Accident? No

There is already existing lines to make displays with this size and PPI? Why increase cost by making it slightly different? I'm sure they are working from the Apply Playbook as well, where they will 4X the amount of pixels / 2X resolution in a few generations.

FYI...this is why there are several models of the same screen size and resolutions. For example, Apple has a 27 inch and Dell has theirs.

The iPad screen was an Apple design, not a pre-existing part. Apple specified a customer design that suited exactly what they needed. HP is just picking up some surplus production now.

But every dimension of this tablet is an iPad clone, this was likely conscious decision to match them exactly across the board, maybe even to confuse some people.

and you know this how?

it's not like someone set up a special LCD assembly line just for apple

If you counted the hours I used each iPad app, the Kindle app would be number one by far.

With Apple making noises about banning the Kindle app unless they can get a cut of the e-books (which I doubt Amazon will do) it is nice to have a possible replacement device to consider. Don't know that I will, but it is always nice to have options.

at least HP will let amazon sell books through their website and not as an in-app purchase.

Apple hasn't changed them yet have they? Unless something has changed in the past few hours this statement is false.

Back on topic, the webos tablet doesn't look to bad. I hope Apple comes to the playing field with a better notification system especially on the main screen. That is all I am really hoping for.

I mean there's only so many ways you can make a ****ing tablet lol. Copying hardware stuff is nonsense. They all look the same. Now the OS is another story. It looks like a more evolved version of iOS, minus the apps. Still not buying one, getting iPad 2 instead because I feel as though you have to invest too much into the ecosystem to get the most out of the TouchPad. I'm not interested in the Pre 3, dislike the design.

Nice HP! I really like webOS IMO that should have been the OS used on most of the phones over Android. I think its was sleeker, enjoyed using it more.

IMO of course relax droid boys.

Putting webOS on their PC's as well....kind of dig it.

OMG they totally copied

1) The bezel? Come on, everyone knows apple invented that. Figure out another way to hold it you copy cats!
2) The shape. Where's my triangular pad? Huh?
3) The row of apps at the bottom. Come on man, be original. You'd think an app launcher was a common idea or something.
4) Windows that you can swipe through. Are you serious?!
5) OS in the name. This goes without saying really.

I can't wait until Apple sues their pants off.

Not sure if serious...?

If we start under the assumption that your average consumer's computer needs in the future will be met by these mobile class operating systems on tablets, I think we will look back at HP's decision to not let WebOS die with Palm as one of the most consequential decisions in consumer electronics.

If HP is at least successful with the tablet, and not necessarily the phones, there are some huge possible questions.

Where does that leave Microsoft in the future of operating systems?

Do we have a situation where the tablet and phone market separate? HP and Apple in the tablet world and Android OEMs and Apple in the phone world? The reason I bring this up is that I still think tablets will be bought more like computers and mp3 players rather than phones.

What happens to companies like Dell in this space?

I think we should have every reason to believe that HP will throw the entire weight of the company behind WebOS in a way that it never did with the slate last year.

Despite being kirf-ish, it still looks awesome. It's all gonna depend on price point, battery life, and what else is out at the time. Good luck, HPalm, competition is good!

Apple designed the 9.7" 1024x768 display? You've got to be joking.

They requested a certain size and got it. Now it's robbery when other companies do the same thing?

Yawwwn

WebOS is probably the best overall mobile OS on the market today. Palm lacked on the hardware side of things though until now. I'll be buying one of these when it hits market.

Why do people want to buy a product that simply is a copy of the real thing (iPad). Another me-too product that will be eclipsed in weeks by the iPad 2.....Web-OS failed......Windows 7 Mobile failed....I guess more money behind it makes it.......better? I'm all for competition, but give me something new to ooh and ahh at......Apple completely redefined the Smart Phone market and I'm supposed to be excited by an inferior product that looks and feels like Apples products?......I DON'T GET IT!!!! Do something DIFFERENT people......something WOW, get off Apple's coat tails.....these aren't me-too products, they are been-there done-that products........YAAAAAWN! At least Rubenstein saved Steve Job's Keynote presentation template, I'm surprised he didn't wear a black turtle-neck and say........" 1more thing..." What a sad joke on HP.

I have a feeling if this happened, HP would be more in this game then they are right now. They seem to be behind and well with announcing this product with such a far off date, or what seems like such a far off date, this puts them back even further.

I have not used their webos for any extended period of time but I do like the look of some of the functions and the way it displays items. Very nice.

A tablet is not just hardware, obviously, but also software. If you have not used webOS, you might not be aware of the significant differences between iOS and webOS, but they are quite different. I had a Palm Pre for a few months (webOS) and I loved the clean multitasking and the card metaphor -- iOS has nothing like this, so Palm/HP are hardly copying Apple on this. Also, the notification system on webOS runs circles around the toyish notification system of iOS -- which is the reason why I no longer use my iPhone 4 as my primary communications device and it is relegated to a mini iPad now, and I love it in that capacity. :D Heck, even the ancient, aging Blackberry OS has a superior notification system to iOS.

Bottom line: the table physically has a striking resemblance (but not identical when you see them side by side) but the tablet as a total product is anything BUT a "clone" of the iPad.

Is HP Serious? Really?

Did HP/Palm seriously just release the TouchPad with the same form factor as the iPad? Same screen? Same home button style navigation? Same thickness?! (Actually iPad is still thinner)

The summer release date is great, except for the fact that the iPad2 would probably be out well before. Like SJ said about 7" tablets, I think his term "DOA" also applies here. He is probably choking on his coffee from the laughter as we speak.

I'm getting the sense that pretty much every HP product started off on a whiteboard with an Apple product sketched on as a basis.

Seriously HP, stop being Kia/Hyundai from the early 2000s and design some new crap.

sounds like the deeper pockets was a good thing for palm.

I am not sure what to say but that is pretty bad fanboyism in that post.

That keynott background and font is fairly common to us. I have seen quite a few keynotts on things that have nothing to do with technology and that type of font on a background like that is just common to us. It is easy on the eyes and eye to read.

What is REALLY easy about it is that you can photograph it without making the presenter seem like a black blob and/or blowing out all the text on the slide...

All too true, summer is a ways off. iPad2 hits shelves in April and everyone else has to ride in the backseat for a while. Hopefully HP handles webOS well though cause again I think its rock solid. Definitely going to have a device with that at some point this year, if HP delivers which hopefully they can.

Don't you think it would be pathetic if a guy at work started dressing like you and telling your bad jokes? Thats how I view these knock-offs, I would want to be different for the sake of being differentiated.....Pathetic.
