quickly see the time to decide if you want to take the call before your next meeting, or maybe you're expecting another call soon.

The signal bars are now hidden during a call. Can't see if poor reception could be affecting the call at a quick glance.

Work well when you are using it as a phone - flip the phone on its side and watch the clips of movies and it looks shocking.
Do you expect it to work differently than the notch for movies? I expect it to work exactly the same.

By default a movie does not reach past the bottom of the notch/island.

If you manually zoom in, then the movie will extend into the notch area. Note that when you zoom like that, parts of the top and bottom of the movie are cropped/offscreen. It's not the best way to watch a movie.

This all seems like exactly the behavior you would expect.

At least they're doing something with the cutout that is going to be there a while still. I'm curious how they'll modify this once everything is finally under the screen.
I suspect that they will keep the concept once they can put those camera and faceid elements under screen. the only difference would be that the island would not always be visible then.

There might be people criticizing Apple for this, but it is undeniable how Apple can be a creative company when they put their mind into. That is the great legacy Steve Jobs left. And the ones that don’t work for Apple, should learn and be creative in our work. As technology gets democratized and ubiquitous, the difference in this world will be make by the creative ones.

I also suspect this UI paradigm would work even better on iPadOS. Maybe iPadOS 18.
