There's a very easy way to create your own ringtones in iTunes.

Step by Step Procedures to Create Free Ringtone on iTunes:
1. Launch iTunes and pick a song you want to convert to ringtone

2. Right-click on the song and click “Get Info” to view the song properties

3. Select “Options” tab. Check and fill in the “Start time” and “Stop time” to extract the portion of song you want to create as ringtone. Ensure the length is not longer than 30 seconds. Otherwise, iTunes will not recognize it as a ringtone. When you are ready, click “OK” to confirm.

4. Again, right-click on the song and select “Create ACC Version”. However if the choice "Create ACC Version" is not there. Go iTunes Prefs>General>Import Settings and select Create AAC Encoder.

5. iTunes then automatically extracts the portion of song you have instructed in the previous step. The new song file is just 30-sec in length. That’s the song you work on from step 6 and onwards.

6. Next, right-click on the song and select “Show in Finder”. This will launch Finder and locate the song file you just created. Or you can drag it out of itunes to the folder you want. Now you'll have two copies of the created song but the extra copy will be taken care of in step 9.

7. Rename the file extension from “.m4a” to “.m4r”.

8. Next, go back to iTunes. Right-click on the song you have created and select “Delete”.

9. Click “Remove” to confirm the removal and then click “Keep File” when you’re prompted. This instructs iTunes to remove the song (the 30 sec version) from iTunes library and keep the actual file. Unless you have dragged the song to a folder in Step 6, then you should tell iTunes to delete file. This gets rid of the other file.

10. Go back to Finder and double-click on the ringtone file (.m4r) you have just renamed. The ringtone will automatically add it to iTunes’ ringtone library. You can now sync it to iPhone using iTunes. Enjoy your new ringtone!

11. Go back into the iTunes, right click the original song, GET INFO>Options and uncheck the start and stop times so the original song will play normally in iTunes.

Thanks for posting. I just did this and added a couple of minor details to the steps above. The only ones that could be important are for steps 4 and 11. I threw this info into a quick Ringtones Created in iTunes 10 MacRumors Guide

You can now sync it to iPhone using iTunes

how i do this??

I forget if you have a Mac or not. After you have created a ringtone or have a ringtone in iTunes, if you have a Mac, simply plug your iphone into the Mac (using the iphones/USB connector), iTunes will launch and you will be given options to sync stuff between the iTunes on your Mac and iTunes on you iphone. I can't tell you the exact choices for this without doing it again, but I did it recently and there was a choice to select the ringtones I wanted to synch up.

My question is if you can do the above online without a direct connection? For example, I have a ringtone sitting on my desktop Mac iTunes. But when I try to sync up my iphone 4S to iTunes over the cloud/online/no direct connection, I see no way to synch up ringtones... I launch iTunes on the iphone, try to update or whatever it is technically called and while I can see my apps in iTunes, I can't see music or tones sitting on my desktop Mac... Ideas?

What are the steps for iTunes on Windows? I'm not sure if you do the above in Windows, iTunes will auto launch and the steps are the same? Who knows... I try to avoid Windows for this kind of stuff.

You need to set in iTunes that you want to manually add music yourself instead of syncing automatically. Click on your iPhone icon in iTunes and on the right side at the very bottom it will show the option to manually add music. Just note that this will delete any music you have in your phone, but from that point on you can just drag and drop the music you like.

My goal is to sync music and ringtones between my desktop version of iTunes and my iPhone iTunes. I don't want a blanket sync, but want to pick what music and ringtones are placed onto the phone. I assume this can be done without the devices being physically connected? I've looked at iTunes on both my Mac and on my iPhone, including under Settings on my iPhone and don't see an "iPhone icon" in iTunes anywhere. Could you clarify?
Thanks!

Edit: I'd like to clarify my hardware. I've got a PPC G5 I am using as a desktop and I'm using a MBP, an ipad2, and an iPhone4S. Most of the stuff I've been doing with iTunes has been on the G5. All of the apps I've installed on the iPad appear on my G5. Today I cranked up iTunes on my MBP and neither the apps nor the ringtones that show on iTunes on my G5 appear in iTunes on my MBP. I sense this has something to do with synching or iCloud. I did not think that PPC hardware even did iClould. So obviously there is something I'm missing on how to get iTunes to be on the same page with these different devices.

If both computers sit on the same network is there a way to transfer iTunes songs/tones from one to the other without dealing with iCloud? Thanks again. :):)

Jailbreaking has nothing to do with being able to make ringtones.

See this, for other tries at explaining to you what to do:

I don't know the exact answer but I'm sure there is one. I see others have been responding and I have not looked through all the replies but my impression is that you either do a blanket sync between your computer and your phone (auto) or you can manually pick what you want to move from your computer to your phone.

When I recently connected my phone to my computer, within iTunes I was able to selectively move a new ringtone from my computer to my iPHone, but being new to the iPhone myself, I'm a novice for a lot of this..

What kind of a computer and phone are you using?

For making ringtones, see this MacRumors iTunes Ringtone Guide.

If you need screenshots see this SimonBlog.com article but still read the MacRumors guide.

I know how to make the ringtones. What I'm trying to figure out is the best method to get ringtones from my PPC G5 to my iPhone if that requires a physical hookup or can be done strictly via iTunes.

How many step by steps does he need? He keeps asking for step by step, I've asked him to tell us exactly what he's doing step by step, but he just ignores that and asks why his tunes are deleted. Obviously, he's not following the steps. Heck, he's even been given pictures what to do!

I suggest someone suggest an app that does this automatically. /thread.

This has nothing to do with being new; it’s about following directions. BTW, it would help if you didn’t have typos, since it makes it even harder to tell what you’re trying to write here. Are you from the U.S.?

Are you talking about the songs on your iPhone being deleted after you sync? Or is it on the computer? If it’s on the iPhone, then I know what’s happening.

So, that explains it. You’re syncing and the songs on your iPhone are being deleted. The reason this is happening is you don’t have “Sync Music” checked under the Music tab in iTunes. You need to select all the stuff you want to sync and then not uncheck anything when you sync again.

You might want to read through some of the threads on here about syncing iTunes and the iPhone.

Here’s a pic of what I’m saying:
