Do you think Apple Silicon Macs will cost more, less, or about the same as their Intel counterparts?
The starting price for the lowest end will definitely not be lower than $1000, with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, matching the current base MacBook Air. The question is what will be the cost for 16GB RAM and 512 GB storage. Apple tends to get you with the upgrades.

One issue I have with Macs, is their support lifecycle. 5 years of software support for phone is acceptable, but I’d expect for computers to have longer support. 10 year old PCs are still useable today thanks to SSD, and it’s actually normal for people to use their computers for even longer than that.

Big Sur dropped support for 2012 Macs. That’s 8 years from release date for those 2012 Macs. The nice thing about intel Macs is that one can extend the life of their Macs for even longer using Windows as the OS. But that’s a big question mark on Apple Silicon Macs. I would really hate it if Apple used AS as a way to nudge their own customers for more frequent upgrades of their Macs. I mean do people really want to upgrade their computers as often as their phones?

I predict Apple will drop a bomb in "One More Thing" at the end
That doesn’t seem to be the current Apple style anymore. And even if Cook did it, he just doesn’t have the gravitas that Jobs had. With Jobs, he could make the “one more thing” as if it was really a surprise. On Cook’s keynote, everything he said and his tone seems overly flat and scripted without genuine enthusiasm nor excitement. The “one more thing” will feel just like a regular announcement instead of a real surprise.

Now I wonder what would happen if Craig was the one doing the one more thing. He seemed to be the only exec left (since Phil is gone already) that can still show that genuine excitement instead of acting by the script. The rest of the speakers in recent keynotes were simply talking fast trying to finish their script.

Arm macs are a great way to kill the hackintoshes...

Yes, but as Apple keep 2019 Mac Pro supported, hackintosh just runs fine.

Honestly thanks to hackintosh community, their trickledown technology has helped a lot users who want keep their old Macs running and enabled feature which Apple deliberately disabled on those machine.

By the way, don't you guys feel there's really no leaks so far? Like literally no leaks like the keyboard frame, screen plane, etc from manufacturing. Usually a day before the announcement, we would see a barrage of leaks. But nothing so far for AS Macs, other than A14X benches. Interesting. Or the leakers are done after iPhones.... :D

highly doubtful. They are both virtualization packages, and to run wintel stacks you'd need emulation of the CPU. Maybe Apple will pull a rabbit out of their hat and announce that rosetta 2 will work with their hypervisor, but I wouldn't count on it (and the performance would probably be...bleh).

Windows/ARM isn't a solution if the apps are still Windows/Intel.

'Wyatt ... we know the reality. Don't mess with the fantasy, just please go with it' (Weird Science) is my response ;)

But most likely you're right, while I can dream.

AMD has a patent for a hybrid cpu design

not sure what will occur months from now but so far looks like their public aim is performance per watt, per dollar in the X86-64 realm.
There are major changes to CPU architectures coming up, Apple’s only the beginning.

That would be a major flop, which surely Apple will want to avoid.
If their low end laptops are more performance than the current high end, then nope, not a major flop. Not even a minor flop.

And a side question... would a new macbook have a lidar sensor and dual cameras?
Actually, I’d like to have an app on the MacBook that allows you to connect the iPhone wirelessly to the MacBook and 3d scan directly into it. Or control a synth with gestures :) Which just reminded me that you can already do this on the iPad’s GarageBand.

When it comes to Apple, people first and foremost are buying Phones, then iPads, by a HUGE margin. Rumors for those are worth a pretty penny. For the Mac, they sell maybe a few million a year... A rumor about the Mac won’t even get the leaker a free coffee!

New Mac Pro with Nvidia Titan RTX, please. Take Nvidia back to Macs and forget that nonsense tantrum, Apple.

Let us not forget the best part “After The Show” pro and con comments made by all of us in MacRumor forums! That is when I get the popcorn out, and maybe a beer while frantically trying to order an ARM Mac 🤣
Exactly, those are the best moments...

"Oh, nobody will buy that piece of ****"
(he buys it one week later).

"Miserable battery life, no purchase for me"
(he purchases it and purchases also a battery charger)

"people will forget about this next year"
(10 years worth of facepalm and everybody having that product later)

Won’t Catalina continue to get security updates for quite a while? I’m not that familiar with Macs.

I can confirm that Windows 10 runs perfectly fine on the entry-level PC I bought 10 years ago.

I agree I still use my 2010 13” mbp every day. I will probably get another year or so out of it before I upgrade.

Yeah, spookily quiet. Either we'll be blown away by the announcement with upgrades all round (I'm hoping for un updated iPad Pro, mini , MacBook, AppleTV & full fat HomePod) or it'll be crickets & folk predicting impending doom. Let's hope it stays quiet for another 4 hrs.

Sorry, where has Phil gone??
Phil is now a fellow. More time to spend with his family and he's pretty much retired yet still advises or interacts with the executive team.

Really he's but one of the extremely few left that's been with Apple since the golden era (IPO origin days).

PS: In the last pic 'mac_team' Ave is holding the Macintosh on his knee and the guy holding the keyboard ... yeah he's employee No. 8 !! Still with Apple today I'd say he's probably the ONLY employee of the original that STILL works with/for Apple even if an a very part time basis! Started at 16yr old!

PSS: the guy in the first pic centre for some reason reminds me so much of Ron Howard.
