Thought I was going to have some problems but it ended up working.

The guy I talked to said that it had to be activated on the line that the upgrade was ordered for then you would have to go to the AT&T store to have them swap the SIMs. I told him it's not what it was advising on their site. He said this was coming from Apple directly. He said he could try but couldn't promise that it would work. We went through the process and I started up the phone. When it showed the number that it was upgrading it was still my wife's number. I said it didn't work and he said I would have to go to the store. I turned the phone off and got ready to head to the store. Before I left I decided to go through and activate the phone under my wife's number it still showed hers but after it was activated I noticed my phone didn't have service. I went into the setting and it showed my phone number. I feel bad for being a little short with the guy on the phone now.

The only problem now is that my phone does have some scuffs around the band. I'll wait a bit before I try to get it replaced.

Confirmed Apple order for ATT account

Ordered IP5 on wifes number. Called ATT before turning phone on and they switched the IEMI, turned IP5 on and is now under my number. NP at all

AT&T hosed me on cross upgrade -- NOTE

Called the number, entered 2 and told the polite lady that I wanted activate my new iPhone5 on another line -- she said no problem.

Told her that I had not turned on phone and had SIM and IMEI numbers ready.

She said to turn on phone  -- I said are you sure? She said absolutely.

Turned it on and as directed went through a few screens -- presto it activated on the wrong line!

She said it wasn't supposed to do that and she was sorry but she could send me a new SIM or I could go the the store. WTF!

We have three hour lines at our ATT store so I went to plan B. ;)

Took my iPhone4s sim out, cut it to resize it as a nano sim -- plugged it and WOW I had my original number up an running.

Moral of the story: Don't let them talk you into turning the phone on before reassigning numbers on their end. :)

Here's what I did. My mom has a Florida account I have a Nebraska account. I'm using her upgrades. I had the rep first "park" the iPhone on my moms account WITHOUT activating the sim which would deactivate her current sim. This also made me sign the 2 year agreement etc. I then had a nano sim made for my Nebraska account number I wanted to use. I had AT&T take the original sim out and put my sim in that he just made. I got home, connected to wifi and activated it throu the on iPhone menu. Works perfect no problems.

A lot of helpful info. One question though, has anyone done the upgrade swap with another line OUTSIDE of your family plan? Does it work the same? Thanks.

Read my post above you. That's exactly what I did. My mom and I have two separate accounts with different are codes separated by 1500 miles.

Thanks, but looks like you got it done at the store which I am sure works fine. I am more interested in doing this over the phone without store visit.

Call customer service and this is the process

So here is the "official" response:

ATT: ok i am going to let you see what i am reading. it explains it better than i can. Its still so new to us.
ATT : Verify the customer has the pre-installed SIM in the new device.**
ATT: Verify the customer has powered on the device, but has not completed the device activation process (unbrick).*
ATT: Power iPhone on.*
ATT: After choosing desired network, iPhone processes the initial activation. This may take up to one minute.*
ATT: iPhone asks to confirm the wireless number used to upgrade the device.*
ATT: If the customer wants to activate on a separate wireless number, select No.
ATT: Selecting Yes deactivates the wireless number the order was placed on and results in a burnt SIM.*
ATT: Enter the wireless number the customer wishes the iPhone to be activated on and proceed with the activation process.*
ATT: Perform an ICCID and IMEI change on the line that is receiving the iPhone.*
ATT: Add a qualifying iPhone data plan.*
ATT: Swapping of Unlimited Data plans is not allowed. Customers must select from currently available plans.*
ATT: Following departmental guidelines, attempt a test call.*
ATT: *If the customer had already removed the SIM card that was pre-installed with the new device and attempted to activate with a different SIM, follow the process below:
ATT: Advise the customer that they must obtain a new SIM to complete the activation.*
ATT: Place the new SIM into the iPhone and complete the activation steps listed above.*
ATT: The customer may need an additional SIM to process.*
ATT: Technically i wasnt supposed to do that so please do not put that out in public

Take it for what it's worth. I removed the rep's name from the chat to protect him since he was so nice.

what different line? I can't call from the phone I am replacing or use Skype?

Don't call from the line you are upgrading from.

----------

I'm going to lose my unlimited plan?? Can anyone else confirm/deny this??

I had unlimited on my existing line and I still have it.

I upgraded a different line on my account and swapped the upgrade to my unlimited data plan no problem. You are only swapping the equipment, right? You're not swapping plans.

A little off topic but ATT has been spot on today.

After successfully and easily doing the upgrade swap for me, they also exchanged the messed up Invisishield I bought from them for a new one, no questions asked.

Anyone find any Power Support screen protectors though? My Apple store said they wouldn't have any for another week most likely.

Mine was just like this except that my rep believed cross upgrade would work. He provisioned my line and my wife's line correctly but I still saw my wife's phone number when trying to activate the iPhone. So I just turned off my old phone and waited for the sim to deactivate and I went ahead activated the iPhone even though it still listed my wife's number. I went and checked the phone number in settings and voila, it listed my number.

I just called and hung up on my first rep.

Keep in mind she said the connection was clear and she could hear me OK.

Her: What is the phone number you're calling about?
Me: 401-555-2525 (fictional number so I don't give you goobers my real number) :p
Her: Ok 401-550-2552
Me: No... 401-555-2525
Her: Yea its not bringing it up.. 401-550-2552

This went back and forth another 6-7 times then I just hung up... If she can't get my phone number right then I am pretty sure she'll lose me on the IMEI and ICCID number... UGH!

------

Rep #2: You need two new SIM cards, one for the line you want the number on and one for line who's upgrade you're using. That is how cross upgrades work... (I protest) That's how it works sir.

Strike II

AT&T's help on the upgrade swap for me was seamless and perfectly executed.

I read the IMEI and SIM card numbers to the rep from the 5 box.

I watched as my 4G and AT&T went away from my 4S and I knew that he had done the swap correctly.

After all was done, I confirmed that it was ok to turn the 5 on.

They took off the data plan I selected during purchase of the 5.

Confirmed I still had my unlimited data on my existing line now that the upgrade was moved to my line.

Once the 5 was powered on, I was able to put in my wifi password and then the rest was very easy and no blips at all.

NOTE: I saw no mention of the other phone number (the one it was upgraded with) and my phone is now restoring from backup.

I called my cell number from the house phone and it rang on my new 5. :D

My experience with AT&T has been perfect. I have absolutely zero complaints. They did what they were supposed to do all the way around.

I ordered two phones - white and black, one for wife and one for me. Do I need to call AT&T if we want to swap each others or can I simply swap the sims?

If I don't have another line I am able to call from (no home phone) can I just use Skype? Has anyone tried this? Thanks for all the responses, it's going to help a lot, especially since I'm guessing UPS won't deliver until 8pm tonight.

Should be able to swap the sims, since they're both nano sims.

If Skype doesn't work, maybe try google voice.

First time i got through (I'm on a land line mind you) ATT rep's connection was so bad I had to hang up. OHHHH THE IRONY.

Second call, rep tells me that Nano Sim is "bricked" and i have to take it to the store to activate. (Purchase made through Apple.com)

And now when I call that number I'm getting a "main menu" instead of hearing the "oh, you recently upgraded" message.

I took the time and went to the att store around 11am (wasn't busy and got help right away)

The rep did the swap to my main line and put the dummy phone on my added new line.

20 mins later and all was done

thanks to all that helped in this thread

Did you use a line that didn't have data to do the upgrade then performed the upgrade swap and had them completely remove the data? I am looking to upgrade a line that doesn't currently have data and wanted to do the upgrade swap but I want to make sure I can have the data removed from that line before proceeding.
