I just bought a new Micro-sim from ebay for 9 bucks since it didn't work with my already-activated microsim

Problem with friend's 2G

Okay, I'm still very much a noob. I have my friend's 2g iphone, which she erased all info on. I put my brand new SIM in, and connected to iTunes. I am now at the part of the activation where I need to select a monthly plan. I was expecting to see a choice of data plan (the $20 one discussed here) separate from the phone plan, but instead there is no break-down between phone service and data. I have only three choices, which are basically differences in minutes. The first one is $59.99, and comes with:

450 minutes
Unlimited Data (email and web)
Visual voicemail
SMS Text Messages: 200
Night and Weekend Minutes: 5000
Rollover Minutes
Unlimited Mobile to mobile

Is this the plan I want? Is the $20 Unlimited data plan just included in this?

Any help?
Thanks!
Goph

seems to be

that seems to be the one, 39$ for the 450 min play, and essentially 20$ for the data and 200 SMS.

You can use your buddies iPhone 2g, but you have to wait until you have an ATT account. LOL Once you have the iPhone 4 or 3GS in your hands go ahead and do this. :)

I am borrowing a 2g from a gal at work but she doesnt know how to back up her phone. Will she lose any data with me using her phone? Can I back it up on my itunes and then restore it?

I also have two iphone 4s on the 2gb plan with family voice and text. Can I use the same 2g phone for both phones?

Call me crazy, but I don't think this discussion should be in a public forum. The greater attention people call to this, the sooner AT&T will notice and correct this problem.

Um, if this discussion wasn't in a public forum, many people who would like to use this loophole wouldn't be aware of it. Congratulations to you on finding out via some sort of non-"public forum", but some of us just aren't so fortunate.

Great News

Do I need to call in to do it that way?

I give them IMEI # and it will immediately text me that I need a 3G plan and upgrade me?

Will this method interrupt his service at all?

I got two iphones a week ago and then learned of this a few days ago. I just decided to call up the ATT department where you cancel service, and "very nicely" told them how much we love att and the iphones but the 2 gb was not enough. I told them we dont need a ton more data but would definitely go over by a gig or two every month and cant afford it. I said the Droids at Verizon have unlimited data and unfortunately we have to cancel and go to them. I said I bought the iphone so I would not have to always be tied to a wifi hotspot and that I could use it anywhere and not be afraid to go over. I was very kind and civil. I didnt even ask if they could give me the unlimited. I just told them my wife and I were sad to have to leave. He said "hold on let me see what I can do for you. I cant guarantee anything but hold on" I said" thank you very much sir, I would be happy to give you guys the extra $5 per line to stay at att." He had me on hold for 10 minutes and when he came back on the line he said he put me and my wife on the unlimited plan for $30 on each line and it was effective immediately. Yahoo and Praise the Lord. I prayed God would allow that for me. Thank God. Being nice and honest paid off. Now I dont have to mess with all this stuff, and Im grandfathered in he said.

am i good?

Okay so I just went to the AT&T store to pick up a new SIM card that I will plan to cut up and use on my iPhone 4 after I do the whole loophole thing with it on my friend's 2G iPhone.

Anyways, when I went to the store today, the person helping me asked me what IMEI number my current phone was ( I am temporarily using my Nokia phone right now since I have not yet acquired the 2G iPhone yet). They inputted the Nokia's IMEI number into the system, and when the guy handed me the SIM card and receipt, the receipt lists the changed SIM and changed IMEI number, in which he used my Nokia's IMEI number. Was that a mistake?

From my knowledge wasn't he supposed to just hand me the SIM card so I can activate it through the 2G, or did he already activate the card for me? The SIM card has not yet been put into any phone yet, and it's still attached to its plastic card. Am I good to go, or did I just screw myself over? Thanks for any replies!

You should have been able to just pick up a blank card, but it sounds like he activated it for you on the Nokia. Either way, you should still be able to put the SIM in the 2G and activate the 2G with it.

Okay I managed to get AT&T to add the 2G $20 data plan w/ 200 texts onto my line. Now, I am trying to get to AT&T's website page that lets you choose which type of data plan you want. If anyone knows how to get to that page on their website, please let me know how. Thanks

I got my unlimited by calling in to ATT and giving them the IMEI of a 2g, and asking them to switch it "for the month," then hung up and just used my phone like normal, 2 hours late I got the text for unlimited internet.

That said, the call with ATT took about 35 minutes, most of it on hold.

We have 3 more iPhone 4's that need unlimited minutes, and for those I'm just taking the SIM's out, putting them in a dumb phone. Going to the website, selecting unlimited dumb phone data on all 3 lines.

Then I'll just pop the SIM's back into the iPhone 4's, and voila, unlimited data.

that should work, right?

i stuck my 2G activated SIM card into my iPhone 4 about 12 hours ago, and until now, I still haven't received any text messages from AT&T stating that my data is changed to the $30 3G unlimited plan. However, there is the 3G logo next to the AT&T on my iPhone 4, so I guess it's already running on 3G. But on AT&T's website it says that I still have the old 2G data plan on my line. Should I be worried???

I believe the 2G plan only gives you Edge on the iphone 2g because that's all it's capable of. I had 3G the moment I swapped the card back into my iPhone 4. You should be good. Just wait for the texts.

Back again. I have an ATT microSIM in my 2G iphone, activated on the $20 unlimited plan. Next week I am receiving a brand new, factory unlocked, Canadian IP4, never activated. I am worried that I need to activate the IP4 via iTunes, and that when I put the 2G's microSIM in the IP4, iTunes is going to ask me to select a plan. Is this a valid concern?

So far in reading this thread, the folks who are doing this are using already activated IP4's. In order to do the trick, as I understand it, I have to simply put the microSIM in an already activated IP4, and ATT will by default switch my plan and grandfather me. But what if I have to activate the IP4 first, with my 2G plan microSIM? Will ATT then pop up on iTunes and require me to select a new plan?

Or, since it is a factory unlocked phone, will it just activate and not take me to any ATT screens in iTunes (even though it will be an ATT SIM)?

Thanks!

I believe downloading hacktivation on cydia on your iP4 will solve your problem.

Alright! Thanks to the OP and all the patient folks who gave me advice! I put my 2G microSIM in my IP4 and connected to iTunes this morning. Got the "congratulations your iPhone is unlocked" message and it activated. Less than two hours later, I received the ATT automatic text messages, letting me know I was moved to an appropriate plan. Logged on to ATT account and I've got the unlimited data plan!

Thanks!

Very interested in this loophole. I have a friend that has a 2G iPhone and I already have a iPhone 4 with a $15 Data Plan. Will it work if I put my MicroSim on his 2G iPhone and then pass that MicroSim to the iPhone 4 or does it have to be a new unactivated MicroSim?

I followed the instructions but when I connect to iTunes I get a message that says: "The SIM Card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported."
Has this happened to anyone else?

I already did this and it still works 09/03/2010

Unfortunately im trying to do it for my wifes phone and im getting an error message telling me to call customer service.

I did this and used a friend's old 2G iphone. I was able to activate the phone with my own micro-sim from my IP4 and chose the $20 unlimited option. Once done with the activation I put the sim back into my IP4 and I got a text message saying that I need to choose an appropriate data plan. I went online to confirm the $30 unlimited plan but it says that I need to contact customer service via chat or through 611. Anyone else get this message and have any issues when getting the unlimited option activated?

On my manage services section is shows that I have the $30 unlimited option. Will this all work itself out in the next bill cycle? It says I'm prorated right now.

Did you call c/s? My guess is if your OLAM says $30 unlimited data, you're fine.

Nope I haven't called C/S, just looked at my account online. Under manage features it shows the $30 unlimited data option chosen. I will wait till next week when my bill cycle starts again and see what it says. For now I will let things be and hope they work themselves out.

does it show 2 unlimited iphone data plans? one says its been auto added to your account the other just says unlimited iphone data plan?
