Can you do this with a shortcut automation?
Funny you should ask that. I just got a Series 5 SS on the Best Buy deal and noticed a huge hit on battery between AOD On and Off. I have now setup 5 Shortcut Automations (2 of which will not be used until things are back to normal with Work). I have AOD turn on when I leave home or work, turn off when I arrive at home or work, and I have it turn on when I start a workout (in case it isn't on already).

I now wish there was a DND shortcut for the Apple Watch so that when I start a walking workout, it would disable DND since I like that on when I bike ride or run, but when I log a walk, I'd like notifications to still alert me.

Yep. I disabled raise to wake because I end up triggering it way too often which seems to drain the battery faster than the AoD.

I've read people say this and I just can't relate. I have AoD and raise to wake always on. I do 30-60 minutes of workouts a day. I'm not even remotely close to being out of battery when I put the watch on the charger at night.

Perhaps you don’t end up triggering it unintentionally. It seems to trigger for me every time I move my arm just a bit meaning it’s waking up dozens of times per hour.

I just purchased a Series 5 SS new from Best Buy and did a comparison already between having AoD on and off (Battery health is at 100%). With it on, my battery life would start at 100% at 7am and be at 20% around 10pm. With AoD off, 100% at 7am and be at 55% at 10pm. Right now I'm working from home and caring for a 7 month old. My days are the same always so there is little difference between these 4 days I did the comparison (2 on, 2 off). AoD was costing me more battery life

Oh I don't doubt that AoD causes more battery usage but I've never encountered an issue where I can't make it through the day. When I take it off to charge it when I go to sleep I'm never in the danger zone for battery life.

I have also just upgraded to a Series 5 SS from a Series 3. AoD seems great to me, a watch you can see the time on without raising your arm. However, coming to the end of my first day and battery down to 18% with 2 hours before bed. I am going to try a day without AoD and also one without raise to wake.

So I come back with not great news about these automations. I had never used personal automations, just home automations. I did not realize you can't have automations that trigger when you "Arrive" or "Leave" somewhere to run automatically. That makes them useless.

I admit I haven't tested it, but I seems like the shortcuts app is providing that as a trigger. It even offers a variable distance from location to be selected by dragging a circle on the map shown.

It is a trigger, but it triggers a notification to run. You don't have the "ask before running" option when using location.

Has anyone has any issues with the time lag on AOD? There is a separate thread with that issue.

basically once you wake the AOD it jumps the correct time.

I think it's fixed in the latest beta I installed it and the time updates in AOD.

So I turned off Wake on Wrist Raise and voila, 50% battery left at the end of the day. The main use of a watch is to tell you the time and AoD is great. I am so glad I upgraded form a Series 3 to 5. Glance at your watch and see the time! Using California Black.

I turn it on, I turn it off. Seem to get slightly better battery with it off, but I also don’t see it as a battery hog.
