You're right, but there are practical reasons for her getting a Mac. I could fix any problems she has with it, but if she has problems with windows I'm much less well versed. I also just want her to have a well made computer that works and isn't so buggy and prone to break.

The only reasons I think anyone ever would need a Windows computer as opposed to a Mac is if they are a gamer, or if they use professional applications that are not available on a Mac. But people that use a computer to surf the web mostly, which is what she primarily does on her computer, I don't see why they wouldn't want to use a Mac. I guess I'm biased though since I've been using Macs since I was 12 years old.

BTW: love your quote, "In the end, you might either have to get a fangirl or can only shag your Mac."

i think you are over estimating how easy it is to break a pc. unless your girlfriend is into downloading like hardcore porn or something like that, you're probably not going to have to many problems.

and microsoft security essentials is the only antivirus i use and it keeps my win 7 working just fine.

and getting a mac just because you do nothing but surf the web is probably the worst reason to get a mac. mac and pc surf the internet about the same. macs arent as magical as steve would have you believe.

My wife didn't have a choice in the matter as our MBP is our primary unit (and now she prefers using OSX but doesn't mind switching back when needs be). However, girlfriends generally are not as patient. Buy her an MBP and she'll treat it like crap because she never wanted one in the first place. I'd drop it (not the MBP though)... its not healthy.

think of a role reversal. what if your mac died and she was trying to convert you to PC?

anyway, two solutions:

1. who cares? not everyone is going to get a mac. in fact, according to Apple's market share, 90% of people aren't going to get a mac.

2. buy her one yourself!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

If she doesn't want a Mac, don't pressure her into getting one. There's nothing wron with her using a PC. You said she's used yours a bit but still prefers her PC. If it meets her needs, just let her be. I personally use a PC as well. You can happily coexist with different OSs. :p

Don't force it. Have faith in your ways. Correct her when she's wrong about Macs, but don't press the issue. Trying to persuade her might end up just further entrenching her loyalty Windows. People tend to turtle up and get more defensive if you ask them to change their beliefs.

In the end, they all end up converting naturally when exposed to Mac'ness long enough. Even the most stalwart PC users (outside of hardcore gamers) I've known eventually succumb to the charm of the Apple.

Something may happen. Her PC gets old and clunky and no amount of reformatting can fix it. Gets destroyed by a virus. Hardware failures. Maybe your Mac saves the day when these things happen. It might take a while, but it's an inevitability.

you guys need to learn a few tricks.
just like in a bar, the less interested you seem to be in them, the more interested their gonna be in you. (unless your hiding in the corner being geeky of course...)

Have you checked her motherboard and peripheral specs to make sure they can be supported on Mac OSX? You'll want to look into hackintoshing to start with. Transferring files will be a bitch. You'll discover a lot of stuff you didn't know was there, and the original source of the documents may complain in transferring some of them. I'd also keep it away from actual Macs for a while, because you'll probably get accused of admiring their curves.

Worst part is, if it still doesn't do something you want it to. Just live with it. Otherwise, you're in for a bag of hurt.

1: Don't force her into buying anything, let her get what she wants, however you may be able to pursuade her with facts and see where it goes from there.

2: Ensure her that you can right click, on most Apple Mice you just simply click to the right side of the mouse to trigger it, and on the trackpad with 2 fingers, and their are several mice out there that will allow right click for desk use.

3. Let her know that Windows can be installed on the Machine alongside the Mac OS, so if she doesn't prefer the Mac OS she can go back to Windows if she wants.

4. Mention the battery life, most Pros nowadays have a estimated 7 hours of battery life and that most laptops on the Windows end she may only squeeze about 3 if lucky.

but all in all, don't force it down her throat, a Mac may simply not be for her, but you can also offer the idea of letting her take yours for a spin for awhile, and then she can make her decision from there.

While I will say OS X does better power management, many Windows laptops easily top 3 hours. A lot of the ULV's hit 7-8 real hours.

My girlfriend currently has a 3 year old sony laptop in which the trackpad click isn't working, the battery is dead, and in general its buggy and slow. She wants to get a new laptop computer and I have told her numerous times that a Macbook Pro would be the perfect laptop. Yet, she is morally opposed to buying a Mac for some reason, and loves Windows. The only reasons she could articulate to me why she doesn't want a Mac is no right click, and the way you close windows is different. I've told her how stable and bug free Macs are, and how easy to use, and how well designed and well constructed, yet she won't listen. I even told her she could load windows on it if she wanted.

Anyone have any tips on how I could convince her to go with the macbook pro, which I think is far superior to any PC laptops out there?

why do you need to convert her, maybe a mac is not for her, jeez

Some Macfans are very strict and only let their kids marry inside the cult. He may have very strict parents. Therefore he needs to "convert" her before they can get serious.

Thanks. My point was that you have to respect the other person and show that you care about their preferences. For her, starting a new way to use a computer might be a nightmare. Actually, if her three years old computer is slow, you might impress her with doing some basic maintenance on her laptop, like clearing out registries, caches, doing disc fragmentation and even a clean reinstall, if you can save her settings and documents. That will make her life happier if you do it right and it will show her that you care for her.

Relationships make life worth living. Consumer products and choices shouldn't ruin them. If you have the laptop that you like, you are luckier than many others. Just relax, give her space, independence and enjoy that you are young and have somebody.

The reason my girlfriend won't buy a Mac are for the following reasons.

1. The affordable 13 inch Macbook Pro is way too small.
2. The 17 inch is way too expensive for a computer.

But if I bought her one, she'd happily take it. So it's all about the money.

So try buy her one :)

But don't tear your hair out when she puts Windows on a 15" i5 MBP and starts using it in the same way that she would with a PC that costs 60% less.
