I did the 2G method twice. First time did not stick. The 2G iPhone would not activate right away and then it would not automatically switch to $30 unlimited.

I then went with the dumbphone method (see other thread), which did work. A few weeks later, I logged onto OLAM and noticed I was switched back to the $20 iPhone plan, even though I never did use the iPhone 2G again after that first time. I called c/s and she couldn't switch me to the unlimited plan either, so she switched me back to the 2gig plan. She didn't say anything about the activation date.

Then I went and picked up a new SIM card and a new micro-SIM card. Put the new SIM card in the 2G and this time iTunes activated the 2G, but would not activate the micr-sim on the IP4. I called c/s and she activated my IP4 and switched me to the unlimited plan herself.

I still don't understand why I suddenly got switched from the $30 plan back to the $30 plan.

When trying to manually add "Unlimited data for iPhone," I get the following at Step 3:

F931: The feature you are trying to add is not compatible with the phone/device on record in the billing system.....

Please kick in :(

Don't really post, just a reader but i thought i would just post. So I borrowed my friends iphone in order to attempt getting unlimited data. I tried to activate a new SIM through itunes, but kept getting the cancelled message.

This morning I called customer service to have them manually do it. The first one didnt even no what the 2g iphone was and kept the 2GB data plan (gave her sim # and imei). She told me i'd be fine once i connect my phone to itunes. WRONG. Itunes kept giving me the activation prompt.

Got into work and called customer service once again. They took off the data plan and she said she had no iphone data plan option for me in the system so she just gave me the basic unlimited plan for 15 dollars. I connected my iphone to itunes this time AT&T appeared on the corner with the "E" (on the phone that is). I tried activating through Itunes again and the unlimited data for my iphone went through.

Used the phone for a couple hours calls, txt, and internet. Cut the sim to the micro size and iphone 4 accepted it. Now im waiting for OLAM to tell me it will be giving me the correct data plan. Hopefully this works. =)

I didn't switch sims I cut the new one I had in my 2g. Was a piece of cake after watching 3 different YouTube videos. When I put the sim into my ip4 it took about an hour and 45 min for the changes to show on my account.

Aw man... I think it's cause im a new line and on Premier...
Everything is slower for me.

I think the reason why it's not going through for me is because the IMEI is not registering on AT&T's system. It won't let me change my features because my SIM is not in my 2g.

How long does it take to get the text messages that say your data plan isnt compatible and theyre gonna upgrade you to the $30 unlimited. I put the sim back in the i4 after activating on the 2G and I haven't received any text messages. When I check *data# it says Ive used part of my 200mb plan and like 1 meg of my unlimited plan.

Nevermind I just got them today at 5am so it took about 14 hours. If anyone is thinking about doing it the whole process is pretty easy. The original instructions is basically all you have to do. I did it in one day and no need to call customer service or go to the AT&T store.

Thank You!

Used this today on 2 new iPhone plans. Due to an error on my part, when activating in iTunes I choose to create a new account instead of selecting to switch phones, the first phone and SIM did not work Took the SIM to ATT, with no phone and was handed a replacement SIM. No problems after that, I have received all texts, and emails to let me know my plan was changed. Also checked OAM, and all discounts and UNLIMITED packages are selected. Thanks again for the thread!

Newbie here...

I am getting an iP4 in a couple weeks. I am presently a Sprint customer, and my wife is on ATT. We want to set up a family plan and I want to try to get the unlimited data using one of the loopholes. I also want to port over my Sprint number.

Apologies for the rather noobish question, but will I be able to use one of the loopholes AND port my number over at the same time? Also, will we then be able to combine our two ATT plans into a family plan?

Between the 2G loophole and the "dumbphone" loophole, should I first try the 2G loophole, and if it doesn't work, then try the dumbphone one? Or vice versa?

Thanks!
Goph

I'm not sure on your family plan question but porting your number should have nothing to do with whether this loophole will work or not. You'll port your number when you sign a new contract with AT&T. The order you try the loopholes shouldn't matter. If you have a 2G available than I would do that first since it's the fastest method and doesn't require you to call in.

Thanks--I confirmed with ATT that I can sign up my own plan then combine it later with my wife for a family plan. I was told that in order to port my old number, I have to go in to an ATT store, and they will port it to a SIM/micro SIM.

So what I should do is:

1. Bring in the old 2G iphone to a store;
2. Try to get them to let me use a micro SIM in the 2G iphone;
3. Sign a new contract, including the unlimited data plan
4. Store will port over my old number to the microSIM;
5. When new Canadian unlocked iphone 4 arrives, switch microSIM into it;
6. Combine my plan with my wife's plan in a family plan.

If they wont let me use a microSIM in the 2G iphone, I can always cut the SIM down to size for the iphone 4, right?

Thanks!

They definitely aren't going to let you use a microSIM in the 2G. Just tell them that you are buying an iPhone from a friend who lives out of town and if you can go ahead and get the microSIM to activate it rather than waiting til you're back from being out of town. Or you can buy them for cheap online. Either way works. As long as you have a new SIM to activate the iPhone 4 and they don't activate it themselves at AT&T, you should be fine.

Wait a sec...now I'm a bit confused. Apologies.

So I should NOT have ATT activate the SIM (regardless of whether it is a regular SIM or microSIM) in the old 2G iphone? Wouldn't they simply give me the $20 unlimited data plan, since that is all that is available? Let's say I stroll into an ATT store and do as you say, and walk out with a microSIM in hand. It would be unactivated and not have a contract or phone number associated with it?

Then I go home, tape the microSIM in the 2G iphone, and then what? Go back to the store and ask them to port over my old Sprint number and sign me up for the $20 2G unlimited data plan? The key here is I want to port over my old number, so I can't activate it online, I don't believe.

Apologies for being so thick.

I would:

1) Go to AT&T store and activate a 2G with unlimited $20 data (you might have to get a new SIM card).
2) Also ask them for a micro-sim, unactivated. They were charging $15 for it last time I went there.
3) Use your 2G iPhone until your iPhone 4 arrives. Then put the new micro-SIM in the iPhone 4 and activate it with iTunes. Enter thephone # that you were using with the 2G iPhone in the iTunes activation screen.

When you port the phone number is up to you. It has nothing to do with which SIM card you use.

Yeah, I don't see them activating your 2G with a microsim. From past threads I read of people claiming AT&T will only sell you the microsim if they activate it in the store. Not sure if that's true but I bought a new microsim off Ebay ($9) that was a regular sim size with a punch out for microsim. That made it easy because I just punched it out after activating it in the 2G.

This is what I suggest as well. Activate the 2G and port the number first. Worry about the loophole later. I've never activated an iPhone 4 online, but will it ask you to pick a data plan for it?

Thanks, techiegirl. I'm too new a member of the forum to PM you, so:

Basically, do I really need both a SIM and a microSIM? I will activate the 2G with a SIM and port my number to it. Then when the ip4 arrives, can't I simply cut down the SIM to microSIM dimensions and go on my merry way with the ip4?

Thx,
Goph

Call me crazy, but I don't think this discussion should be in a public forum. The greater attention people call to this, the sooner AT&T will notice and correct this problem.

I think the cleanest way is to get a new micro-sim card, but that's just me.

I helped a friend with this a few weeks ago. This friend has never had a smart phone but was interested in the iPhone 4. I took an iPhone 2G, her dumbphone SIM and activated the 2G through iTunes. I selected the unlimited $20 data plan. A few minutes later, she went to the Apple store, purchased the iPhone 4 and activated the iPhone 4 right at the store, selecting the unlimited $30 data plan.

OK, final question:

I have a friend who is STILL using a 2G iphone. Can I use her handset to activate a 2G SIM, then give her back the iphone so she can continue to use it with her SIM?

If your like me, 2GB of data won't do each month but AT&T doesn't give you any other options. What if I told you there is a way to get unlimited data, whether you have a new account or an old account? Well there is and it's simple! This works and is great....

Here is what you need (See Picture Below):
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 2g
- micro SIM card from iPhone 4
- tape (I used electrical tape)

1. Take the micro SIM card out of your iPhone 4.
2. Take the SIM card out of your iPhone 2g.
3. Tape the micro SIM card into the iPhone 2g SIM tray, leaving 1/8" between the bottom and the left of the sim tray. Make sure you do not cover up any metal with the tape. And make sure the micro SIM card is facing the same direction the regular SIM card would be facing. (See Picture Below)
4. Place the SIM tray into the iPhone 2g. Activate it, as it will ask you to do.
5. When activating select the Unlimited option (for $20).
6. When activated, take the sim card out of the iPhone 2g and place it back into the iPhone 4.
7. ENJOY UNLIMITED DATA!

Thats how exactly I did it. I activated a 2g with a regular sim and then cut it with scissors to fit into the ip4.
