HP Announces WebOS-Based TouchPad Tablet, Pre 3 and Veer Smartphones

No. Apple didn't give a 4-6 month lead on what they will be releasing concerning the iPad. The iPad was announced on January 27, 2010, by Steve Jobs at an Apple press conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

The iPad was released April 3, 2010.

That's a whopping 5 weeks.

More to the point, Apple announced a new market and within 5 weeks it was fulfilling that market.

HP is announcing an entry into this market 4-6 months ahead of time.

Meanwhile, iPad 2 will be out globally in dozens of countries and we'll all be discussing OS X 10.7 and the next iOS version.

MATHEMATICS!

3 days in January + 28 days in February + 31 days in March + 3 days in April = 65 days = over 9 weeks.

I always enjoyed webOS, its was always the hardware that sucked. I think Apple should take some cues from the touchpad. Like BETTER ***** NOTIFICATION SYSTEM. For the love of god can we get some decent notifications. Steve Jobs should be ashamed at the notifications in iOS.

Well seeing that the two guys responsible for webOS notifications which seems to be one of the best so far have left that team. One went to android and the other Apple. The work on xoom looks pretty damn good in that regard so I'll be interested to see what Apple do have in mind.

Battery life? 18bit screen? Summer?

Nice. Probably better value than RIM. But what's the battery life on the TouchPad? Also screen is only 18bit, so no IPS. Yuck. And summer? iPad 2 will be out by months.

I would like that WebOS succeeded. I like it more than Android. But it seems that they are always late to the party. Just like Nokia.

Well, obviously the design is not original (though I am a big fan of the WebOS)

Reminds of the students plagiarizing in school that couldn't be bothered to change much.

It looks like the are identical down to the millimeter, and they even used the 9.7" ipad screen.

I don't think you could end up that close, by accident.

It has a dock at the bottom of the screen! Holy innovation!

Has anyone written "competition is good" yet? My day isn't complete if I don't read that little chestnut. Such original thinking seems appropriate on a thread about this device...

Competition is good!

And although there is certainly a bunch of stuff that is incredibly similar .. there is also stuff that is very different, like the interplay between phone and tablet or the way multitasking is handled. Those things are will keep Apple on top of its game. If you want to see want happens if there is no competion in a field Apple has a product. Look at the Apple TV. The only update it got was after Google annouced its Google TV (which subsequently kind of fell short, but that is another story).

WebOS coming to HP PC's, and to me it was the biggest news of that show.

The products looked impressive. HP's move here is impressive. I'm looking for battery life and pricing on anything and not seeing it.

But HP could make some serious noise, They seem to be implementing an apple-like strategy and they have many of the same tools to work with....not all, but they even have a couple advantages, including a vastly larger PC base.

I don't know, I'm not going to jump to conclusions, but if they get devs behind it and HP offers some enticing deals to content providers......well they could do well for themselves in this new era of computing.

We will see where it goes.

What I am most interested in is how they cultivate an ecosystem compared to Apple's.....

Microsoft is on shaky ground the next decade or so IYAM. Critical times for them.

I'm sorry Apple, but this thing is slick. Please step up to the plate with iOS 5 and an iPad with more features than just a front/back camera.

The XOOM is an impressive device, but it sabotaged itself with its price point.

One of the top PC vendors is now behind Linux (or at least the webOS skinned variant) on the desktop for the consumer. It's about time. (As long as they allow somehow breaking into the command-line as well.)

Another arrow across Microsoft's bow.

Sounds like HP is finally sick of being a no-margin commodity hardware maker for the Microsoft money machine.

Really? First let's wait if this thing really makes it to the market and for what price and battery life. I don't need to by an expensive clone with less better life and no supporting eco system. Even if the iPad2 has only the 'safe' rumored additions, it will be better than this thing, and it will be available 6 month earlier than this wanna-be iPad

Do you think they will still try to use iTunes to sync content to it?

Maybe the found also a way to run iOS applications on it ... that way they could reuse their code for connecting to iTunes (and save them the trouble to come up with something on their own)

Well I guess everybody wants a piece of the mobile device cake .. and WebOS does bring some nice things to the table.

I dislike HP products in general...but this is great for competition!

iPad 2.0 better have some serious new features otherwise when the 3.0 comes out in June 2012 Apple will be in the dust.

Accident? No

There is already existing lines to make displays with this size and PPI? Why increase cost by making it slightly different? I'm sure they are working from the Apply Playbook as well, where they will 4X the amount of pixels / 2X resolution in a few generations.

FYI...this is why there are several models of the same screen size and resolutions. For example, Apple has a 27 inch and Dell has theirs. Apple did not copy Dell and Dell did not copy Apple. They just went to display makers in KR, TW and CN and ordered what was available.

Also, makes expanding the ecosystem for WebOS easier, since its a common form factor / screen format.

It's not really the Ipad 2 that needs the new features....we can be relatively certain that Apple specs will exceed or equal the Touchpads .....the intriguing details of this is another company is now interested in tight integration in a product lineup with an interesting OS.

IOW, it's iOS that is really what needs to continue to shine. Fix the problems that have been ongoing for YEARS (freakin ridiculous notifications and printer support, and WAYYYYY more integration with your iphone).

iOS 5 should come out right around the same time as this touchpad is released and it will be the key for the ipad 2 and 3.

Or they might have simply struck a deal about patent exchange, which is what usually happens these days.

Not necessarily. Device information exchange based on proximity has been around for a while. I know Sony implemented it long time ago. I am pretty sure more than one company holds a patent for same service but different execution.

OMG they totally copied

1) The bezel? Come on, everyone knows apple invented that. Figure out another way to hold it you copy cats!
2) The shape. Where's my triangular pad? Huh?
3) The row of apps at the bottom. Come on man, be original. You'd think an app launcher was a common idea or something.
4) Windows that you can swipe through. Are you serious?!
5) OS in the name. This goes without saying really.

I can't wait until Apple sues their pants off.
