So, just to clarify: I go online on the 15th, and pay $299 for the 32GB on Apple's website. My iPhone 4 should be at my doorstep on the 24th and I activate it on my computer? If there is no extra charge for preordering, (tell me if there is) why wouldn't everyone preorder? If you get it on the same day, and don't have to wait in a line, what's the catch?
(I'm new to this)

No catch. People just like to camp or wants it ASAP at the store lol

For myself, Fedex/UPS always deliver by 11am so I'm happy with that :D

I actually am going to get the phone, but im going to be adding myself to my parents family plan - so the question is how the assignment of a phone # work? do i get to pick the area code, etc.

A friend of mine wants to order on Apple.com and pick it up in store. He doesn't rememeber his Itunes password. Will he have to use his Itunes account to log in and reserve one?

Also how will Apple.com know the status of your upgrade eligiblilty? Is it tied with your Itunes account?

Its easy for him to recover his password so really I wont even touch that cause that's an easy fix.

And yes apple is directly connected with at&t's information and will know all your plan details and upgrade eligibility on hand ready to go.

Question on in store pick-up. My understanding is if you pre order for in-store pick up they do not charge you for the phone till pick up, yet reserve an iPhone for you. Not sure if I am using the right word here but do they guarantee a phone for you at the store. I am not able to arrive till later on the release day and for them to run out prior to arrival.
Correct, if you reserve you pay when you pick up. Usually, you have to pick it up by specified time on release day

Micro Sim

How will the home orders work since 4 is operating off the micro sim. Will the micro aim come ready to go with my current phone number or will I have to go to ATT and have it activated?

Others have indicated that yes, it will come with a micro-sim. The first page of this thread someone posted a screen cap of the AT&T pop-up window that comes up when you plug in a new phone. That should answer your question. It will give you the option the first time you plug the phone into iTunes.

I was fully upgrade eligible in July 09. I bought my phone with the full discount and a contract renewal. Strangely enough, less than a year later, I'm eligible for the discount (per *639#) with the $18 upgrade fee. I have no complaints about AT&T, so I'm not desperate to go to the Big V or anyone else. I will gladly sign up for another 2 years and hope I can upgrade again to iPhone 5 next year with another discount.

Happy camper am I right now :)

I've got another line on my account that's eligible for an upgrade. If I preorder with that number, do you think I'd be able to activate my new phone with mine?

yes and no.

with any GSM phone (on AT&T) you can swap sim cards with each other whenever you want, so if you use another line on your account to get the new iPhone, when it arrives (or when you pick it up in store) the phone must be activated with the number you used the upgrade line. once it has been activated, you are free to swap sim cards.

but, with this new iPhone now using Micro-sim card, (unless you already have one) you'll have to go to an AT&T store and have them port your number into a Micro-sim and the number on the micro-sim into a regular sim card.

Last year when the iPhone 3GS released, my account was eligible for upgrade, but the other phone in my family account wasn't. So I went to the ATT store with my family member and told the rep in the store to use my account to upgrade to the 3GS and activated the 3GS on the other family's account.

It worked out fine. My account's upgrade eligibility changed (but still with 3G) and the other family account's equipment changed to 3GS.

I picked ATT store to do this because I thought only ATT store would allow it, not sure what would happen at Apple store.

I do suggest to go to ATT store to talk to the rep, it's not so hard to do.

So if a friend of mine pre-orders the Iphone with his upgrade, picks it up at the Apple store, then he can give it to me and I take it home to activate it? It's that simple? I have the 3GS now.

I don't know about what Apple Store will do. However, you can't take the iPhone with you without activating it from either Apple Store or ATT store (that's was the policy for 3GS). So if you want to try that, you need to go with your friend.

really? I thought I had read that if you buy it from the Apple store, you can walk home with it w/o them opening it. I may be mistaken.

Billing address change to work?

I just looked at my ATT account online and it appears I can change my billing address. I'd rather the phone is shipped to my office on the 24th. Does anyone know if this is possible?

That will be an option when you preorder Tuesday. It should ask you for a billing and a shipping address. I plan on doing the same thing as well.

I've talked to two different AT&T stores and they basically told me the same thing.

They can't say it will be the same as last year as expected interest is much higher.

If you pre-order on the 15th, you will be notified that you can pick it up on the 25th. You can come in on the 24th, but there is no guarantee you will get an iPhone on day 1. What I got out of it. If you want an iPhone on the 24th, it's pointless to pre-order. The only guarantee you get with a pre-order is that you will definitely get one on the 25th.

While Apple haven't officially announced how their pre-orders will be, I hope it won't go the way of AT&T stores.

Just to be sure I updated my billing address with my work address online.

Apple was insistent that it has to mail to your ATT billing address.

how would i go about changing my plan since i am pre-ordering (i am upgrading from my 3gs be mind you), i never go past even a gig of data plus i might want tethering. so if i want to how would i do that on itunes or would i have to go to AT&T's site

Most likely not, the phone will get shipped with a micro sim card already in it, and once you do the upgrade through iTunes it will transfer all of your cell information to the new sim card already in the iPhone 4.

My question about the preorders is if we choose to ship it will it take a week after launch to receive it if we do not pay rip off overnight shipping charges?

last year it was free shipping and preorders (before the cut off date) received theirs on release day.

You can change your plan on the ATT site but it usually doesn't change until the following month, now that's not to say you won't have that option in the pre-order process. I'm not waiting in line again and if it lands on my door (per apple) on the 24th why would I?

yea they're waiving my upgrade fee as well... just get up and order it on the 15th, I'm sure it's not going to sell out of pre-orders in 1 day...

Relax, if Apple has learned anything from previous launches, this one should go smoothly.

quick question, if i preorder with the instore pick up option, do i still have to make the (possibly) huge lines? or is there preference to those picking up

With my 3GS I didn't buy it on the release date (I waited a day), and the Apple employee never told me to remove my FAN discount from my account. I remember this happened when the iPhone 3G came and Apple servers crashed, the employees told everyone to call AT&T and remove the FAN discount from our account, but I was really close to the front of the line and AT&T call center was too busy, so I never removed it, (other than iTunes going really slow) I had no problem activating my iPhone.

I think your right. The FAN accounts only caused issues for the 3G release. I remember an apple website explaining this and to go to the AT&T store if you had one. Then last year, they fixed it and ANYONE could buy from an Apple store. So everyone "should" be ok this year. We will see :)

Same here I have a FAN account and had problems buying the 3g from the apple store. In the end I had to go to AT&T so I am hoping this is fixed for the iPhone 4 so I can pre-order from apple.com and have the phone on launch day :)
