Exactly the point. If you can't even tell with that, that's how bad the fanboys have gotten.

I think you showed pretty well with your sarcasm on why Apple fanboys are not respected because I know some people here really believe everything you posted in your sarcastic post.

Don't you think it would be pathetic if a guy at work started dressing like you and telling your bad jokes? Thats how I view these knock-offs, I would want to be different for the sake of being differentiated.....Pathetic.

But the iPad is literally no different than the iPhone albeit screen size of course.

Didn't read all of the posts.

Is there one complaining:

If it doesn't have a Retina display I am not buying?

Looks like a good copy, probably smart to wait for the next gen of this one
though!

A tablet is not just hardware, obviously, but also software. If you have not used webOS, you might not be aware of the significant differences between iOS and webOS, but they are quite different. I had a Palm Pre for a few months (webOS) and I loved the clean multitasking and the card metaphor -- iOS has nothing like this, so Palm/HP are hardly copying Apple on this. Also, the notification system on webOS runs circles around the toyish notification system of iOS -- which is the reason why I no longer use my iPhone 4 as my primary communications device and it is relegated to a mini iPad now, and I love it in that capacity. :D Heck, even the ancient, aging Blackberry OS has a superior notification system to iOS.

Bottom line: the table physically has a striking resemblance (but not identical when you see them side by side) but the tablet as a total product is anything BUT a "clone" of the iPad.

Yup, this is the bottom line: I'm not worried about what apple brings hardware-wise for the ipad 2.

iOS advancement is going to be the key here. iOS is what will either keep apple on top or let them fall behind.

HP's phone and tablet integration is something that should have been included with 4.2. I don't even need to expand on the ridiculous notifications system.

If devs and content providers get behind webOS and HP, AND HP can price this thing in direct competition or under what the ipad sells for, then that's real live competition folks, from a company that controls both hardware and software, someone that doesn't currently exist to compete against apple.

Everyone is missing the big picture. Does everyone think that when iPad2 comes out that iPad1 is suddenly going to disappear? My guess is Apple keeps 1 version of iPad1 around and drops the price significantly (Think $299-399) to undercut all these current products. With the prospects of selling 30m iPads in 2011, don't u think Apple has a little leeway when it comes to pricing their products.

Most individuals don't give a crap about features, price is king.

I think you showed pretty well with your sarcasm on why Apple fanboys are not respected because I know some people here really believe everything you posted in your sarcastic post.

Way to stick it to the strawman! It's people like you who point out all the fanboys (so no one else has to step on them) that deserve all the respect. Thanks for all your hard work.

GREAT job HP!!

If I wasn't holding out for iPad 2, I'd be ready to purchase one of these bad boys for sure. I think iOS and webOS should be the leading mobile OS's, and hopefully they will be as things pan out in the future. Why would you get sloppy Android, when you can get something unique, elegant, and powerful like this for the same price? Apple's gotta step it up with iPad 2.. but obviously they will. Can't wait! ;)

bad timing

ipad 2 will be out by then and crush the touchpad.

Poor people probably would vouch for ipad 1 due to reduced price.

I hope WebOS does great. I agree competition is good. I just want WebOS style notifications for iOS. For the love of God please please please :apple:

This is an exciting time for tablets... the HP TouchPad actually looks quite snappy and feature-rich, RIM's PlayBook has some interesting features and a form factor I really like, there are a number of Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets coming down the pike this year as well I'm sure, and of course... iPad 2. :D This will be the year, almost undoubtedly, that I will make a purchase of a tablet. I love what I've seen of my friends' and colleague's iPads, but I was waiting for v2 because I really want a front-facing camera for video conferencing. I haven't made up my mind about which direction I'll go, but there will be plenty to choose from!

Just learned that TouchPad isn't going to be out until summer.

Tech companies: APPLE ***** on you guys because they release things in a timely matter after announcement, how the **** have you not learned this yet??

HP boardroom - "Guys, we've got a great device here, you know what we should do? Demo it 6 months before we actually release it and let Apple just solidify their lead with their actual shipping product!"

"Genius! Get this man a raise!"

Dumbasses.

i totally heard the dad's voice from that 70's show while reading your post. epic.

Cagey about battery life, release date and price.
Why promise battery live six months out when they don't even have final hardware, much less software yet? Its hard to believe that running about the same hardware with access to about the same battery tech and with complete control of their own OS they won't be able to get comparable usage to everybody else.

As for price, why would they commit to a price now? The marketplace may look very different by the summer. Maybe the Xoom drops a couple hundred after a few months and sells below the iPad on the street? Or maybe Apple keeps the iPad 1.0 around for $399 and everybody needs to complete with that? Or maybe none of it happens, everybody else stays where they are, and their IS room to compete on price underneath...They get to wait and see.

But the underabundance of software more than makes up for those omissions.
The underabundance of software is why they have to announce it 6 months out, just like RIM and the Playbook. With no WebOS software designed for a tablet form factor existing outside HP, they have to get developers interested.

In a month or two they will have a developer WebOS developer fest and send everybody home with emulators. A couple of months after that 'good friends' and new comers that show promise will get beta hardware to test with.

If they didn't make a public announcement they would (a) get fewer developers interested and working on the platform and (b) lose control of the flow of information as developers working with beta software and hardware spilled the beans in anonymous messages to prominent websites and bloggers (e.g. the whole playbook only has 2 hours of battery life meme)

No eco system.... dead end.
They have existing loyal WebOS users, new phones, a tablet, something going on with PCs, and the tightest possible linking with the world's most popular printers. There are no guarantees but that collection gives them a lot of room to play in.

Side Note: HP is talking about WebOS on PCs. Apple has already shipped their Online App Store and shown some of its iOS stuff (e.g. full screen App UI) coming to Lion. It sounds like the start of an interesting industry trend.

*******, not only do they copy the device, they can't even come up with their own keynote fonts and background...

My thoughts too! "Lead, follow, or get out of the way," I guess.

Very interesting to see them copying the keynote style presentation that Apple does.

I am not sure what to say but that is pretty bad fanboyism in that post.

That keynott background and font is fairly common to us. I have seen quite a few keynotts on things that have nothing to do with technology and that type of font on a background like that is just common to us. It is easy on the eyes and eye to read.

Ok seriously??? You guys above are delusional! I love Apple and have been accused of fanboyism but come on!

ACTUALLY, it is a freaking presentation lol! People other than Apple use a soft gradient background in presentations. The one you see actually matches the Palm branding for webOS. I'm sure you never went to their site so you wouldn't know that. And as for the font, ACTUALLY that is a CUSTOM font that Palm had created SPECIFICALLY for webOS and it actually looks really nice in their OS! But you wouldn't know that either!

Any word on battery life?

I love the iPad, but I'd be lying if I said this didn't make me think twice. Too bad it's coming out in the summer.

Ya the summer news is their biggest issue and no word on battery life or prices.

VERY nice looking tablet. IMO a very nice competitor. Lets see if Apple has any software innovations up their sleeves.

The phones might not br as heavy competition , but this tablet is uncluttered compared to Honeycomb similar to the iPad better in some areas, Apple has a lot riding on iPad 2. Of course nothing is clear cut but Palm is at the position to do something they only lack ecosystem.

Yup. They look pretty nice and have some cool features. Competition is good!

I find today very interesting and revealing! I knew that HP after buying up Palm and webOS would be better positioned than anyone else in tech to have a chance at competing with Apple. Computers, phones, mobile devices, printers, software, services, and now the OS. HP has the pieces and scale to do something substantial!

We are seeing the future unfold here! It is not about shipping crap computers or cheap devices anymore and being the top vendor etc. It is about PLATFORMS and ECOSYSTEMS!!! The new CEO of Nokia spoke about this quite well the other day when expressing the trouble they are in.

There is a new barrier to entry in tech and it is immense! It is not just a computer, it is not an OS someone else makes and everyone else uses as well. It is not just having smart phones or a tablet with an OS everyone else uses and tries to modify to make it unique, creating mass platform and device fragmentation in the process. It is about everything together, and how they work together, and having the scale to implement all pieces of the puzzle to work seamlessly together. It is about the strategy and business model behind the curtains that aligns with products and users, not other ulterior motives like taking IP and modifying it enough to disclaim legal ramifications and give it away for free so as to not have any overhead in the platform you use to serve ads and gather data etc. It is not about the press creating a mythical war between a barely-profitable mess of a platform and an immensely successful platform the likes of which tech has never before seen while hypocritically claiming open versus closed to create a war of mind share.

Today was a big blow for Microsoft as well. Make no mistake, HP has every intention on making webOS their platform for all products. They even said they fully intend to take it to computers in every scale! Finally they are a PC vendor who will not be at the mercy of Microsoft and Windows with no way to differentiate themselves. Windows was from the era of infrastructure and will fall behind the curtain of the IT world and backend servers while struggling to create something new like WP7 to address the new consumer era of computing. HP is becoming the Apple of the PC world and the other players who do not understand what I am explaining will slowly fall into greater and greater irrelevance! Good luck Dell lol and all others in that situation.

New players are in the game now, from phone makers, to mobile, to game companies etc. etc. It is not just about a computer company anymore. All those things are computers and we are in the era of convergence, platforms, and ecosystems! The new era of computing! Big changes ahead!

I've been using WebOS on a Palm Pre for just under a year now, and I have to say, it's my solid #2 choice for a mobile OS.. a close second to Apple's iOS.

Android is just clunky, awkward, and cluttered. It's like Windows XP and Linux had a baby.

Technology should make our lives easier, not more complex. It's that minimalist approach that's made Apple so successful since Steve Jobs return to Apple, and it's a industry lesson the folks at Palm finally learned when they scrapped their long running PalmOS, and created WebOS.

In many respects WebOS is as good or better than iOS.. and this is coming from a true blue, dyed in the wool Apple fanboy since the Apple ][.

The release of the original WebOS was a prime example of remarkably poor timing and execution.

If the iPad 2 is released before this new Touchpad, WebOS will get buried again.. and history will repeat itself.

What is so compelling about the webOS tablet exactly? You guys go gaga over some multitasking when in fact iOS' multiask suffices at best. It's cool to see cards and stacks but it seems like the tech demo revolved around the multitasking and the email client.

I see nothing new to the game here. Sure the integration is cool neat little feature but how does it work exactly and how is the battery life? How fast is the browser? Where are the apps that take advantage of the dual core?

You see these are typical fails for these companies because I don't care that much about how the multitask looks or the email app. This is just a show off because in reality I won't be doing three things at once. Even on my desktop I focus on one app at a time with the occasional side track. So all this fancy card stack is just that. WebOS from palm was a flop. This one is vaporware.

No price no specs on battery no actual field usage demo no camera demo the entire show was a tease about something no one will care about once the price drops for the iPad 1 and the unveil of iPad 2.

In fact most of the things shown was a copy from apple. Home button. Size. Screen quality. Sow me something truly new I haven't seen that I will want. Not the same fail webos that was buried and revived by HP. hP makes crap pcs and let's see them mess up webOS as well.

sounds like the deeper pockets was a good thing for palm.

that's why i left the iphone for palm and then android. notifications are just so much superior on android and webos, it's just silly.

This will change in IOS 5.0 this summer. Apple knows its notifications suck but they do work. They just look ugly.

OMG they totally copied

1) The bezel? Come on, everyone knows apple invented that. Figure out another way to hold it you copy cats!
2) The shape. Where's my triangular pad? Huh?
3) The row of apps at the bottom. Come on man, be original. You'd think an app launcher was a common idea or something.
4) Windows that you can swipe through. Are you serious?!
5) OS in the name. This goes without saying really.

I can't wait until Apple sues their pants off.

+ infinity.

Oh man, you hit the nail on the head. I don't know how they look at themselves in the mirror.

yeah, the 2nd car manufacturer copied the first too. had 4 wheels, an engine, and everything.

2nd computer manufacturer copied the first. had a keyboard, monitor, and CPU. crazy

Plus there are no apps...there are over 50K Ipad specific apps....nobody can come close to this...

Maybe the Ipad 2 will have a quad core Arm Cortex A9 processor like in the Sony NGX (PSP2)
