After you did the swap did you log into your online ATT account?
Cause both our iphone dont show a lte data plan they said we are now on?
In fact it show no data plan at all?

you need to call from different line

Just did mine. Easy peasy.

AND it feels SO much lighter than the 4S.

I called the 800# and selected option 2 as suggested. The rep was very helpful and had no issues with my request. She understood fully what I was doing and even asked if my wife knew I was using her precious upgrade for my own phone! :)

The process was pretty much painless. Was done in less than 10 minutes.

ONE HITCH that kinda bothered me was when I powered the phone up and went through the initial setup (after the rep told me to) I got to the point where it said "Please confirm that the number is the phone you are upgrading, if it is not you must call AT&T to change the phone." or something to that effect. I was VERY hesitant to move forward because it showed my wife's number there but I did it anyway. When the phone came back up after a reset it had my number in it and my wife's phone is still working as it should.

I ordered from Apple directly.
Used my wife's upgrade.
I am an AT&T customer.

Great job AT&T! Much better than last year. Hope this helps someone.

P.S. I DID turn my phone on but only because I plugged it in to charge. Still had no problem.

Same here, exactly.

Well, received my phone from UPS around 9:45. Called AT&T to do a cross upgrade. They told me to turn the phone on, I did. Guess what? Wrong phone number on phone. Spent maybe an hour with AT&T and Apple and Apple tells me I have to wait anywhere from 4 hours or tomorrow at the latest. WTH?!?

AT&T replaced the SIM. Still says no service. Went to Apple store and AT&T rep confirmed all is well in the system, but I have to wait for the activation server. Its now 2:25 EST and no working iPhone!

AT&T gave me a $70 toward my bill for the inconvenience, but that doesn't help me use my phone. Grrrrrrrr
:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Hilarious! No lie, just after I clicked submit on this post, the phone started working. I actually removed and re-inserted my SIM card. Maybe that helped...

I'm going to lose my unlimited plan?? Can anyone else confirm/deny this??

Nope, if you have it you can keep it. It took my ATT rep a little while to work around it. The compter wanted her to switch it, she said she kept getting an error, took her about 10 minutes to work around it.

Well, I got it done.

Upgraded my wife's 3GS phone line to iPhone 5. Then wanted to switch so that her number went to my 4S and my number to the 5. Didn't do anything to the new phone after it arrived, since I didn't want to inadvertently activate anything. I called the 800 number and worked with the guy for (according to the phone) 58 minutes. He certainly knew what I was trying to do and wanted to help.

But at one point he said I would lose the unlimited data and visual voice mail, because it wasn't compatible with the device I was swapping to. I told him that had to be wrong, I went on hold, and he came back with corrected info.

Next, he was almost finished when he determined that he couldn't change the number assigned to the 5 because of the new Nano Sim. Either he would send me new sim, or I could go to the local AT&T store for one. (He called them to make sure they were in stock, which they were.) I opted to go to the store, which I thought would be swamped, but I was actually the only one there most of the time. They were able to swap the sim cards in both the 5 and 4S and everything is copacetic.

The phone guy was a bit less than helpful, but he gave me a $100 credit for the hassle (which I didn't ask for), so I won't complain.

For my swap, AT&T removed the upgrade phone number from the nanosim but was unable to add the number I wanted to the sim for whatever reason. Now time for a trip to the AT&T store in my future for a new sim card!

Has anyone been able to do this at the apple store? I want to do an upgrade swap, but the phone line that has the upgrade is across the country. AT&T says I cannot purchase without cutting the service to that line. I tried to explain that I should be able to purchase, not activate and get a new sim with the correct number to activate without cutting off the service to the other phone but she said that will not work. Was this girl misinformed? Thanks

followed OP
AT&T CS rep was good and she already had all the info
took a bit of time on hold (15min) though

apple.com order
upgrade swap success and no issues

Currently on hold with AT&T. First hold was about 2 minutes and right now into 3 minutes. Not a long wait.

I called 611 and chose the upgrade option from the automated lady. I had to provide the IMEI and ICCID numbers which are located on the back&bottom of the iPhone 5 box.

Preordered through Apple.
32GB Black.

Oddly had LTE data when I first turned it on. Just no voice/text.

I just got the phone & am nervous about the switch. I used my sister's upgrade (I have her & her husband on my family plan & help them by paying for their lines) but she is in Memphis & it will be a hassle for her if her SIM gets hosed. I'm also on the new mobile share plan & have seen here that they can cause a bit of a problem for the agent. Waiting for my sister to get to her destination before coordinating with her.

I just finally finished my upgrade swap. The first rep I got didn't know anything so I hung up and called back. The next one treated my request like it was the most common thing... She had me read the IMEI and ICCID numbers and got me up and running in minutes.

Everything that is now listed in my original post is completely accurate.

Thanks to the MR community for working together to find the method that works best. I hope the people further west can benefit from this information when they get their new phones.

Works FLAWLESSLY.

I am on the phone with them now. This guy had no idea what I was trying to do til he called "Apple Support" on another line and just provided him the IMEI number. Waiting for him to get back to me now.

As i stated earlier, Apple purchased iphone 5 upgrade swap performed perfectly in less than 10 minutes over the phone w/ ATT.

no need to go to ATT
No need to get a new SIM
No need to do anything but call ATT with SIM and IMEI numbers.

Just hung up with the offshore guy from ATT - he wanted me to activate the phone first before he can activate it for my number - makes no sense.

Hung up and calling again.

great info! Thank you guys. I'll be doing this when I get home from work. Does anyone know when the AT&T customer service closes? I want to be able to do this tonight.

With the amount of people who have stated, me being one, that you shouldn't turn the phone on, just call and give them imei and sim numbers first, how are people still screwing this up?

Glad it worked out for you. However you need to give credit to the great Care Rep that was able to perform the correct steps for "you". :D

Did you bother to read the posts above and below you post concerning issues with the Care reps not correctly processing the request, killed Naon-SIMs, killed donor line SIMs leaving the donor without a working phone.

Dave

I got an e-mail from Apple saying there was a problem with my activation, and gave me a number to call along with a reference number. I called and told them my phone is active. They updated their records, then after hanging up I got another email saying the phone has been successfully activated, and listing the phone number that I used for upgrade as the new number, not the number I switched it too.

Anyone else get this e-mail?

I called & got a Spanish lady who at first didn't seem too sure about what to do but then I told myself to chill & she did great. She had no problem with the mobile share plan & got the sim correctly moved to my line & my sister's phone never blinked. Her name was Karen & she did a fantastic job.

Yeah... it's amazing that there were so many problems.

All those problems could've been avoided with:

a) reps who know how to do their jobs (they get trained, there's no excuse)
b) people with iPhones who know how to follow instructions (don't turn on the phone until the swap has been made)

Aside from weird outliers, most problems could've been avoided.

:)

Wow, after all this discussion I'm confused--- do we or do we not turn on the phone when they tell us to?

Only if they peform the update of the IMEI and the ICCID on their side first. Ask the rep to verify that they have updated the IMEI / ICCID information!

Some reps are still using the default AT&T device steps and asking you to turn on the device first before they make the required account changes on their end.

However, there is still some risk that the Care rep did not proper complete the upgrade swap steps. Just look back through the thread.
