There is no point in owning an iPhone without a data plan.. If you need something to call people on get a free flip phone.

Why not? It would be no different than owning an Ipod Touch and a dumbphone, but with the advantage of having them as a single device. And that's exactly what I want. I get free wifi on campus (where I spend most of my time) so I have no need to pay for a data plan.
You can't bypass the data plan if you're on AT&T. If you are able to take it off for some reason then AT&T will just add it on again. But I understand why you don't want it especially if your campus has Wi-Fi throughout the campus.

i was expecting that email can work with wifi only, but it seems not to be the case.
do you know how to configure the email application to "not check for data plan" and "use wifi"?

just change email from push to fetch ...
if anyone care, once you are out of att's data plan, there's no "push" email servie anymore.😱

i tried all the steps and they canceled my internet for 2 weeks. then one day i got massage saying "did you know that for iPhone data plan is required" and they turned it back on.

Because you want an iPhone (and AT&T/Verizon require you to subscribe to internet).
