You really trust these people not to have figured out how to do that on a tablet as well?

It has nothing to do with trust, it just is not technically possible, unless your going to claim that the government has a secret mole inside Apple that has placed a back door into IOS that allows then to take control of your ipad.

You are VERY wrong.

Care to share your proof?

Yeah, the government has never written software to impact hardware at all.

And companies never go along with the feds by choice or even when they are forced.

at which point, if your concern is government surveillance from stuff embedded by the manufacturer, someone watching you through your ipad camera is among the least of your worries...

Disconnect your landline phone, disable the microphones on your cellphone and ipad, cover up your Kinect camera, remove/disable any security cameras you own, etc.

Report: NSA spying on virtual worlds, online games

Articles have already come out showing the NSA can tap into the camera on phones/computers/tablets.

Several different platforms. Topic here is iPads. I'd love to see specific, relevant citations to back up the broad general claims.

Several solutions provided already for those concerned.

I wonder how many of those concerned with this actively use social media...

Sounds like you have no issue with this stuff, and that's fine. I'm not happy with it. I do cover all cameras, and I will not buy a xbox with the connect. I was going to the xbox 1, but I'm going to not due to the creepiness of the connect. I don't carry my cell phone in places that are not public, and I don't own a land line.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I have no issue with such stuff. Having worked in the IT field for multiple decades I have a reasonably decent understanding of what is/isn't realistically likely/possible with or without manufacturer collusion. So I don't live in fear of someone watching me through some hidden bug in my home or hacking into my computer to decrypt my phone backups.

Part of it is because I assume anything sent out over the air or onto the Internet is interceptible by a sufficiently interested party, and I am circumspect in such matters (front page of the newspaper principle). Part of it is that my personal life is just not likely to be interesting to some NSA spook or weirdo, but also probably because I don't do anything I'd be afraid of someone finding out about.

I control what I can (balanced against quality of life/enjoyment) and refuse to live in fear of things I cannot control. I'm also a realist about the probabilities involved and don't get wound up over things I consider very low probability.

The sanest post in this thread.

If people are so worried about the government spying on them to the point that they are accessing the camera on their iPad (because I'm sure the govt. got millions of data farms to store the millions and trillions of hours of video feed from everybody's phones computers etc) then I personally believe that is delusional thinking and perhaps the government should be spying on such people.

Now that is just my personal opinion. Everybody has the right to act the way they want.

I don't understand how people could see this as a bigger threat compared to the constant data mining that is so obviously happening with Social Media.

What makes you think these companies haven't volunteered or been forced into cooperating with the government thugs?

I can opt out of social media by not taking part in it. I cannot opt out of the government taking my contacts, cell phone data, Internet traffic, or what ever else they are taking.

The way I see it is that I have nothing to hide and I am not doing anything wrong or illegal. If someone did want to spy on me (they never would as in this world I literally am a nobody), then they will find nothing and will be bored in less than 5 minutes. That being said, I enjoy my gadgets and the life I live and need not waste it on being paranoid.

Kind of like what my father always told me: if you have enough value to entice others (may they be criminals or any sort of interested party), then you need to take precaution. Otherwise, no one would bother wasting their time. I.E. why would a thief rob a guy who has maybe $30k in his bank and not someone who has probably ten times the amount.

Please cite the specific examples you have in mind that leads you to claim this.

I am betting it has already been done. We are not finding out what the NSA has just started doing, we are reading about what they have been doing for years!

I have no proof but if I were to bet. . . . . .:p

Everybody will cheer the NSA and send a tweet to them requesting the exploit if techblogs report it as "NSA has developed a jailbreak for iOS 7" :D

This comment suggest you didn't understand my post. Maybe they have, maybe they haven't. They could also have broken into my house and planted bugs all over. Anyone monitoring me secretly is going to be very bored.

A very small piece of electrical tape ought to do the trick...

I almost never say never. If it's been done with Macbooks, it can -- or will -- be done with ipads.

And finally, THIS should be required reading for absolutely every citizen. If you haven't read 1984 in a while, do it again. It's much scarier now than it ever was the first time you read it.

And don't forget to watch (or rewatch) The Matrix for similar reasons, especially these days. ;)

If you cover the webcam with tape, Big Brother will put you on a "to investigate" list. Just put on a wig and fake mustash and pretend you've got nothing to hide.

Wait, wait!! I forgot my tin foil hat. Let me get that before I join in the conversation!!
