Folks, this is a MBA/MBP competitor, not a MacBook competitor. Look at the total footprint rather than the thickness. This is a preview of the kind of things we will see in the next line of MacBook Pros and/or Airs (if they don't kill that line which I think they will).

That said, while I appreciate the focus on quality rather than price, this is one of the ugliest laptops I've seen in a long time!

Thought it looked ok in the pictures but watching the video, hmm, not so much. Somehow this came to mind...

Ha! Never seen that before. I'd like to think that's exactly how they did it at Apple.

If that's what it's like I want a job there. "Johnny, make a f'kin phone I can hold without it siding out of my hands like an oiled up penguin from a whales mouth or I will slap you around the head with a mouldy kipper until it's (Product) Red".

Actually think it looks really nice.

But retina aka HiDPI screen is a minimal requirement these days for me. And I favour lightness over thinness. They managed to make it thinner but heavier than the macbook. Wrong way around!

(Before even mentioning the OS... But as long as Linux will run on it or it's hackintoshable... ;-) )

That strip of copper on the top looks hideous.

I am a sucker for copper. If apple started making copper-look kit I'd be lost.

Those moaning about ports clearly miss the point of the MacBook with its single USB-C port. The vision is for a wireless future, Apple aren't going to go back on that goal. It would be like them adding a CD/DVD drive to the original MacBook Air just because consumers were tied to legacy technology that Apple could see disappearing in a few years.

The fact that it has Core i-series chips instead of Core-M makes this a MacBook Air competitor, not a MacBook competitor. By that fact the Air wins. Sure, it might not have the better display, but it beats it in battery life, having the Force Touch trackpad and sheer amounts of usable ports.

Oh, and carbon fibre may sound fancy, but it bends just as bad as cheap, flimsy plastic. Sounds the same, too.
But thats the whole point of the MacBook---to be thin? You wouldn't compare the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro because of their processor would you?

I think this is a direct MacBook competitor, but also happens to be good enough to be able to compete with the Air as well, even if not so favourably.

Why so many haters?
At least HP came up with a new design instead of what so many others do nowadays. Just try to re-create the Apple aluminium look with glossy black screen frame and black keyboards. As if a laptop irequired look that way.
My thoughts exactly

To me - not very pretty but thin. I do not like how they mounted the screen to the chassis (the hinge). Also the colours in the pictures are less then great. But maybe other colours are available.

That hinge is really hard to look at. I prefer the MacBook pro's hinge design over this any day. The color is okay but I think they took it too far with the way they incorporated the copper. Good idea just not such a great execution. The specs sound really nice but I'm doubtful that it'll live up to its battery claims.

Gorgeous computer, I can see myself getting one. I think HP stepped up to the came and surpassed apple on the design of this.

I do wonder about the performance and/or heat but from a design perspective, HP hit it out of the park.

Coming from someone who owns a 12 Inch Macbook (which I love) this is a very appealing product. Whilst it may not look quite as sleek as the rMB it has 3 ports and an Edge-to-edge display. In 2016, i still can't believe the bezels on Apple laptops. I'm hoping the second generation can improve by reducing the bezels (unlikely) and include Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Great product HP!

Update: I've just seen a picture of the display; I would hardly consider it Edge-to-edge :/

Meanwhile, my MacBook Pro from 2012 is slowing down to a crawl, ridden with bugs and I wish to hurl it through a window. So frustrating.

Then get a MacBook 13' retina, OR MacBook 2015. That's a fairer comparison, and OS X is still a much more polished product than Windows 10.

First thing that came to my mind is that HP based this design on Dell Adamo...

I love the copper / black color scheme. Wish it came with the iPhone. I think it looks great, except for the hinge. Wouldn't want one, but it looks great.

I personally don't care for this laptop's looks or thinness - especially if it means reducing the battery/autonomy for the sake of a paper-thin enclosure yet again.

Where Apple should feel pressure however is how HP throws Core i5/7 U chips in there instead of lackluster Core M, a fair array of ports rather than a single port + having to use dongles, and let's not forget TB3 which is still MIA on Apple products.

Doesn't really count if it's a few millimeters thinner but nearly a half-pound heavier. Looks like some further "innovation" is needed.

I wonder if the trackpad is good; in Windows laptops that's always the worst hardware feature in my opinion. The trackpad on Apple laptops is superb...most windows trackpads suck really bad in comparison.
