As somebody that thought I didn't need it when I had my series 3, now that I have upgraded to the series 6 it's become an essential feature for me. Wouldn't buy a watch without it at this point.

I’m trying to decided between SE and S6 as my first watch with the deciding factor pretty much being the always on display. I like to costume it for social outings and thought it be nice to have an always on display to help match it color wise but it’s so dim that you can barely see it at a distance let alone discern any color different than black and white. The only real use I could see is if you’re talking to someone and need to keep checking your time without making it too obvious.
I love the AOD! Can’t recommend it enough. I very much prefer having a device that actually looks like a watch than a black, empty rectangle on my wrist. I adore glancing at the watch and be able to read the time WITHOUT energetically turning my wrist. I adore than feature. But that’s me

I went from a S4 (without AOD) to a S6 and I am glad I did. The BO feature is nice to have but once you know you are ok you don’t tend to use it much but the AOD is worth the price difference.

Just annoying when the screen doesn’t wake up, your wrist might already be raised and screen off so you have do a wrist twist to get it to react. With the AOD you can have a quick peak - wake up delay is no issue.

Granted if you’ve never had the function you may feel you will not miss but conversely if you have it you would miss it if you stopped using it.

I’d say if you are/were a traditional watch wearer then AOD is pretty much a no brainer. Feels much more like a real watch to glance at. Also you can match watch faces/colors to bands, etc for more style and expression. I can’t imagine not having it. The watch would feel lifeless. I think it’s one of those things once you have it you can’t go back.

Exactly the same here. Never really felt strongly about the AoD until I got my S6 and now I absolutely love it. Totally worth it and very useful. I don't think I could go back to not having an AoD.

I love it. This is my first AW ever so I've only known having AOD, but I don't know how people lived without it. I love the thing. I love just glancing at the screen discreetly. I love that it looks like an actual watch even when my arm is down or resting. If you end up getting the S6 I don't think you'll ever regret it.

Makes the watch more watch-y in my opinion.
Plus, I have really gotten used to being able to quickly glance at the time with my „normal“ watches and with AOD that‘s a possibility ;-)

It works well for me. In particular for work. A quick flip of my wrist and I can tell at least how important a message is. Do I need to answer or can I simply ignore it. Saves me time every day.

When I’m at home at night I usually turn it off but the rest of the day stays on. Very useful for me, specially when doing a workout or when you can turn the wrist.

I would definitely get AOD if that is the choice. Depending on the face, it works well and is easy to see and is useful. But for me, more noticeable is the absence of "raise to wake" from my S0 and S3 watches. Both my behavior in having to flick my wrist up, and even more, my watch face flashing on and off when I was not raising it. It didn't really bother me when I had those watches, but now that I notice my watch not doing that, I realize how much better this is. With the S6, the transition from dim to on is very subtle.

Mine is mostly off, but I have a shortcut to turn it on/off if needed. I like the AOD during meetings or times when glancing is useful.

Completely agree. Now that I've had it I would never go back to an Apple Watch without it.

I couldn’t go without AOD now it’s nice to see if i do have any texts and my activity data without needing to keep looking at my watch.

hoping we see AOD on the next iphone this year which is expected.

It's not needed at all. When I want to look at my Watch to actually read what's on there I have to turn my wrist towards me anyway, so the display turns fully on each time. I think it's only good for showing others that you have the better Watch.

I have it turned on. I've barely been out in public since Covid hit. It's just myself and my good lady wife at home.

Remind me, who am I showing off to again?

I have it on because I often like to glance at the time without moving my wrist and waiting for it to light up - the same way our parents etc. have done since wristwatches first came into being.

Exactly. Watches historically haven’t only told the time when you raise your wrist. AOD brings back the behaviour of traditional watches, can’t see how that’s a useless feature or gimmick or just showing off 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't know about you but even if I have both of my hands on the table I still can't properly read how much time left is on my timer or how am I doing with the Activity rings. I have to tilt my wrist and the display turns on. Not to mention that the readability of AOD is lowered not only outside because of the reflections on the display. And if I enable private complications the display needs to turn on to show the data.

Neither of which I personally care about.

What I can do is tell the time. Which is the prime purpose.

I think you're getting too much in the weeds with this to justify your personal dislike of AOD. You don't have to like it and you don't have to use it - that's entirely your prerogative.

You do have to accept that there's people who do like it, do use it and do find it functional and that's 100% fine.

I find the AOD especially useful during workouts and while driving. Both are situations I'm in every day and in which I want to see data at a quick glance to the side. I wouldn't want to take my hands off my exercise gear or wheel to flick my watch in a certain way to make it light up. And I like that the AOD makes the Apple watch look more like a real watch.

I’m fine with AOD I’m just saying that it’s not something essential and maybe not worth the extra money. I’m glad that you like it and find it useful.
