i dont know about op, but i dont have codes for bd i have bought. and movies from itunes cant be played on android or other players without removing drm protection at first. also the reason why i dont buy anything from itunes. of course that is not a problem if you only use apple devices and ever going to try anything else.

A lot of DVD/BDs come with iTunes and UV codes for the same movie. so you really aren't locked into iTunes. So instead of buying directly from iTunes...redeem the codes instead.

Unfortunately those mp4's don't have DTS/DTS-HD/True-HD audio (the main reason why I don't purchase any movies from iTunes). I'd rather buy the bluray and rip it to my media server. No DRM's, can play anywhere, and better audio.

And they probably never will have higher quality audio. Most people watch TV without any additional audio equipment. So having higher audio quality, that would increase the streaming bandwidth, doesn't make sense. People like you are unfortunately, the minority in this market.

Sorry for the bump - but did everything I rip play via a 5.1 system?

With all the conversions I'm not sure if it plays via 5.1. Thanks!

Never got a notification for this response, however I'm not talking about streaming over the internet. I'm talking about local viewing (i.e. watching on your LAN). Obviously streaming over the net the audio would be transcoded to a lower quality, but having DTS/DTS-HD locally is ideal.

OP, the only thing I would do is get yourself another hard drive that is the same size or bigger and make sure to back up all of the files you rip. You do not want to have to do this all over again. Heck I have a primary backup and then another backup of the backup that I update ever six months. I have the HD at an offsite location. I have spent an inordinate amount of time to rip all of my music and now I am starting on the DVD's and Blu-Rays and I do not want to have to do it all over again.

So back up your media!!!!

Thanks for the heads up!

Can anyone confirm (or deny) that the settings I use will allow 5.1 playback?

If your receiver says dolby digital and not dolby pro logic you are getting 5.1

Though trueHD/DTS-HD is better. ;) I just upgraded to Atmos/DTS X, what a difference!

Thanks.

I just got a Sonos 5.1 system (Playbar/2 Play One's/Sub) so I don't have a Receiver, but my Sony TV shows if audio is Dolby Digital (if it's not, nothing appears) and I see Dolby Digital while playing the movies through my ATV4 so it's safe to assume I am? :)

Thank you very much for this! This app is pretty darn cool and useful to boot!

No prob. Yea I use that thing all the time to check the file size vs bit rate after an encode. I usually like to keep the vid bit rate around 3-4Mbps. Useful little tool.

Why not just pass-thru AC3? I wouldn't even bother AAC.
It's a good idea to keep the AAC stereo track for compatibility reasons. The stock Videos app on iPhone and iPad, as well as iTunes cannot decode AC3, so you won't get any sound without the AAC track. ATV3 and before can only pass through AC3, so again no sound if you e.g. connect the ATV to a TV that cannot decode AC3. The ATV4 is in fact the only current Apple device that can natively decode AC3 using the stock apps.

Of course, if you are ready to completely ditch the Apple stock apps and always use something like Infuse, this is not a concern.

Gotcha. Yea I don't use any apple apps for video. Plex/VLC are my players. Mainly Plex since it handles DTS audio (to watch locally) and can stream from anywhere (which will transcode), or VLC if I store locally on my iPhone. Thanks for the info

That's the "stock" settings that Handbrake chooses.

So, with the settings I chose am I getting DD 5.1 when playing through my ATV4?

Thanks. I have the Sony 930c. I'm pretty sure it is capable of multi channel output.

Can you confirm?

This TV appears to have stereo speakers. Not sure why you'd expect it to have multi-channel audio?

EDIT: Just saw Simon's post above. If you have a 5.1 speaker system connected to the TV via optical out, it may work. You'll have to check whether the TV supports DD5.1 passthrough via optical (not all TVs do). There should be a setting for that. You'll also have to set the ATV4 to Dolby Digital in the audio settings (as opposed to "Best Quality", which outputs PCM audio which cannot pass over an optical cable in multi-channel configurations).

If you can connect the speaker system to the TV via HDMI ARC, DD 5.1 will definitely work with the configuration above. "Best Quality" may also work in this case, since HDMI is capable of carrying 5.1 PCM (although not all TVs support it over ARC).

Just wanted to ask (seems like a smart group) and I apologize to the op to be a little off topic. I have recently started using Plex. What would you use to strip the DRM from my iTunes purchased movies so they can be played through Plex.
