Interesting. AT&T's baseline contract (this is the contract that everybody signs, not just the contract signed by iPhone users) specifically states:

I find it interesting because the iPhone is the only type of hardware mentioned by name in the contract for which there is a specific requirement saying that they will automatically sign you up for a data plan even if you don't ask for one.

Anyone have any suggestions on how long we should wait before canceling the data plan? My family has 5 phones and we're signing up for a 2 yr contract with at&t on monday. I'm planning on getting 5 iphones for all of us and selling 3 of them. I'll keep the data plans on the 2 iphones that i'm keeping but I want to cancel the data plans on the other 3 and sell them on ebay.

Is it really this easy?

Hmm, there is not mention of ETF. I though when you downgrade your service you end up with ETF, don't you?

If you didn't have to pay for ETF of $175 this is a great way to get a iPhone for my needs!

I don't think that WIX BLOCK works for the iphone data plan. I emailed them to block text messages and they sent me this in response:

Dear Mr. xxx,

Thank you for contacting the new AT&T regarding blocking text messaging.

Mr. xxx, I will be happy to remove the text message feature from

Did you guys have to cancel it before the 30 days. Also did you guys end up paying any ETF?

I cancelled the data plan after 2 months of use. I'm not sure about TXT messages b/c I currently have them on my phone. The WIX block regarding the pay per use internet can be blocked. I currently do not have the data plan and Safari won't open any websites when I am not on Wifi.

Hope this helps.

Anyone try this recently?

My brother has come on to ATT and is waiting for the Mac World to see if there are anouncements regarding 32GB Iphone... but he's going to get rid of the data plan.

Also I've talked to ATT reps and you can have the data removed if you don't want it. Its a feature they can't force it on you. You loose visual voicemail but can check voicemail the way everyone else does on a non iphone.

If anyone follows my step at the beginning of the thread the IPHONE 3G data plan can be removed. I'm using my IPHONE 3g without data plan since end of August 2008.

All you have to do is:
Take you IPHONE 3G sim put it in another phone and call ATT CSR.
Tell them you sold your iphone or gifted it to someone.
Tell them since you no longer are using the IPHONE 3g you'd like to cancel the data plan and put a block on your pay per use internet
Then just pop your sim back in the IPHONE after the call.

My response: So what? Who cares if Apple knows you're using an iPhone?

If they verbally agree to terminate your data contract, that's it... The data contract is terminated, and you'll start paying for data on a per-kilobyte basis. They cannot force you to enter into a new data contract without acquiring your consent to do so, no matter what IMEI they subsequently detect.

Next, if they verbally agree to add the WIX BLOCK to your account... that's it. The data service is blocked, and they contractually cannot turn it back on without receiving your consent to do so, no matter what IMEI they subsequently detect.

Having done all that, is the customer going to lose access to visual voicemail too?

I think your wrong on the first part, because when you sign the contract it says "If we know you have iphone, we'll charge you data." (in different words, derr).

Also with the second bit couldn't they charge you data but still honor you choice to block it? So you'd be paying $30 for nothing...sleazy of them but not technically against the rules.

You can lie about going back to your old iPhone - you just need a 1st gens IMEI. Then you would have a $20 plan with your 3G.

Thanks for that idea.

If it's a 3G, it can't be done. "Recently" isn't going to change anything when AT&T hasn't changed anything.

Do you mean the original no-data thing can't be done on the 3G or the buying a bunch and selling some?

I don't think that WIX BLOCK works for the iphone data plan. I emailed them to block text messages and they sent me this in response:

<snipped BS from AT&T>

That rep was full of it.

I've the MEdiaNet and SMS messages are independent of one another. I've have SMS blocked on AT&T plans before without having to remove MEdiaNet. Barring a recent policy change (within the last 6 months), she's flat-out wrong.

Is there anyway to get the old iphone data plan for 20 bucks a month with a 3g iphone. I hardly use 3G. Use wifi most of the time and when im not im on the road using edge. Thanks

Call up and say you switched, give them an IMEI of an original iphone.

After reading this entire thread isn't it just easy to just accept that if you have an iPhone 3G that you'd end up paying for data eventually. Yeah I hate paying $30 a month for data and I do love the EDGE/3G service to check up on stocks/weather/msn but eventually if u call them up and give them some BS story about the phone and request WIX bans etc that they'd figure out to just add data to the plan and bill you again.

It reminds me of those people that end up skipping taxes or driving without valid tags its only a matter of time before you get caught.

i've had the data plan off for 4+ months and it was easy for me to get the data plan off rather than pay $30/month...

if people want to keep the data plan please keep it ... don't criticize on why i took it off. my reason was simple... I like to save $30 and i enjoy using the phone without the data.

the steps are there if you want to use them ...if not don't post things to make yourself feel better about paying $$ for something you may not want but are lazy enough to get it canceled.

As long as you dont get caught and back charged or anything then its cool.

Isn't the point of the iphone 3g the data packages and the apps and the 3g network? I'm all for saving money, but why would you buy the iphone and sign a two-year contract and not get the data package and take advantage of it?

I am neutral on at&t, but the point of the iphone and the 3g network is the data. What's the point of having the iphone if you won't take full advantage of it? I mean I like to show my iphone to my friends, but it's even cooler to show them how fast the data network is and how you can quickly download apps and do apps and stuff and check email quickly.

Plus the 3g network will grow slowly but surely to more places.

So you guys are saying this can be done? Has anyone been off the data plan for months, besides OP of course :) Because I've been wanting one and I really have no need for the data plan because my college has WIFI everywhere.

good for you! Have fun with that hard saved $30

Ah, but this is a savings that keeps on giving.

So far, if the OP has had data turned off since August, it would be a savings of $150.

The OP claimed to have used data for the first 2 months, so that would leave 22 months in the overall contract with data turned off. Over the remainder of the contract, that would be a savings of $660.

If I knew would always have pervasive WiFi everywhere I went on a regular basis, to make up for the lack of cellular data without sacrificing smartphone features, I would be perfectly willing to keep that extra money in my pocket.

Yeah, I noticed that and commented on it a little later on. AT&T's actions will speak louder than their words, but speaking as a Canadian, thankfully I don't have to bend over for AT&T's rules.

(I get to bend over for Roger's rules instead.)

FWIW i've been using the original iphone without a data plan for about 18 months now. I pay like $35 for my bill (including FAN &taxes/fees)

the day i got my iphone i told Rogers To block my 3G and under no circumstances unless i phone them specificaly asking them should they unblock my 3G. i have not payed for it at all and i bought on sept 27,2008

i have been tempted to get it though but 30$ for 1 gig seems like crap to me

Ok guys

i have a 8GB 2G iPhone been using since Xmas 07. Bought it off craigslist, jailbroke it with iBrikr. (Have since updated and jailbroke with quikpwn) Anyway, I never called At&t to tell them about my change. I did call and have all data blocked on my phone. I have 400 txts for $6.00. (Works like any other phone) On the "My Account" page, it shows my device as an iPhone. So obviously they are able to track my IMEI number and can tell what it is. I have never received ANY EMAILS OR TEXTS mentioning incompatible data plan or that I must add one or ANYTHING to that effect. Hope that helps some people.

Now, Hopefully someone can help me!!!!

I have 521 mg left. :( I need an upgrade for more memory. 7.1 GB is music! I am wanting to upgrade to the 3G phone just because it has more memory. If I could upgrade to a 16GB 2G iPhone I would.

So it seems that a few people have a 3G iPhone and are able to use it without a data plan??.... For those guys, have you received any texts or emails about you needing to have one or any warnings at all?... Are the rest of the features fine without the 3G connection? And connecting to WiFi is not an issue, as long as its available?....

The person(s) who cancelled it all mention removing the original 3G iPhones sim card and putting it in another phone, then calling to cancel the plan and yada yada. My question is simply can I buy a 3G phone, jailbrake it, put my sim card (NON iPhone specific sim) in and basically be where I am now with my 8GB 2G phone performance/featurewise?... Since I currently have NO DATA plan right now, I wouldnt have to cancel anything. It should be just plug and play so 2 speak.... Right?... Anyone.....)

I am not willing to pay $360 yearly for something I dont need/want just to be able to use an iPhone.

This is my same question basically. I have a 2G iPhone that was given to me that I jailbroke and unlocked and have used BossPrefs to turn off EDGE data, so I only receive wi-fi. I just want to know if I go into upgrade and then cancel my data plan (AT&T in-store rep said that you could do without any issues, but had to keep your service to keep from being charged the ETF), can I put my SIM card back into my 2G iPhone that I still have, sign up for the $20 2G data, then take my sim card out and put it back into the 3G iPhone and use only the EDGE network? I can somewhat handle $20/mo since it also includes 200 texts, but I can't really deal with $30/mo and no text package included. Also, I don't have 3G where I live so why would I pay the extra $10 for a service I can't use 95+% of the time?

I have only had my 2G about a month and have not received anything from AT&T saying they will add a data plan automatically, although they know I have the iPhone because it shows up in my online account.
