NOOOOOOOOOOO! HP is a very bad company in my book. I am sad to see this happen. I was really hoping that Palm would be bought by HTC...it was a much better fit. Palm is/was a pioneer company and deserves better.

Huh, HP with their own OS? Weird. Well this should certainly bring some life into their super stale iPAQ brand.

Very interesting. Does this mean the Pre lives on? Or is it killed?

Not my first guess for a Palm buyer, but it could work out well. A legitimate competitor for the iPad would be nice to see.

Remember the early 00's when Palm and HP ruled the PDA market. HP had the iPaq even before the iPod.

What a couple of has-beens. My gut feeling is that nothing of consequence will ever come of this. RIP Palm :(

How could you forget the TREO?!

"struggling to reinvent itself as a smartphone company after being a major player in the PDA market"?!

Are you kidding? The TREO dominated the smartphone market for longer than the iPhone has.

Personally, when HP and Compaq merged (or however you call it), it kinda ruined both of them. The quality of their products and services together seemed to be lesser than the sum of the parts.

I trudged through their line of iPAQs and Jornadas, only to be shafted with OS updates that never came or still had issues. Will adding Palm complete an unholy trinity?

Should they be called Hewlett Palmpaq now?

HP has always been my favorite PC maker - amazing customer service. Hoping HP does something amazing with webOS.

OMG! Do you have a phone number for HP that you use? My experience with HP service/support has been nightmarish. Hours and hours on the phone with no one knowing anything. Never talking to the same person twice. I'd never buy a thing from them ever again.

While this is very interesting, why didn't Apple purchase them if they would be sold for only 1.2B? Apple has what, 40B in reserves, that wouldn't have even dented it, and they'd have one of the most interesting (and seen as competitive to the iPhone at launch) OSes ever. Let alone all the patents, especially multi-touch.

Hmm... is HP really going to go against M$ & Win Mobile phone 7? That won't please the other Steve much at all. Or is HP just buying patents & engineerers? Interesting. Grab some popcorn.

HTC is really in bed with Google now. That is evident from the Apple lawsuit. If they would have started selling phones with Web OS, it might have hurt their relationship with Google. Android is really picking up steam right now, while Web OS is falling by the wayside. Makes more sense for HTC to stick with the free Android OS that they don't really have to maintain much. HP, on the other hand, really isn't much of a player anymore with regard to smart phones so they seem to be looking to expand back into that category.

So will they be smart enough to make WebOS devices that compete with the iPod Touch and the iPad?

Or are they just gonna f-around with cell phones like all the Android makers are doing?

Everyone is focused on Smart Phones and Laptops. It's like they don't even see the iPod/iPad ecosystem. HP is in the best position of ANYONE to challenge Apple right now...let's see if they do anything about it.

Interesting move by Palm, I'd like to see the logic behind such a move. Do they plan to somehow merge Palm with their Tablet initiative?

Palm put themselves up for sale 2 weeks ago. If they didn't, they would have been out of cash before the end of the year.

Wish I had bought some stock... :-/

I had been following PALM's stock the last few months, and it was hard finding the right time to jump in. FWIW, $4.63 close today. The 1.2B probably amounts to $5.70 per share which amounts to about a 19% increase in profit assuming you bought it at $4.63. Keep in mind throughout the day today, the stock kept going down

As for the news, I think this is good for HP, but I am not fond of HP products. It is however nice to have another competitor int he market.

Hurd buys a turd?

i'm sure you could run webOS on a tablet. webOS is quite good IMHO.

this could become a competitor to the ipad easily. webcam, multitasking, lower price, stylus, mini keyboard, tethering, usb, sd slot.

competition is good.

Steve holds grudges, and a lot of Apple people went to Palm to follow Jon Rubenstein. Though it would have been funny for him to fire them all, while keeping all the work that they labored over the past few years. There are a few cool tricks that Web OS does that would be nice on the iPhone, but $1.2B cool? Not so sure. The reason Apple has so much money is because they are smart with it. Heck, that's the reason that most rich people are rich. They know what they're doing, and most likely they've got something better in the pipeline that we can't even imagine for the future of the iOS.

wow..
If they use what little they still have and do shake up the new emerging market (tablet/smart phone) that would be good for the consumer, but lets be honest both were not at the top of their game, as they were a few years ago.

WebOS is a fantastic mobile OS, I just think Palm screwed up the execution of it and ran out of cash. Getting HP's bank account behind WebOS will do wonders for it.

They really did. That ad campaign was one of the worst I've ever seen.
