I have only had my 2G about a month and have not received anything from AT&T saying they will add a data plan automatically, although they know I have the iPhone because it shows up in my online account.

That doesn't mean you won't be caught in a sweep later. The OLAM display is more or less automatic, but there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to when they conduct TAC audits or who they do them for. You might luck out, you might not.

Can anyone confirm that this is still do-able?

I want to get my mom an iPhone because I believe she deserves an easy to use intuitive phone. However, she doesn't need internet.

I'll try to get her to try it out (the internet) for a bit, but I doubt she wants to pay $30 / month. She's not the most tech saavy, so I understand. However I want to make sure I can cancel the data plan....

OTHERWISE

I'm really screwed ><

You cant according to ATT terms, but some have done it.

STill working

I have been using my Iphone 3g this since september of '08. I have had no problems. Everything works great!

Any confirmation on whether this still works? I'd like to get the 3gs but I really can't afford the data plan. Right now I'm 2 weeks into a 2-year contract (on a family plan) with the Nokia 6650. This is what I was thinking:

* Return the 6650 since I'm within 30 days.
* Put the sim from the 6650 into a GoPhone or similar (I want to keep my phone number)!
* Preorder the iphone as a new customer.
* Use the iphone for a month.
* Sell it or lose it or give it away (does it matter which???) and call AT&T to tell them I'm using the GoPhone and don't need a data plan.

I'm a little confused about whether AT&T now tracks IMEI numbers? It sounded like they didn't in the past.

I'm also confused about whether it matters after doing all of the above if I should use the sim card in my iphone from (a) my old 6650, (b) the one from the GoPhone with my old number ported over, or (c) the one that comes with the iphone.

So you can just cancel your data plan after 30 days and ask them to disable data by doing the wix thing? will that disable text messaging. I'm really confused on the whole process

You can cancel the data plan after 5 minutes. The key is to have another phone's IMEI to provide to the Care rep. You can also request a WIXBlock to block all data on the line. No the WIXBlock has nothing to do with SMS Txt messaging.

The question is it really worth saving $1 per day not to have the full capablities of the iPhone? Can't you save that $1 somewhere else in your daily life?

Note that without an iPhone data plan you will not have Visual Voicemail, since it uses the iPhone data plan to send the voicemail messages to the iPhone.

No it will not add a data plan by just putting her SIM into your iPhone.

The bad news is that if she has the default Pay Per Use (PPU) on her line, with her SIM in your iPhone then she will get a very big bill for accidental data usage. Just make sure that she as a WIXBlock on her line before you do the SIM swap.

Just get the WIXBlock now and you will be all set for Dec. When you call, just ask the Care Rep to block all data on your mother's line so she does not accidentally get charged for any data. The AT&T term is a WIXBlock but you can just ask them to block "all" data and you will be set.

thank u so much that helps so much no she can actually have a good phone right now she has a crappy sony ericson

I have been using the phone this way for 4 days now and it works great. Wifi's, calls, voicemail...My only question is do we know for sure if att tracks imei #'s. I saw on another forum that some people have been getting text messages from att saying if they don't add an iphone data plan on the phone att will add it for them. My thought was this was caused by not changing the imei # associated with the account but I'm not sure. I did change my imei # because I thought that would take care of this. It would be great to know for sure if att is monitoring the use of all iphone imei #'s on the network and enforcing this.

How did you change your IMEI number?

If anyone follows my step at the beginning of the thread the IPHONE 3G data plan can be removed. I'm using my IPHONE 3g without data plan since end of August 2008.

All you have to do is:
Take you IPHONE 3G sim put it in another phone and call ATT CSR.
Tell them you sold your iphone or gifted it to someone.
Tell them since you no longer are using the IPHONE 3g you'd like to cancel the data plan and put a block on your pay per use internet
Then just pop your sim back in the IPHONE after the call.

What about if I just buy one on ebay. I'm sure I can do the same thing. I think I would call them from my old phone and say my brother tries to download ring tones and I want the data plan cut off everyone phone then put the sim from my old phone into my ebay iphone

When I first bought the iPhone 3G I never signed up for a data plan (Rogers network) I was even told to call the *611 number and to have them block my 3G access so I don't accidentaly use there data and cost me lots of money for acfeature I necer wanted in the first place.

The if the person saving $30 a month wants voice mail they'll have to pay, I think $15 a month for it. I'm not sure about the exact rate, but it is around there.

BTW I had an issue with my 2G in May, I called AT&T to turn off the Data, which they did, got the iPhone working again and called to have the Data turned back on. Well they did not provision it properly and just put me on the MediaNet data plan, so no visual voice mail, in fact I had no voice mail for about 2.5 weeks before I noticed a problem. According to AT&T I did not request the iPhone data plan to be put back on, even though I specifically ask and said iPhone at least 5 times during that one conversation. Buncha morons at AT&T.

Iphone 3GS unlocked

If i buy a new Iphone 3Gs what should i do to aviod having to sign up for a data plan? Will having someone with data plan already upgrade to the 3GS be the best idea or does anyone have any other suggestions? please and thank you

Iphone and windows

if i were to jailbreak a new iphone 3gs can i still do it with windows 7 because windows 7 worked with hacking into the first iphone

yes u can

well here is what u do

call them and tell them that ur switching phones, give a really good exuse. my favorite is that your "son" is grounded so ur taking his phone away. give them the IMEI if they ask for it, its no big deal. then ask them to put a WAP block on it (internet block). After its done, restart the iphone. also see notes

Some Notes:

You will know that the plan workied when you see the 3G sign off the status bar of your iphone. The ATT system will regognize it as a iphone, but it wont add on the data plan unless you take off the WAP block.

If the 3G symbol pops up, panic. call them, switch phones, and do the whole thing again

You cant recieve picture messages, even through wifi, because this requires data, but you can send regular texts.

Its hard to add a text plan, do it over the phone, its a hard task.

Hi
I am still confused about some items.
Can I cancel the data plan the instant I get home from the AT&T dealer ?
Also do I get charged for wix blocking or canceling the data plan?
Thnks for the answers!!

You cancel after your first month. No, you do not get charged for the data block. If you block data, mms will not work, just SMS.

I have a 2G iPhone that has been out of use for a couple of months now. Recently I broke the display on my new phone (a crappy, cheaper one) and have since added the data block.

When I move my sim card into my old iPhone a screen appears telling me to connect it to the computer. Will this make me add a data plan or just verify a working sim?
