I’m just saying that it’s not something essential and maybe not worth the extra money.

What extra money? It's standard on all newer Apple Watches.

Interesting you've gone from

It's not needed at all.

I’m fine with AOD

And is even an Apple Watch essential? You have an iPhone, is your Apple watch essential?

In most cases I'd argue it's not essential. However as customers we like what's on offer, appreciate the choices and buy accordingly.

Just let folk be happy with access to the features they have. I like AOD, my wife however does not. She doesn't object to my setting and I don't object to hers. It's why it's an optional setting.

Choice is great.

It's not on SE. Dude, your taking this way too personal. Yes, I don't need AOD at all. But if it is there already I left it enabled. I could gain some battery life if I turned it off but I would charge the Watch in the evening anyway.

I find the AOD especially useful during workouts and while driving. Both are situations I'm in every day and in which I want to see data at a quick glance to the side. I wouldn't want to take my hands off my exercise gear or wheel to flick my watch in a certain way to make it light up. And I like that the AOD makes the Apple watch look more like a real watch.
Yep, same here. During exercising and in meetings (I vaguely remember those) I can glance down and see the time.

Yes! I love having the AoD during a workout! That is super useful that I don’t have to manually wake it up to see my stats.

There are plenty of times AOD is useful. Just one example: sitting at your desk, typing, just glance down to view the time or complications such as weather conditions, temperature, calories burned, stand hours etc. Impossible to do that without AOD, short of lifting your hand up off the keyboard and making an exaggerated flip of the wrist. Same is possible while driving, without having to take your hand off the wheel. Also, sometimes if you're carrying things you physically can't flip your wrist without dropping everything, so being able to simply glance down at your wrist is helpful.

I don’t use AOD on my series 6. I guess I prefer having no on-display at all to distract me, so I turned mine off. It’s really a personal preference.

Sort of like I prefer having absolutely no lights on when I sleep, but some ppl like a little bit of light.

My opinion on AOD is that for those people living in areas that have 4 seasons, where during fall and winter you’re likely to be wearing long sleeves (shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, coats, etc.), there is zero reason to have the screen on all the time. I turn my AW5 AOD off for most of the year, only having it on during the warm months when I’m wearing short sleeved shirts. I do find that keeping it off extends the battery life quite significantly, allowing me to go a full day, through the night and into mid-day the following day before needing to re-charge vs. when it’s on and I have to recharge at the end of one day’s use.

I bought my 5 just for the AOD. For the first couple of weeks it was fun to have but later on I said to myself, what's the point of the watch face being on when I'm not looking at it, or when the watch is under my shirt sleeve, not visible at all. Since the display turns on instantly when I decide to look at it, I turned it off. The savings in battery life to me is more important than the display being on when I'm not seeing it.
I right there with ya, the battery drainage is more important factor to take into consideration when you have AOD on. I go back and forth with having it on and off.

To be honest it's worth it to me because I find the flick of wrist to wake senor a little wonky.
with AOD i can always get a view 100% of the time.

Yep. I disabled raise to wake because I end up triggering it way too often which seems to drain the battery faster than the AoD.

Has anyone has any issues with the time lag on AOD? There is a separate thread with that issue.

basically once you wake the AOD it jumps the correct time.

I had a Series 6 for about a week until I needed to return it due to a Sports Band rash. I personally didn't care for the AOD. Since I spend most of my day working at my desk with my wrist facing upwards on a keyboard, it felt like just another distracting screen in my peripheral vision. So I disabled it, but then I'm extreme and have DND on my Watch and iPhone permanently. I also have GoldenChaos on my Mac Touch Bar, which shows me all of the data others here seem to value on their AOD.

I bought an SE as a replacement and I'm much happier with the price/features balance compared to the Series 6. I don't miss any of the Series 6 features.

Turned AOD on at first, then tried it off and kept that way until I read this thread, tried it again, didn’t think it added much and was distracting at times so it’s now off again. Raise to wake works well for me and so I’ll stick with AOD off I think. Battery life does seem better with it off (not that it’s a problem either way). To each his/her own!

It might depend on how often you glance at your watch and what position you are in when you do it. I find myself doing it a lot and am often sitting. The watch face is almost always in view. I'm happy not having to move my hand to see the time.

No you don't have to wake the watch for the time to move, you just have to move the watch and the time will be shown correctly.

I'm relatively new to the watch. I decided to turn my AOD off a couple of days ago. Mostly to determine if it improved battery life significantly. Haven't tested sufficiently to determine that. I'm finding I'm not missing AOD, however. Watch comes on almost instantly when a turn my wrist to look. I could see situations where it would be an advantage but I don't think it's a must have for most folks.

I upgraded from a Series 3 to a Series 6. Throughout the work day and during workouts, I find AOD to be helpful. During off hours when I'm home, I disable it completely, as it's a distraction for others when the screen randomly gets brighter, especially during meals and when watching TV/movies. Bedtime mode was a welcome change, and I wish WatchOS provided a way to set schedules for AOD in the way you can set different bedtimes.

Can you do this with a shortcut automation?
