The iPad 10, iPad mini and iPad Air already uses that hardware component.
So Apple is doing this differentiation already.

The TouchID is still appreciated by many users, and if you're not a fan then you'll end up buying iPhone 16 or newer which is exactly the question raised from this topic... how will it be neutered :)
Does that work as well in a phone form factor though?
Sure would be a scoop if the put touchid in it.
OTOH they keep launching new Mac's with touchid. One would think faceid should be in all the premium products by now.

Although the SE4 should have a 6.1” screen which is too big for my taste, if it comes with TouchID I would consider getting one.

As for the rest of its specs, I wouldn't be surprised if it had the latest chip, more RAM, 128GB storage, and one camera.

I think they should simply take iPhone 13 (standard or mini) case with same cameras and features, put in AI capable CPU and USB-C (for future proofing) and call it a day. Sort of what they did with previous SE models. Deliberately skimping on cameras or whatever will IMO just make people get 2/3 generations old models for similar money. Especially after a year, when standard models will advance a generation, and SE won't (judging by previous models).

Tim Cook is a greedy MBA degree holding corporate scumbag who always finds a way to cut corners in order to give customers less while also raising prices. The 2022 iPhone SE was proof of that. It was exactly the same as the 2020 iPhone SE, with the exception of an A15 (instead of A13), 5G (instead of 4G), 4GB of RAM (instead of 3GB), and slightly different colors. It was a phone that went on sale in 2022 with almost all the same components as the iPhone 8 that went on sale five years earlier, in 2017.

So don't be surprised if the upcoming 2025 iPhone SE features components from a phone sold five years ago. Heck, the latest 2024 non-Pro iPhone 16 has the same USB 2.0 data transfer speed as the very first iPhone sold in 2007, which was 17 years ago! See the thread in the link below for more details on that:
Empty pots & jealous ones make the most noise.
Why so acidic?
He's just a bloke doing a job - if you don't like it; well you know, don't buy it.
Others who just want a phone that works inside Apple will.
Do you really think they care about all that tech stuff - nope - looks good, works well and its Apple;)

I wish they would put the new SE in a 5.8" form factor. I really liked the size of the 11 Pro and for me, it was the perfect physical size. But, in iPhone world, bigger seems to be better.

If rumors about the new SE being based on the iPhone 14 are correct, it should have Face ID.

While undecided about size factor, I am in the camp hoping Apple does put TouchID (an option?) on the new iPhone SE's button as that would be tempting when that future time comes to think about a new iPhone.

I think a TouchID side button would be too awkward for many users to unlock the iPhone using one hand, and a top button would require two hands.

Not if you're left-handed, or if you currently pick up and unlock your iPhone with either hand, depending on where the phone is.

As a lefty this won't be a problem for me, and like any other device with TouchID you can assign more than one finger, so no matter which hand I use to grab the device I can unlock it.

I would be disappointed if Apple really releases the iPhone SE with a notch. Its an way outdated design which got introduced with the iPhone X in 2017.
Even if the notch became smaller, that would be a 8 (!) years old design.

It'll be a notch for sure. The narrow notch design is only four years old. SE is a low-cost device and Apple wants to continue selling iPhone 15 and 16.

Besides, SE has always been at least two generations behind in form factor/chassis design. The original SE in 2016 lacked solid state Touch ID from iPhone 7 and the design language from iPhone 6. The SE2 in 2020 didn't use flat edges from iPhone 12 nor Face ID from iPhone X.

It will likely be what the rumors are saying it will be. At this point a lot of the tech it has in it has been around for long enough that it will be cheaper. I do think at a price of $430, theres a chance that Apple quits selling the iPhone 14 directly since at that point other than one extra camera, theres not much the 14 has on it.

I think what is more likely to happen since this is now the lowest common denominator phone (soon), is Apple will more rapidly drop support for phones that have under 8GB of ram, probably not the coming year's iOS but I wouldn't be surprised if 2026 iOS drops more than one generation of phones and iPads, although it still would be going with the averages Apple fully supports older phones (looking at XR/XS, 11, 12).

I much prefer the notch over the "Dynamic Island" silliness.
The notch takes up less space, also since all phones with Dynamic Island are so large you can't reach it with one hand. So it's just cumbersome to use.
