Because your dad didn't get to where he is by making stupid decisions. He's trying to pass some of that wisdom on to you. Wait the 13 months, get the next iPhone after Apple has fixed their antenna issues.

While this may be true - I guarantee you he made plenty of stupid decisions along the way and learned plenty from them. I've made plenty and my kids have made plenty - life lessons in every one of them.

Is this the wisest thing for the OP to do? Certainly not. Is it the stupidest? Certainly not. I remember what it was like as a teenager wanting something so bad I was willing to work my tail off to get it.

If the OP is willing to do that (work for it and pay for it) - he'll learn in a few months when the next latest and greatest comes out that it's an endless merry-go-round of the "next best thing" we live with, and hopefully he'll learn from it.

Passing along wisdom to a teenager is like getting AT&T reception in rural Kansas ... not impossible, but damn close to it!:D

Wait, what did you say about AT&T reception in Kansas!! Crap, I'm moving there!! On the map it showed that Wichita was completely covered by AT&T towers. Was that just a lie?

Oh nevermind what I wrote OP.

If you can afford it, then do it, absolutely.

I said it in the OP..I do have a job elsewhere and I am willing to pay for ETF/iphone/and 2 years worth of service.....

Then why not just go and get one yourself, on an account in your name? If you're off to college and it's your money, then go do it. Then you pay him his ETF, and it's on him if he wants to keep paying for the extra Verizon line.

The iPhone 4 isn't worth the purchase cost and ETF.

It's only 11 months until the next iPhone is out and 6 or 7 months until AT&T loses their exclusivity.

The amount you'll have to spend on getting the iPhone 4, you might as well get someone to buy you an unlocked one from the UK.

You can usually get out of the ETF if you're moving somewhere that doesn't have service. So, put some effort into faking an electricity bill somewhere in Europe. That's how I got out of my Sprint contract early when the iPhone 3G came out.

Can we have an under 18 forum for these guys please. They can post all the daddy won't let me buy a $300 phone even though I have a paper route questions there.

True, I shouldn't have said the 6-7 months like it's fact, but Apple clearly isn't happy with AT&T seeing how the iPad 3G is an unlocked device.

We won't know until later in the year, but I really doubt Apple will keep exclusivity with AT&T.

I see more iPhones in the UK since Orange, Vodafone (and Tesco!) could start selling them. Facetime being wifi only is indicative to how poor AT&T's network must be and the fact SJ chose to not use a 3G data service while introducing the iPhone 4G made me think he has lost patience with them.

Going off to college? Are you 18? Then why don't you cancel the contract (assuming it won't cancel your parents) and then get your own contract with AT&T since you can pay for it all...

Am I missing something here?

Hold your money. It will still be there in 13 months. Hopefully, actually working.

Back on topic...
Facetime is a great parent-kid selling/wowing feature and you can play up on being away from home, etc. ;)

To the OP ...

I can sympathize, because I'm very much a "But I want it NOW!" kind of person! (My ex-boyfriend used to call me Veruca Salt.)

But it sounds like your dad is a successful guy, and he's trying to keep you from becoming a spoiled rich kid who doesn't see the value of a dollar. It sounds like he's succeeded so far -- the fact that you're planning on spending your own money and not asking him to pony up for it is great -- but he doesn't want you to waste your money on terminating a contract.

Believe me, one day -- and probably not very long from now -- you are going to SERIOUSLY wish you had that money you threw down the drain back for something way cooler or more important. (Probably it will involve college and bars, but I digress.)

The Iphone will still be around in 13 months. It will be all the more awesome for having waited for it. And you will still have your $175 or $325 or whatever :)

I would just wait for the Verizon iPhone that's rumored to come out in January of 2011. I'm a Verizon costumer too and so disappointed that I don't have an iPhone 4. My contract ends in August of 2011. So about a year for me. What I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't waste your money on ending your contract with Verizon right now when you could wait till January and get an iPhone 4 no problem. You must be patient when it comes to buying these new iPhones.

OP mentioned college - while he might be under 18 right now, also probably isn't (or won't be for long) unless the OP had a lot of skipped years.

If you are not an authorized user, you can't?

It's his dad's/parents' contract right now, not his.

Although, it also might be cheaper for him to go and just pay the monthly charge himself to his dad if he get's his own contract for the iPhone - how much does your line have to cost, OP? If it's about 10/month to your dad, you probably save more paying it off that way.

That's what I'm curious about. Is he the one on the contract? I guess he wants his line cancelled and his dad has to do it but he will pay for it... I'm waking up now and it's making more sense lol

I don't even know why my dad isn't allowing it, he's a businessman/investor/etc and earns millions of $ a year, yet he's so mad at this one issue where he doesn't even have to pay anything.

Now, high income doesn't always equal high consumer spending or such habits of some sort. For one, I happen to also be an investor and an entrepreneur who leads and manages a conglomerate holdings firm. Yet I don't go around buying a Bugatti just because I am able to afford it. Unfortunately for today's uptight "gotta-have-it" world, a want and a need are two different things. Frugality and saving are two ways to reach the millionaire status in the first place anyway, so I'm not surprised why he isn't willing to pay for the ETF.

Believe me... I may sound like a redundant and ignorant adult with a different perspective, but I've been there, urging for so many materials. These little things and choices in life matter... so treat them big! That having been said, it's understandable that the iPhone 4 is an amazing product, however overhyped it may be.

Yes, I can see why you would need that because you think your Eris is inefficient, but have patience... that is a key factor to success. Having a cell phone itself is a luxury nowadays... so consider yourself truly fortunate and wait out the period, then enjoy your new iPhone 5. ;)
